More Crash Games Could Happen, Activision Teases

"We are seeing some real passion for it, so that could lead to other things."

The Crash series is back in the spotlight with the release of the N. Sane Trilogy for PlayStation 4. The remaster package comes with updated versions of the first three games. But could Activision make a brand-new entry in the series someday? That could happen, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has teased.

Speaking to GI.biz, Hirshberg said Activision is "experimenting" with Crash right now. He is not sure as of yet if there is mass appeal for Crash or if the interest in the N. Sane Trilogy only comes from a smaller market of dedicated fans.

Now Playing: Original Crash Bandicoot Levels - N. Sane Trilogy Gameplay

"We know there's a vocal fanbase that wanted that to come back. But you never know if that is emblematic of a larger audience or just this niche, nostalgia-based community," he said. "So far, we are seeing some real passion for it, so that could lead to other things."

Hirshberg added: "Of course, we are always trying to find the next big thing. But our first priority is to make sure we are servicing the communities that we are already lucky enough to have."

GameSpot's N. San Trilogy review scored it a 6/10. "It's easy to imagine how a dyed-in-the-wool Crash fan will fall in love all over again via the N. Sane Trilogy," reviewer Peter Brown said. "But if you're experiencing Crash for the first time--or the first time in a while--it might pain you to realize that Crash's original adventures aren't as inventive or surprising as they were 20 years ago."

The N. Sane Trilogy is off to a hot start sales-wise, as least in the UK, it seems. The game launched to the No. 1 spot in the UK for its first week.

@PredatorRules: I would be excited, but I have been reminded that Activision owns the IP.

Also, Hirchsberg is non-committal. Anyone who is observant enough would notice this.

This is little more than a click-bait article - as most GameSpot news articles are nowadays (and perhaps always have been).

Please don't ping me to any news article on GameSpot again.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: I want to forget. Being reminded of this just reminds me how far it has fallen. Activision was supposed to help budding developers make new games at the time, away from awful Atari - but just look at how it is now: it's a corporate monster.

@Gelugon_baat: LOL, ok then - I do agree seeing Activision being publisher of the game kinda drops down the hype.

I now want the Spyro collection remaster because even though Crash 1 is annoying as hell now it was even back then so in a way I am glad they kept the nostalgia even in the form of frustration lol. But Spyro needs a come back even if it's a remaster

If they remove the "difficulty" because some ridiculously petulant video game reviewers voted it down because of it, the game will be ruined.

I don't think they should make NEW Crash games UNLESS these folks truly understand the original Crash Bandicoot formula and what made it such a hit years ago and swear not to change that. On the other hand, remakes? Yes! The next one should be Crash Team Racing! The original PS1 game. I spent countless hours racing and sliding turbo boosting little go karts around those awesome tracks!!

@playstationzone: Well, they just followed the Naughty Dog blueprints of the PS1 games when making the N Sane games.

The minute they will think to "innovate" upon the blueprints they got from Naughty Dog, is the minute this franchise will be once again doomed. (Just look at what happend past PS1 era of these games)

Personally, while I'm loving my time with Crash, and would love to play a remake of CTR, I'm kinda in the mood for a remake of the Spyro trilogy next.

I don't know how I feel about the possibility of new Crash games though, Vicarious Visions seems to have proved themselves with this remake, but then I also thought that of 343i when they remade Halo: CE, but then 4 and 5 both turned out to garbage, so I'm less willing to just outright trust that they can make a new game.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: The biggest problem with WoC is that it basically takes the stupid amount of non-platforming levels from Warped and then dials it up to eleven. And then adds those stupid atlasphere puzzles. And crappy loading.

Like, Warped was a great game, but it had way, way, way too many levels where the focus was less on platforming and more on vehicular hijinks. I'll give the two Tiger levels a pass because they were actually fun, but you have four motorbike levels, four jetski levels, three plane levels and two underwater levels on top of them. That's fifteen out of 32 levels; 30 if you don't count the two secret warp room levels that aren't really levels at all. That's roughly _half the game_ and works out to about two vehicle levels per warp room. It's not so bad with the tiger and underwater levels since they actually feel like proper platformers, but I got quickly fed up with the others and just wanted to play Cortex Strikes Back again.

@FefnirOmega13: Well I don't recognize that. I loved the first 2 ones, but Warped just had more spice in it to like it even more.

I can say the mini-CTR level in WoC was crap though. But even with the magic tower and snow platforming levels it just doesn't feel right. The sphere levels were the only cool addition in WoC

Oh they are making more for sure. As far as UK is concerned Crash is the biggest launch of all the exclusives this year including Horizon and second biggest launch if you include all games. Only Wildlands had better launch.

I never liked the logic of buy the remake or remaster of a game most have played already long ago and got their fill of to prove that people will or wont buy a NEW game. If it's it's a new game that's good and advertised well on top of not given a stupid release date, people WILL buy it. Crash is still a big enough name where that alone can give him consumer benefit of the doubt that most other franchises like. It's up to Activision to not waste that opportunity.

However it's clear to me that they are thinking only in terms of Crash being a 5m+ seller but don't want to do the work in making sure that in the LONG RUN the series can pull those numbers every installment. Basically, use the first new game to regain consumer interest and trust as well as bring in new people so that all combined they can easily get the games to such figures in each follow up installment. Instead, they'll just throw out a new game hoping for those numbers automatically and if it doesn't pull them put it back on the shelf. When greed, laziness and impatience keep you from getting what you actually want.

You'd think companies would remember just how popular even an average tier mascot character below the likes of Crash was back in the day and how even Sonic with his many stumbles for the past 20 years is STILL a beloved figure that people give chance after chance to become loved and relevant again. Plus Nintendo singlehandily show that mascot characters still sell a shit ton because they are handling that brand in a way where people always want them.

There's just so much leniency for a characters like Crash to screw up and still remain popular and successful, as well as a blue print for what to do and what not do by Mario and Sonic yet companies are sleeping on the goldmines. They do this yet WANT the money these type of franchises and characters are capable of pulling. It's mind boggling

@xOmniCloudx: Well the Netflix thing with their "We want to cancel successful shows because we want to take risks" comes in.

Nintendo also gets a ton of crap for recycling the same Mario things for the 150th time. If other companies also stuck to their "tried and proven" brands then we probably wouldn't have got Mass Effect, Bioshock, Uncharted, Gears of War since no one has the resources to keep both the old alive and push for new. Ofc whether someone thinks that is good or bad is personal taste.

Besides Crash clearly started a decline. Crash Bash was a different game but it went to the genre where mascots triumph yet it didn't do so well. Then came the Wrath of Cortex, Nitro Kart, Twinsanity which were just store filler, and then the "rebooted" Mutant games which were even worse. Not that they were terrible, but they weren't very good either.

Sure you could say that Wrath of Cortex, Tag Team etc. could have been amazing bank breakers if done right, but you could say that about absolutely every game. Bioshock, Dead Space, Ninja Gaiden aren't really mascot-level games yet lots of people wanted and want Hayabusa, Master Chief, Kratos etc. to feature in this and that game as a guest. Because the games are awesome and turn the ordinary characters into mascots.

@jonnybrownieboy: Forget about it. Most of the original cast of Naughty Dog who did Crash 1-3 & Team Racing in the 90's are far gone.

Today's ND are all about making hollywood cinematic games, such as the Uncharted series & The Last of Us games.

@jonnybrownieboy: I love ND but fact is most the team that made Crash aren't at ND anymore so no matter who does it, it will be mostly new people. The original creators who haven't been with ND in forever have offered their input and help to ANY new studio who does a Crash game to make sure they capture the spirit and point of a Crash game. ND is far from being the only one who can make a brand new Crash game that's good, especially now.
