More on Namco's R4
Ridge Racer 4 idles at the starting line, ready to take the title of best racing game of '98 from Gran Turismo.
TOKYO - As we reported yesterday, Namco has officially announced that it will release a new Ridge Racer game this December in Japan called R4: Ridge Racer Type 4.
According to the company's web site, the game plays more like the first two games in the Racer series, Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution, than Rage Racer. Additionally it will feature beautiful light and shadow effects, presumably detailed backgrounds and lots of game modes.
Namco says that 300 cars will be selectable (although how many of these will be palette swaps is unknown), with eight tracks - a welcome change from previous Ridge Racers. It has also revealed that it will feature a special Grand Prix Mode.
One can assume that the development team now working on the game is striving to make it look and play better than Gran Turismo, the game many believe is the best racer on the PlayStation.
Currently the game has a loosely set December release, but we believe that if R4 follows the release date pattern of the last three games in the series, it will be released December 3.
