Monster Hunter XX Confirmed For Nintendo Switch

Capcom makes surprise announcement of new Monster Hunter for Switch.

128 Comments

Capcom has announced that Monster Hunter XX will be released for the Nintendo Switch. The game appeared on the company's official Japanese website, but no further details were provided.

The Monster Hunter Championship event is scheduled to take place this weekend, and it's likely more about the game, and its Switch version, will be discussed there.

Monster Hunter XX is an expanded version of Monster Hunter Generations that was originally only announced for the Nintendo 3DS. Generations was released in the west in July 2016, some eight months after its Japanese launch.

Capcom has not yet announced a release date for Monster Hunter XX on 3DS or Switch. It also hasn't confirmed that they will be available outside of Japan. Historically, however, Monster Hunter games are localized and made available in other territories, they just take a little extra time to come out.

The next big showcase of upcoming Switch titles will be at E3 2017. Nintendo has detailed its plans for for the show and it includes a Nintendo Direct-like stream, treehouse events, and tournaments. You can find out more about Nintendo's E3 2017 plans here.

I gave up trying to play MH on handhelds after 4 so this is good news. This and Xenoblade 2 will be my reasons to finally get a Switch.

I consider this being almost like a new game for Switch. Not sure why people are like, meh just another port. It's an expanded version of the 3DS version, and it will probably have much improved graphics for the TV screen. It would be different if this was an old Wii U game. Personally, if they announced an enhanced version of Zelda Link Between Worlds designed for the Switch I would jump on it in an instant, it would be like getting another brand new Zelda for me. (I never owned a 3DS).

Thats cool n all but it’s still a 3DS game more or less… I’ve been waiting to get into the series once they made a better version of it since there was no way in heck I was getting another 3DS but I know I won’t be able to wait anymore once it drops on Switch

In other words, it's a remake of a portable version?

@xolivierx:

Uh..kinda.
Monster Hunter XX released on the Nintendo 3DS as well. So both Monster Hunter Generations and Monster Hunter XX both released on the 3DS. So this XX title isn't specifically made for Switch.

In other words, we don't know if this is going to be a remake or a remaster of sorts. I hope that it is more of a remake.

@doctor_mg: Capcom does this with all the Monster Hunter games, its not a straight port, its an enhanced one. The visuals will be console level, there will be more content and they may even add gameplay mechanics.

@xolivierx: Not a remake, but and expanded version. It's all the original content plus the G-rank content, which usually means another 3-4 hours of main story and another 20-30 MP specific hunts.

I'd prefer to see a full original entry on the Switch, but this is good news. Hopefully they don't just shove it on the Switch and call it a day. They definitely will need to increase the asset quality.

For once Capcom is delivering games people want, First Dragon's Dogma on current gen consoles, fingers crossed for a switch version, now Monster Hunter on the big screen, I like my 3DS but the controls hold back monster hunting games, big screen with accurate controls is a big win, now Switch just needs a Pokemon RPG to fulfill all I want from the system, then everything else is a bonus.

LMAO at all the Nintendo haters.

Face it, the Switch is hot shit. The most fun I've had with a console in a long time.

If I want beast graphics, I play on my PC. If I want great exclusives, I play my PS4. If I want Halo, Gears and Forza, my XBone has me covered.

But if I just want to have some fun on the go, or impromptu gaming sessions in public places, it's Switch all the way...

@aross2004: That's kinda ironic since the switch is marketed as a home console first by nintendo. By the way I have never played with mine outside home. I d rather use my smaller phone when on the move.

@zinten:

I think it is funny that you guys continue trying to deploy this rhetoric as if it actually means something. All of the Switch's hardware is in the portable portion itself. Whether Nintendo markets it as a home console or handheld is beside the point. The only reason they are marketing it that way is to make investors happy. Their stock would drop something fierce if they just said "We are dropping the home console market, but here is a portable that can dock".

@doctor_mg: No it wouldn't, if anything it may go up. Nintendo owns the handheld market and its much cheaper to focus on a single piece of hardware vs two. I'm sure some investors would love if Nintendo did that.

@Sepewrath: There are still games being made specifically for the 3ds. They would be screwing over a lot of developers and 3ds owners if it were a replacement. They may eventually discontinue the 3ds but it won't be immediately. The power difference alone is huge alone: the new 3ds is 4.8 gigaflops, while the switch can achieve 1000 gigaflops. That's a huge difference for the switch to be just a 3ds replacement.

@joshrmeyer: The 3DS will be replaced sooner, rather than later given the success of the Switch. However it doesn't screw anyone over. The Switch functions perfectly as a handheld, so games designed as handheld experience for the 3DS can just be eshop games on Switch. The system supports both worlds, console devs and handheld devs.

@Sepewrath: Oh yeah, I didn't think of the eShop. I guess that'd work pretty well. It does seem pointless for anyone to buy a 3ds anymore, so I kinda hope they stop production and focus on the Switch.

@Sepewrath:

Saying they are dropping the console market would shake investor confidence. Imagine if Sony said they would stop making speakers? While some investors would love for Sony to focus on just Playstation there would be many that would think their financial earnings aren't viable to keep them afloat and pull out.

@doctor_mg: If Sony cut some of the fat, basically failing or struggling legs of their business, it would improve the outlook for many. If some choose to leave because of a lack of diversity, they would be replaced by those who like the laser focus. The same would apply to Nintendo, if they had lost all status in the console market, very few investors would lament them leaving it behind. Like I doubt people were abandoning Sega when they made the move to leave the console market after several consecutive market disasters.

You have a point there regarding Sega. Their stock increased when they decided they were to leave the hardware market.

The fact that I can take it on the go just makes it even better.

@zinten: yeah. Just because Nintendo marketed it as a home console, doesn't mean it is. I have only docked to charge it and play all around my house. It is a handheld to me. I'd rather play Xbox one or ps4 when using my big screen....

@Zzshock: Well yea i have only bought the switch because of the exclusives. If monster hunter gets released on the xb1 or ps4 i would get one of those versions to play at home instead.
