According to a noted analyst, Sony could launch its more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, along with a slimmed-down PS4 before or during the Tokyo Game Show in September.

Macquarie Securities analyst Damian Thong shared that information with The Wall Street Journal and writer Takashi Mochizuki today. Sony declined to comment to WSJ on the new systems and when they might launch.

This comes not long after another report claimed Sony would release Neo before the end of the year. Sony has already confirmed the existence of Neo, which is only a codename, but this is the fist time we're hearing about a revision for the existing PS4.

If history is any indication, Sony will launch a smaller PS4 eventually. The first slimmed-down PlayStation 3 model launched in September 2009, almost three years after the original version came out in November 2006.

For its part, Microsoft will release the first Xbox One revision, the 40-percent smaller Xbox One S, starting in August this year. Microsoft's Project Scorpio, which it calls the "most powerful console ever made," is scheduled to arrive in holiday 2017.

@playstationzone: They would be silly to do that seeing as MS have said they are open to it !! If no excusives why buy it ? .. Well I am buying it for the performance as I want DEVs to push the Games if that means leaving older systems behind then so be it !!

I'm good with my current PS4, but I would like to see an upgraded controller for the system. I know it would be obviously following behind Microsoft after they made an upgraded controller, but honestly after holding the Xbox Elite controller, my PS4 controller felt like a cheap hunk of plastic, and that's not even counting the eroding rubber joysticks and squeaking trigger buttons my PS4 controller currently suffers from

@Scorch_22: id like a to use the ds3 on ps4 they should do elite versions of the ds3 and 4 in different sizes too

Avatar image for Scorch_22

@alaannn: I could see that. Aside from being the world's largest start button (great button for panic pausing) the actual touch pad itself is barely used. It would be interesting to see if Sony could pull off bringing back the DS3

As someone who is interested in upgrading his consoles, I'm wondering if I should hold off on the Playstation 'Neo' with the obvious concern that Sony will inevitably release a proper competitor to the Scorpio sometime next year.

Avatar image for alaannn

@uncha1n3d: the neo is 5.5 terafops and scorpio is 6 havent checked the rest of the specs but it seems neo is around the power of scorpio

Avatar image for jako998

@alaannn: where did you get that its 5.5 teraflops from? its been reported for months that its 4.14 wtf??

Avatar image for alaannn

@jako998: from the news reports ive seen they have 2 versions and they havent decided which one they will be using one is 5.5 and the other is somewhere between 4 and 5 terraflops the 5.5 version costs 100 dollars more and will be 500 dollars the 4 terraflop version is 400 dollars they havent decided which one they will go with but considering scorpio power at 6 terraflops they might go with the more powerful version here a reference,its an articule where they mention 5.5 for ps4 but ive seen 5.5 in alot of reports on ps4 neo (http://www.ibtimes.com.au/ps4-neo-reportedly-launching-2016-two-models-hinted-new-trademarked-technology-better-graphics)

@jako998: Some minor gaming site named gamepur put out a story to gain some attention. So far people on GAF are laughing at it. I've heard 4.14 and 4.19 so far.

Digital Foundry did say that Sony could possibly overclock one or more parts on the Neo, but they would still face a deficit of 100gbps memory bandwidth.

@uncha1n3d: ps5 will be the scorpio competitor. i expect them to launch it in the fall of 2018 (one year after the scorpio launches).

Avatar image for Marky360

@Xristophoros:

That would kinda suck though seeing as how the PlayStation Neo just launched this year you'd have to ask what's the point of the Neo then of they are just going to make the PS5 2 years later.

Avatar image for da_raging_asian

@Marky360: Sony could actually win the competition with the Neo if they could get the price right. They don't need to bring out a more powerful version to compete the Scorpio.

@uncha1n3d:

I don't think so I mean if they did that then what is the point of the Neo. I just feel like the Neo is competitor to the Scorpio.

Avatar image for iandizion713

@uncha1n3d: To be honest, i dont think them releasing one right after Neo would be wise. But yeah, im not sure, maybe they will release one to compete with Scorpio.

Avatar image for uncha1n3d

@iandizion713: Yea I cant see them doing that either. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled development on the Neo entirely to put comparable specs to the Scorpio and release it sometime next year. I could still see them releasing the slim model this year, though

Avatar image for NeoBillbine

@uncha1n3d: Probably this. The Scorpio will probably be about the speed of a GTX 970, so the Neo will probably be a fair bit slower.

@bdrtfm: Ps4 (or xbox one) dont need to be replaced at all.I for one will buy ps 4 neo and x one s simply because I was unable to buy ps4 and x 1 until now. Cant wait for xone s and ps 4 neo *-*

It's interesting how Sony and MS are completely opposite in their messaging of their next systems. MS couldn't shut up about it and people panned them for announcing Scorpio at the same time as their Slim model yet Sony seems content with rolling out Neo with hardly a whisper!

Avatar image for Marky360

@dryvlyne:

I don't see why ppl would pann Microsoft for announcing Scorpio and the XB1 S at the same time I think it would have been a dirty move for them to announce and sell the Xbox One S this year and then announce and sell the Scorpio next year. I applaud Microsoft for being upfront and frank with it's consumer. After having an idea of how both systems will work I've decided to shoot for the Xbox One S as my console of choice. Had they not announced the Scorpio even though it was rumored I wouldn't have felt comfortable with buying the XB1 S with not knowing what the Scorpio was or how it would work.

Avatar image for dryvlyne

@Marky360: Oh no, I agree with you 100% as a consumer. A lot of the gaming media though has criticized MS for the announcement. I can see how from a typical corporate point of view it doesn't make sense what they did, but I definitely applaud them for having the balls to do so knowing full well it might mean lower sales for the Slim model.

@jshah500: Internal driva ain't cheap, mine was half the price of my PS4.

Also, I was agreeing with you, a new console, correction, upgraded console ain't needed, its a cheap move from Sony.

@mlauber: I'm from Brazil, I found a sale and paid 1600 Brazilian Real(around 700-800$ US dollar at time), six months later, thanks to our incompetent president, I found a 1 TB hard drive for 800 Brazilian Real (around 200 US dollar at time).

Why sony and microsoft are focusing on 4K il never know. Resolution doesnt mean jack unless you have a smooth framerate with no lag backing it up. They should just wait until next gen to introduce 4K to the average consumer.

Avatar image for iandizion713

@jonnybrownieboy: Plus 4K refresh rates on TV are still in the early stages. Will be awhile before we move past 4K with 60htz i think.

Avatar image for fig56

@jonnybrownieboy: So true. That's the reason I'm not upgrading to anything new. 4K and HDR doesn't mean a thing to me. Current graphics and resolution is fine with me as long as the games and gameplay stay good, that's all I need. How much more real can a tree or a body of water look?

Avatar image for ziltoid

@jonnybrownieboy: It's funny how the media and the companies keep throwing the 4K word around, like it's some sort of magical graphical quality. I see it just like you, resolution is just one aspect of a game's graphics.

Hmm i don't know, after the messy PS3 launch Sony has been playing very safe ever since.

They are on the lead, they will problably hold on a little longer, i don't know about the PS4 slim but i find hard to believe they intend to release the Neo model this year. I see them holding a little longer, cutting down the PS4 price and annoucing the Neo within an affordable price tag.

Too bad these "analysts" don't meet amongst themselves to avoid all the contradictory analyzing they keep putting out there. The last analyst that went on record said the NEO would be out sometime in 2017. Unless "analyst" is simply the P.C. term for "fortune teller".
