Now Playing: GS News Update: Monster Hunter World Sets A New All-Time Capcom Sales Record

Monster Hunter World is notable in a number of ways. It was the first new core Monster Hunter entry to appear on consoles in the better part of a decade and--while still challenging--it's more welcoming of newcomers than previous installments. Through its first two weeks, those decisions have paid off.

Capcom announced last month that Monster Hunter World enjoyed the strongest first three days of any entry in the series, with 5 million units shipped worldwide across PS4 and Xbox One. As of February 9, that figure has now reached 6 million units--something it's done faster than any game in Capcom's history, according to the publisher. Bear in mind, this number accounts for digital sales and the number of units shipped to retailers (but not necessarily sold through to consumers).

The series record came as little surprise, given that the game launched for PS4 and Xbox One, the combined install base of which eclipsed 3DS, which recent entries were exclusive to. World also had the benefit of a simultaneous worldwide launch, thereby bolstering its launch sales figures. Nonetheless, it's clear that interest in the new RPG has been strong.

As we've noted previously, Monster Hunter World is a great place for newcomers to jump onboard with the series. It's also just a strong game in general, as you can read about in our Monster Hunter World review.

Meanwhile, a new Monster Hunter World update has been released that fixes some multiplayer issues and makes balance changes for Bowgun users. New playable content is on the way, with the first free monster being added this spring and more game-inspired gear also confirmed.

I know that I said this series will likely kill Dragon's Dogma (and I thought Lost Planet was pronounced dead years ago), BUT DD is an ARPG and it does similar things to MH while still doing some things differently. ARPGs sure are popular lately and DD fits in while still feeling unique. And it's not like they can produce nothing but MH games. I think it's very reasonable to expect DD will get a second look.

If this game was exclusive it wouldn’t sale that much and also sold more than handled game and ps2 exclusive game .

Avatar image for Barighm

@playstationzone: Perhaps so, but with Japanese games the multiplat thing doesn't usually mean as much as it does with western games. More likely the sale uptick is the result of curious console/mainstream PC gamers who never got a taste of MH. Dark Souls had the same jump in sales when it was released, but none of the sequels performed as well.

We'll probably discover that the majority of MHW's sales are concentrated in Japan/Europe on the PS4 and China for the PC.

It’s worth $60. Simple as that.

@millionsedge: I dare say it's worth more. One time through gameplay alone is 60+ hours. Imagine the replay value.

The 3ds games were fun, but I think its time MH said goodbye to the handheld.

Nice. I’ve only very briefly played one Monster Hunter game, Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii, but I thought it was a pretty cool game. I’m having an awesome time with this game.

Do you guys think that MH will replace RE as capcom's flagship franchise ?

Avatar image for solid_snake1461
solid_snake1461

@dorog1995: RE4 was a masterpiece. 5 was pretty good, but not great. 6 is a disaster. 7 is barely ok. With a downward trend in quality like that, I wouldn’t call a series that is nothing but a shell of its former glory a flagship. In the meantime, Monhun has been secretly keeping the company afloat. If this game had been a failure, then Capcom would have been done for.

@dorog1995: I think it already did.

I really hope this leads to another look at Dragons Dogma and/or Lost Planet. Would definately pick DD though because that game just needs a sequel!

Avatar image for Barighm
Barighm

@trenchcoats67: Actually, if anything, this is more likely to kill Dragon's Dogma or Lost Planet because Capcom will now see Monster Hunter as far more rewarding, thus they will prioritize it in all forms of resource allocation.

'Tis a shame. MH is great and all but it's fairly one dimensional whereas Dragon's Dogma is a better all around RPG.

@trenchcoats67: The wind is pushin' me to pray for a sequel again, I feel the blood in my veins. I hope capcom finish Deep Down though it had a very Dragon's Dogma/Dark Souls look to it.

still not welcoming enough for newcomers. i personally think systems need to be more streamlined. have an option in the settings to display a monsters health bar. also there is far to many "stun the player" moments in this game when control completely gets taken away from you the player which in my opinion should never happen.

Avatar image for TerrorRizzing
TerrorRizzing

@xnshd: no, don't ruin the game.

Avatar image for mister_b
Mister_B

@xnshd: I agree that MH has been tough for newcomers but they have gotten way better.

But adding a health bar would kill the whole experience. You know how much health it has when it starts to limp.

Avatar image for solid_snake1461
solid_snake1461

@xnshd: maybe they should have added the lootbox system to this game. So that newcomers can gamble their luck and money for high end gear from the beginning of the game. That way, they wouldn’t feel like they’re being taught how to swim by being thrown into a shark tank.

But then again, if you’re bad at learning the monster, they would simply two shot you anyway, instead of one.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b67c31f99e76

@xnshd: if you need that much hand holding then the game is not for you. It is just welcoming enough for new players while staying true for vets

Avatar image for xnshd
xNSHD

@apeman16: clearly dont understand what im saying. the things im mentioning will not ruin the games for the so called vets you speak of which i personally think are just people who dont like progress.

Avatar image for TerrorRizzing
TerrorRizzing

@xnshd: streamlining everything will ruin the game.

Avatar image for xnshd
xNSHD

@TerrorRizzing: really wouldn't what im asking for is making things better. like a health bar option for people who want it. no stun locks as there just bullshit and for systems to actually get explained as right now they don't get explained. for example the whole purpose of affinity, why you can't go back after upgrading a weapon so far, how do you unlock more option in the botonist etc. i could go on for days.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b67c31f99e76

@xnshd: Sure, sure I don't understand why your first comment was so silly

Avatar image for xnshd
xNSHD

@apeman16: silly asking for some quality of life improvements to a game that the core fanbase hypes up to high heavens okay. also for the record ive 1000'd DS3 and completed every souls game in the series this game isnt hard its just annoying due to the things i mentioned. also i never said this game was bad its pretty good actually just i shouldnt have to wikipedia how to do things in a game due to not being told.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b67c31f99e76

@apeman16: Maybe you should try doing a little research before you try a new franchise of game to see if it has an easy mode and tells you what to do. For anyone who did a small amount of research would know what the game is and see if it was for them or not

Avatar image for oromashu

@xnshd: it's all about immersion. you're a hunter and you read the monster's tells to know what their health is like. getting "stunlocked" only really happens if you don't know the attack patterns that well. like any challenging game, it's hard at first, but overtime it becomes a lot easier.

Avatar image for xnshd
xNSHD

@oromashu: you get stun locked from basically everything if it hits you which isnt good game design the end.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b67c31f99e76

@xnshd: They have this new mechanic in the game which has probably never been used before so not many people have heard of it. The name of this revolutionary new mechanic is "dodge" or "dodging"

P.s no need to thank me for letting you know about this secret.

Avatar image for xnshd
xNSHD

@apeman16: cant exactly dodge a roar that stun locks me. nice try being cocky.

Avatar image for firepistol95
FirePistol95

@xnshd: U do know their is a skill tht blocks out monster roars right? Anyways the only things tht get u stun locked is if u get hit 3 or 4 times in quick succession (not the taps tht make u flinch) or the roars or ground tremors or wind pressure. I cant understand how its bad game design? Being annoyed doesnt mean bad game design. But its fine if the game is not for u. If u want something a lil more handhold-y then DS is there for u. (and no I dont mean DS is easy in general, its just more directed.) Some of the fun is finding ways around these things and knowing the secrets tht the game doesnt tell u. Why do u think its massively successful in Japan? Has its own attraction in USJ? If it wasnt "good game design" then the series sales wuld've dropped 5 years ago.

Avatar image for xnshd
xNSHD

@firepistol95: i get stun locked by a roar a stun lock is when control gets taken away from the player. which is what happens when they roar which is very frequently. i shouldnt have to put on a skill just to stop that from happening it simply shouldnt be a thing as taking away the control from the player should never happen in a game its bad game design plain and simple. also dark souls is just more fair its not more handholdy it doesnt show you where to go at all just doesnt have the bullshit thats in this game like stun locks from a roar of all things. its popular in japan because its a japanese game shocker.

Avatar image for firepistol95
FirePistol95

@xnshd: Just sounds like excuses to justify nitpicks. (also more than other ways to get around a roar than just a skill. But I doubt u had tried to find a way, coming from u, a DS player where their are ways to defeat a boss...) If it was a "shocker" then it wuld've been a fad but its not (or am I mistaken ur term?). and u didnt get wht I meant by how DS was a bit more "handhold-y", but anyways I found the series a bit too easy for my tastes. (The world, lore, music and boss designs is wht kept me going when marathoning the trilogy; took me about 3 weeks total; 5 days for the 1st DS) Anyways, it sounds like a series not for u and I know wht ur going to say next, so might as well save ur breath. I know this is going to end up going nowhere in the discussion, and I dont hav the patience, so im ending it here.

Avatar image for xnshd

@firepistol95: we all no the asian population loves handhelds and since all the games pretty much the this series are handheld its no surprise they do well. hell animal crossing does well look at that crock of shite. im sorry for pointing out flaws in your favourite game but they are there and they are big. i don't find this game difficult in any manner whatsoever so that isn't the issue. just like i said entire systems are completely not explained which needs to be changed along with stun locking it doesn't matter what the game is control should never be taken away from the player. its irrelevant if there are ways to cancel it out it should NEVER happen player control is number one in games you take that away then whats the point.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

@xnshd: I think if they actually put in a monsters health bar it would be somewhat demoralising instead of constantly watching the monsters behaviour you'd be looking at this long ass health bar while thinking "ugh die already".

Avatar image for xnshd
xNSHD

@gamingdevil800: i aint watching a monsters behaviour im just hitting him thing when this bastard die and its boring. its 2017 not 1993 health bars have been invented. also if the vets as someone put it don't like it thats fine just have it an option in the settings to turn it on or off. quite simple.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b67c31f99e76

@xnshd: actaully it's 2018

Avatar image for Barighm
Barighm

@gamingdevil800: Agreed. If anything, they should have more tells. More blood on the monster. Broken horns. Limps. All that stuff. They already do, but just moreso. That's just as telling to me as a health bar but way cooler.

Avatar image for tonyleo01
tonyleo01

@Barighm: The monsters don't get super bloody, but they are visibly beaten up as you wear them down. Slash wounds, missing armor scales etc. I actually often time do feel bad for them more so here than on the 3DS as the graphics are much more realistic :(

Maybe that's why they don't make the monsters look too messed up because then it will be borderline monster cruelty?

Avatar image for xnshd

@mister_b: not trolling just not the epic 10/10 the hardcore fans are giving it. also im just saying what it could improve on or add to make it more accessible to newcomers as there is entire systems that dont get explained at all to people.

Avatar image for Barighm

@lionheartssj1: Yeah, but games don't ship an additional 1 million copies that quickly unless they're running low on the initial shipment, so it's selling fast.
