According to a noted analyst, Sony could launch its more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, along with a slimmed-down PS4 before or during the Tokyo Game Show in September.

Macquarie Securities analyst Damian Thong shared that information with The Wall Street Journal and writer Takashi Mochizuki today. Sony declined to comment to WSJ on the new systems and when they might launch.

This comes not long after another report claimed Sony would release Neo before the end of the year. Sony has already confirmed the existence of Neo, which is only a codename, but this is the fist time we're hearing about a revision for the existing PS4.

If history is any indication, Sony will launch a smaller PS4 eventually. The first slimmed-down PlayStation 3 model launched in September 2009, almost three years after the original version came out in November 2006.

For its part, Microsoft will release the first Xbox One revision, the 40-percent smaller Xbox One S, starting in August this year. Microsoft's Project Scorpio, which it calls the "most powerful console ever made," is scheduled to arrive in holiday 2017.

Really? The most powerful console ever made is usually whatever is next. Anyone can say this when things evolve. As soon as the new cell phone comes out, TV, even breath mints!!! They are the most powerful and best ever made! I don't doubt that it will be the most powerful...although the most powerful console right now is the PS4. Then the Neo or whatever will be the most powerful ever made. Project Scorpio is still in R&D. When it releases, it will most likely be the most powerful console ever made. It isn't the most powerful yet because we can't get our hands on it. So for now, It is the most powerful console "in Development". Save that claim for 2017.

Seriously, another rumor... So is this Rumorspot now?

Launching in September, I don't think its impossible, but its it would be the dumbest thing Sony could do, people need time to plan to buy a new console, several months are needed for this, if they launch during TGS they're basically killing themselves since no one will be able to buy anything, the best date to launch is close to the end of the first half of the year with a moderate library planned for the year, or, during the end of the year, maybe on Black Friday, maybe even after but before the holyday, a time were everyone has money, hardly anyone has money during the time between July to November.

@Sohereiam: Showing the Xbox One S was a great idea. The dumbest idea? Announcing the more powerful Scorpio coming out next year. This will most likely curb sales of the S model because people will wait a year. Already have an Xbox One? I'd wait for the Scorpio. Buying one for the HDD upgrade? Buy an external HDD for 50 bucks.

@nervedamaged: Not really, I've had an XBone since day one and will be replacing it with the S ... and I will also get the Scorpio when it comes out !!

@nervedamaged: I'm not the only one that's happy to sell my current Xbox one for the slim because of the cheap 4k bluray player.

Avatar image for Sohereiam

@nervedamaged: Agree with you that, when they announced the Xbone S I thought "Awesome!", but when they announced the Scorpion I was "WHAT?! THEN WHY THE HELL THEY ANNOUCED THE XBONE S?!".

One thing, the PS4 can't record games on a external drive, only saves, I tried and couldn't, saw lots of people complaining the same, you can on Xbone, not on PS4.

But what I saying in the comment above is about Sony awful business administration, although MS seems to be suffering the same.

@Sohereiam: Scorpio is still 18 months away, so is not like is coming out in a month or two.

Avatar image for nervedamaged

@Sohereiam: I actually meant the 50 bucks for the Xbox one, not the ps4. Wish the PS4 could use those. I upgraded to a 2tb hdd on ps4, and it isn't cheap for that size internal HDD. Much cheaper for the external, and so much more storage!

I dont think sony will make a big deal out of the neo. They will launch simply as a ps4k. People will have the option depending on budget. They wont claim to be making the most powerful console ever. It will simply be the ps4k.

Now to bash ms a little. Sorry.

Slim version 40% smaller, still will be bigger then the ps4.

Most powerful console ever made. Its not made yet guys. Due at the end of 2017+ delays. So xmas 2020 microsoft tring to promote the scorpio before sony with neo. We all know this is just mircosoft coping sony.

Hmmm. I read this back and sounds a little fanboy ish. O well

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@loudroom: Since Microsoft already said they considered releasing Scorpio THIS year, there is not going to be that 3 year delay you are predicting. And you do sound rather fanboyish and foolish with those statements grounded in no facts.

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico
LTJohnnyRico

@loudroom: I have both a PS4 and an XBone and I will be getting the Neo and Scorpio and 2020 is a daft thing to say MS are confident that next year the Scorpio will come out, they could probably have released it sooner but want the S to sell for a bit !!

Avatar image for iammcgruber
IAmMcGruber

@loudroom: They won't claim it the most powerful console ever because theres no point with the Scropio specs being revealed. I will be picking up a Neo and Scorpio, but they should make a big deal out of the Neo if I was them cause I'd certainly want people to buy it. As far as the Xbox S being still bigger than the Ps4...who cares? if it IS still bigger then we are talking about like a half an inch most likely. I think people could care less.

Avatar image for iammcgruber

@jshah500: I would take this with a grain of salt...this is NOT from Sony, its from some analyst..AKA someone who who makes claims purely on specualtion. If I were to play "analyst" my claim would be analysts are right about 30% of the time especially in the gaming industry. (You should take my analysis with a grain of salt)

@iammcgruber: They could be one in the same. Slim PS4 is the Neo.

HDR and 4K should been implemented since both consoles launch not as a selling point, i understand that micro situatión with current xbox1 was needed due the poor rock edge design. In case of sony a ps4 slim seems redundant. Know i think people should be aware of the difference between both companies. Microsoft scorpio is a next gen console for sony the leap to Neo its a middle step to acknowledge a 6-7 years current gen a serious leap for them will be branded ps5 which i expect to be release 2019

@Mizarzeug: I think 2020 for PS5, but the sooner the better.

I want that sexy controller in the pic. Love that coloring. On a related note, when does the design-your-own X1 controller program go live? I'm not big on custom system designs, other than subdued variants on the basic design, but more stylized custom controller colors can be fun

Great. No more downgrading games I suppose (Except for Ubisoft who'll downgrade anyways). And also native 1080p / 60fps. Console owners will be delighted and will have an enhanced gaming experience.

Get real ppl Ps4 neo is only upgrade what will have same games as ps4 since sony said no exclisive games for Ps4 neo . Aslo along be PS4 slim so real MS and Sony copying each other.

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico

@playstationzone: Not really coping eachother its a natural progression .. to release smaller units over time, kinda like they way they do the opposite with Mobiles and we get bigger/smaller units .. The slim models are cool but its the Neo and Scorpio that I am most interest in ... I will be getting both of those and really hope MS and Sony push them to deliver some really awesome experiences!! Also hope they link XBL and PS+ so my friends on both systems can play together .. Gamers Unite !!

To be honest, I'm not sure why anyone would buy a PlayStation Neo with the current rumors about it: All games must run on both PS4 and Neo; All games on Neo must run at 60fps; and PlayStation Neo is 35%+ weaker than Xbox Scorpio. This basically means that the difference in PS4 games and Neo games will be greatly reduced by that 60fps requirement because a lot of power is being put at making them run at those frames per second. Also, no such requirement has been announced for the Scorpio meaning we could see games that run at 30fps, thus being graphics intensive. On top of that, there has been mixed communication about all games on Scorpio being playable on the original Xboxes(I've heard Phil say they will, and another person in an interview at E3 say its not a requirement), and if not would mean games could be heavily optimized for the Scorpio making them look that much better than Neo games.

Avatar image for marano94
Marano94

@yencanwasu: Sony said games need to run at 1080p on neo as a minimum requirement, they never said that about 60 fps, you'll see plenty of 30 fps games on neo absolutely.

Avatar image for xwinson

@yencanwasu: Will depend on the price I guess, with those Scorpio specs it's very likely it'll be more expensive than Neo - it may be at a premium price that only the hardcore gamers may buy (might as well consider PC gaming). If they're roughly the same price then yup, definitely get the Scorpio over the Neo.

Avatar image for scooby_dooo

@yencanwasu: I plan on buying a Neo, NX and Scorpio. That's the way to do it! :)

Avatar image for playstationzone

@yencanwasu: im not buying ps4 neo since be no exclisive games for Ps4 neo because only upgrade PS4 .

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico
LTJohnnyRico

@playstationzone: I think that will change over time as and when Devs start pushing the systems it may be that Games will no longer run on the old systems or they run badly or are downgraded .. Either way the Neo and Scorpio look to be the future of consoles (For the next 3 years at least)!!

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

Sony should throw in 4K Blu-ray and HDR in the slim and match the X1S for price. Don't underestimate the market for a cheap 4K Blu-ray player and let MS sneak in extra sales that way.

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico

@suicidesn0wman: Indeed !! I think a lot of people are underestimating the value of that 4K player !!

They should just release both a Neo slimmed down in one instead of 2 like Microsoft. This just complicates the deal but I'm interested how all this will go

It's going to be kinda of awkward with Sony releasing both the Slim PS4 and the Neo at the same time I like Microsoft's approach of the more staggered release it just feels like it makes more sense this way unless the Slim is both significantly cheaper and Slimmer then the Neo there really won't be a point in buying it. With the Xbox One S I want it because the Original Xbox One design is huge and that power brick is a pain. When it comes to the PS4 it's really small enough and I have no issues with it although I guess this is a good opportunity to add HDR support like Microsoft is doing for the Xbox One.

Avatar image for Xristophoros
Xristophoros

@Marky360: maybe the slim ps4 is the neo? kill two birds with one stone.... perhaps they have plans to phase out the original ps4 model a year or two after neo releases?

Avatar image for Marky360

@Xristophoros:

Now that would definitely an interesting idea for sure. If it is indeed possible I really think Sony should go this route.
