More Powerful PS4 Might be in the Works - Report

The "PS4.5" could be able to run games at 4K resolution.

Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4, if a report from Kotaku is correct. The report says the upgraded PS4 would come with increased graphical capabilities to run games at 4K resolution.

Developer sources told Kotaku about the improved PS4. It's not currently known if current owners will be able to upgrade their hardware or if this will be a brand new system altogether. Whatever the case is, Sony has apparently started talking to developers about it.

According to Kotaku, the "PS4.5" will come with an upgraded GPU that will support games running at 4K resolution and enhance games for PlayStation VR. Kotaku notes that "PS4.5" might not be its official name--it could be a nickname used by its developer sources.

Kotaku claims that it was able to confirm the news with at least four separate sources. However, their sources are unsure of when it will come to market and how much it will cost.

We will keep you updated as more information of this supposedly upgraded PS4 becomes available.

This isn't the first time we've heard about a possible PS4 upgrade. Sony executive Masayasu Ito said the company might consider a "high-power" PS4. On the other side, Xbox head Phil Spencer said we might see an Xbox One hardware upgrade.

People going mad at the idea of a newer more powerful Playstation wow, haven't Apple been doing the same thing for years with the Iphone. Each year newer models with little upgrades in Specs get released for around $700, but people dont blast them. A newer model will allow current ps4 to drop in price, giving older gen gamers a chance to finally join the next gen party.

Hell if you dont want it dont buy it, all games will still work either way so everyone is happy :-)

Bad move Sony. Just another way to piss people off. Doing well with that this console generation...

A new console version on the heals of the VR headset release date.? Makes me wonder just how the current systems will handle the new tech...

@jak3099: Too late. But no, it won't run Crysis at 4k.

I call BS. Sony's always been the type of company to ride the coattails of their own success. And given their financial woes, I don't see that changing now.

If the PS4K could play games, not just movies in 4K, then I think we should put all PC gamers that still think consoles can't even do 1080p @ 60fps on suicide watch.

Avatar image for ILSATS

@ButDuuude: If they want to make the PS4 cost about 2k$, then yes, it will be able to play games at 4k.

I mean this happens all the time with consoles and their upgrades, but there was no way I was waiting 3 years to get a PS4 because I was scared an upgrade may happen

Man I'm glad I haven't bought a PS4 yet. I'll be watching for latest news about this.

I would love to have at least a decent gaming console out there. It's just a pain that so many great games don't make it to the PC and especially a JRPG fan like me has to deal with the PS4. I'd buy a stronger PS4 instantly, especially if it also allows a 3.5'' HD and allows for 4TB+

@ArchoNils2: Also I like how everyone tries to have their "New 3DS" even though I thought the "New 3DS" didn't do that good

Avatar image for ILSATS

@ArchoNils2: 3DS's collection of exclusive games is more superior than both PS4 & XONE combined in quality and quantity.

@ILSATS: You do know I am writing about the NEW 3DS which doesn't have any interessting game besides Xenoblades Chronicles and a little bit more speed. Personally I love it, the orginial 3DS is painfully slow, but it still did horrible

This would be a bad move by Sony, as it would be splitting its current gen fanbase. If all it does is increase resolution. It wouldn't be a big deal.

Let's wait and see.

I would buy it on day 1. And it would give me a reason to finally get a 4k tv.

This is a really dumb idea and is just going to bring confusion to the market. They should wait for the PS5 to add these features, and focus on making games the best they can with the technology already available.

@InYourMouf: yes, it is .... the worst solution finded

Avatar image for RCT4ShouldExist
RCT4ShouldExist

@InYourMouf: That would be ideal, but the ever widening gap of available system resources compared to PCs poses a serious problem for them. How can they justify their cutting edge games running in 1080p at 30hz when a moderately powerful PC is running many of the same games at 4K 60hz. At some point, they're selling people an inferior product at a higher price.

Avatar image for InYourMouf
InYourMouf

@RCT4ShouldExist: It's not going to matter to console gamers; the majority of them don't want to game on PC, no matter how much more powerful it is. They want the exclusives, the trophies/gamerscore, the ability to rent and sell, and they don't want to bother with PC hardware--especially with all the many compatibility issues. Most of them don't know what they're missing, frankly, and are more than happy with the power they're getting out of their consoles. This is coming from a PC gamer. Hell, most people don't even have monitors or TVs capable of 4K output. So yeah, 4K can wait for the next console generation.

Not really a big drama having a more powerful PS4 or Xbox One .. If you want the newer "beefier" System just trade up .. Simples !!

Avatar image for ILSATS
ILSATS

@ltjohnnyrico: It's a big drama, especially when most console gamers said they liked consoles because they didn't have to upgrade their systems.

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico
LTJohnnyRico

@ILSATS: We still don't have to upgrade our systems .. we simply have the choice .. do we want the more powerful system or not ? .. Depending on spec I will probably get the new system.

Avatar image for ILSATS
ILSATS

@ltjohnnyrico: Yes. That is also true for PC. Yet most console players don't see this.

And btw, it's a big drama when people have to choose to upgrade or not. Maybe not for you, but for many others, especially those who don't have a lot of money.

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico

@ILSATS: It really isnt a big drama .. an earthquake .. is a big drama .. deciding wether to upgrade a gaming system or not .. really isnt a drama .. some will some wont .. simple

Avatar image for ILSATS

@ltjohnnyrico: It's a big drama. Just as so many console players used to argue that consoles didn't need any upgrade.

Not a drama for you ? Good. Drama for others.

I don't know man. Granted, Kotaku is not the most consistent or trust worthy source of information, perhaps the total opposite; but still, they've been right before.

MS have gone out and said it outright with Spencer, so it's only natural Sony had something in the works as well. I don't know if it will materialize; there's always the chance of a huge backlash if they announce it or even if they don't, just by surveying the comments in these rumor articles, that would make them change their plans. But i'm positive the idea exists and moves have been made, at least at some level, in order to check how and if they can push this forward.

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@stelios: Definitely agree that they thought about it, but I doubt they will move on with it. Leaving people that bought a console just recently with an outdated console is just bad for business. Guess we'll see...

60fps, no need for 4k

Avatar image for Evenios
Evenios

@ALLIAMOS: you kidding me? 4k is way better then games running in 60ps. the whole "games must be at 60 fps is just " hype. as long as a game runs solid i dont care if it doesnt reach 60 fps considering many movies are at 24 frames per second!

Avatar image for RCT4ShouldExist
RCT4ShouldExist

@Evenios: Lol movies don't render clear frames the way games do. They're burred images running at low frame rates but our eyes can't tell the difference. A game running at 24hz would be unplayable by any serious gamers definition. 60 fps is a more necessary improvement than 4K. Higher fps improves gameplay, reduce motion blur and input lag, where as 4K adds an unprecedented level of pure immersion.

Its an excuse to sell hardware unnecessarily. They should work on games at this point cause for better or for worse they already have a Ps4 out. Making a 4.5 is just going to divide the market for no reason. It reminds me of Sega and 32x. Its not a good idea.

It's a PR stunt by MS and Kotaku to slow down PS4 sales. Those weasels!!!! Not happening peeps! Muhahahaha.

Just like MS trying to stop/slow sales with the invitation to crossplay..

I think it would be a great idea, I would love to have an upgraded system that can run 4K. It would probably be a good idea to make it as an add on attachment instead of a new console all together. That way people with the console can buy it and upgrade their current console without having to buy a completely new console.

Avatar image for RCT4ShouldExist

@GH05T-666: That would be totally impossible. This is why people buy PCs. Just saying.

@tokutora44: I think you're wrong. They already dealt with the psvr issues by shipping it with the processing hardware that it needs. Seems like a separate issue to support 4k

Avatar image for tokutora44

@jakesnakeel:

Im sorry, there are many threads. What am I wrong about the PSVR?

I think my point is was, Sony would never start considering upgrading GPU at this stage on it life span because of 4k.

Its main competitor is the XBOX One, in ps4 has the lead in units sales. The main reason for a GPU upgrade is to compete in the Virtual Reality arena and not really for 4k displays. But why Sony would suggest to sport a GPU that can handle 4k? Because in gen 2 of VR which may come in about 2-3 years time, 4k or even 8k will be pushed.

To be relevant on VR they will need the horsepower to render each eye so in this case 2k for each eye at 60hz ,90hz, and 120hz.

Avatar image for lostn
lostn

I'm going to call BS on this. To render in 4K requires a VERY beefy GPU and CPU. Most $1500 gaming PC's can't do it, at least not at an acceptable framerate.

So to offer a new $350 or $400 console that can render in 4K? Unlikely. The market for 4K is also very small, because not many have 4K TVs.

So unless this thing is sold side by side for more expensive than the 1080p console, Sony will be taking a loss selling this at $350 for no real gain to most consumers.

Avatar image for RCT4ShouldExist
RCT4ShouldExist

@lostn: 1500$ and you're gaming at 4K in 60 fps at high settings. Even this r9 390x devil lets me run slightly less taxing games at 4K and most look incredible.

Avatar image for lostn
lostn

@RCT4ShouldExist: What games are you running? Did you try anything modern like MGS5, AC Syndicate, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Arkham Knight or Witcher 3?

And is 'high' the maximum settings?

Avatar image for RCT4ShouldExist
RCT4ShouldExist

@lostn: No, high is usually about a solid notch down from max, maybe more. Most of those games will not run well. AC is pointless even at its lowest settings in 4k. MGS5 runs very well however. Probably because it was optimized to run at 60 fps on current gen consoles, unlike the others. For $1500 you can build a computer with a 980 ti that will perform much better. Definitely not maxed out in everything. WQHD at 144hz seems to be the optimal solution at this point. Also, Nvidia will be releasing a new series soon, so hopefully the power of the 980 ti will come at a lower price point.
