Monster Hunter World Launch: Review Roundup (Updated)

Is Monster Hunter World worth your time?

Monster Hunter World's release date has come around fast, with just hours left until the game is playable around the world on both PS4 and Xbox One. A PC release is coming later this year, but until then it's just console players who can enjoy the open-world action.

But how enjoyable is it? You might already have an idea if you've joined in one of the game's multiple PS4 betas. Now, however, reviews of the full game have begun to go live around the world. In our verdict, we said World is "likely the biggest and best that the franchise has ever been." Check out our in-depth thoughts in our Monster Hunter World review. Alternatively, read on for a selection of other critics' reviews, or head over to GameSpot sister site Metacritic for a wider view of critical reception.

  • Game: Monster Hunter World
  • Developer / Publisher: Capcom
  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
  • Release date: Out now (PS4, Xbox One) / 2018 (PC)
  • Price: US $60 / £50 / AU $110

GameSpot -- 8/10

"Ever since the title was first announced last year, it was clear that Capcom was gunning for something grander than Monster Hunter Generations. It has succeeded, and this is likely the biggest and best that the franchise has ever been. It's not just the comparative depth of the narrative; it also boasts almost seamless integration between combat systems that were previously incomprehensible for amateurs. The Monster Hunter formula has definitely honed its claws, and all the above factors play their part in making Monster Hunter World a meaningful evolution for the series at large." -- Ginny Woo [Full review]

Polygon -- 9/10

"Monster Hunter: World is still complex. It still won't hold your hand through parts and may require a few friends for optimal enjoyment. It isn't for everybody, but if you give it a little time and work, it's a world worth visiting." -- Chelsea Stark [Full review]

IGN -- 9.5/10

"Whether or not it's the best, this is certainly the most audacious Monster Hunter game. World takes a dramatic leap into a look, feel, and size that feels truly new, simultaneously staying true to the series' ideals by maintaining the addictive loop of combat, intimidating monsters and meaningful upgrades that fans love. The sheer depth and commitment required is still intense, but it clearly isn't Capcom's aim to court a casual crowd. This is as all-consuming and incredible a ride as ever." -- Joe Skrebels [Full review]

Eurogamer -- Essential

"Invest a little, though, and you'll get an awful lot back. The truth of Monster Hunter--and arguably its greatest strength--is that you're never truly its master, and that every player, be they novice or veteran, is always learning something new. Monster Hunter World sees 13 years of evolution come crashing together with some new influences to create a very exciting breed of beast. This has always been a superlative series; with the release of World, it's only become easier to see that's an undoubtable truth." -- Martin Robinson [Full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 5/5

"Monster Hunter World is an incredible achievement. It manages the nearly impossible feat of taking a franchise known (and in many corners beloved) for it's incredible complexity and depth and making it significantly more approachable, without in any way stripping it down or diminishing it." --Alan Bradley [Full review]

GamesBeat -- 90/100

"Monster Hunter World is one of the more rewarding action role-playing games I've played in recent years. The game is enjoyable either solo or with other players, and it manages to take advantage of modern hardware to envelop you in a beautiful world. I never got into Monster Hunter before, but now I can't wait for this game to officially be out so I have more people to play with." -- Mike Minotti [Full review]

Destructoid -- 9/10

"If you've been skipping out on Monster Hunter games for a while because they seem to blend together, jumping into World is your chance to get in. Just know that Capcom hasn't really shaken up the formula enough to piss off veterans or appeal to people who don't welcome grinding with open arms." -- Chris Carter [Full review]

Generally speaking, Japanese developed games have taken a sharp nose dive since the 90's. I haven't played this, and don't intend to, but it's not shocking that the game lacks the proper optimization (according to many players and YouTube videos). Japanese third party games usually have the controls inverted and the control is usually clunky. Not to mention I can't stand the look of everything anime. Just not a game for me. I'll stick with my Horizon Zero Dawn, Last of Us, God of War, and Uncharteds (on PS4 that is). All my multiplat games have moved to the X because of the better resolution, framerate, and gameplay.

@Eddie619: Hopefully Detroit Become Human doesn't get banned though. Dev reckons they are not changing the game under any circumstances so it will be interesting what censors of various countries say about that.

Sending my flares up and always getting someone from Japan helping the fight haha. Guess it's better than having no one join for sure. Just thought it was funny... Guess this is selling really good in Japan as expected.

Another game hit with the Japanese RPG hate tax from Gamespot, and as usual it's a 1 point penalty. Always add 1 and you'll get the real score, which in this case is the 90 on metacritic.

@7tizz: I don't get the love for PUBG, it drop, pray you don't get shot for 3 minutes, camp for 25 minutes, chicken dinner, repeat.

I'm glad to finally have a game that involves gameplay.

@7tizz: This game is better than PUBG. Xbox boys will never understand nor be inclined to play GREAT games. Your console made your mind numb to love mediocre multiplat entertainment only.

@joannadark360: I have it on Pro... Looks and runs great. Seeing as how no one in Japan buys Xbox and this game more or less requires other people to progress, there's no way I'd buy it on Xbox. The majority of people I play with are Japanese.

@joshrmeyer: It runs ok on pro but there is controller lag and pretty low performance in parts. The biggest issues is frame pacing issues on both consoles even though X runs substantially better in performance mode compared to pro. This was likely to happen just with the differences in strengths between the two though. Best for graphics and performance will obviously be PC .

If you want to see what smooth looks like have a look at Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 Pro that is truly stunning and Digital Foundry have just finished a fantastic look at this game. Quite possibly it is the best article i have seen them done so far.

Definitely one to pick up on PS4 Pro as it has a 60 fps pretty much locked performance mode and a 1440p upscaled to 4k 30 mode as well. Both are smooth with no issues other than an occasional frame skip or two.

@7tizz: There are ranged weapons in this game, so you can indeed shoot things. Since that appears to be your criteria for whether a game is good or not, you should check it out.

Played the first beta; wasn't impressed. Missed the second beta; but the third beta sold me on it for some reason. Not really hyped for the game, per se; but still looking forward to it.

And what's up with GameSpot's review? GS has to be the odd man out once again or something?

@ltjohnnyrico: Most of the reviews for the game, the great majority to be specific, are above 90% or it's equivalent. Then there's Gamespot with it's 80%... I could understand the logic, I really do; but it just seems that GS has to be different with their reviews nowadays for some reason. This isn't just based on one review; it's seems to be the trend from the last year or so.

Gamespot review by far the funniest one.

"Difficulty spike in end-game content can be daunting to the inexperienced"

Pretty sure end game content was supposed to be hard. Thats like the whole point of end game contents. By the time ur at end game ur not inexperienced anymore!

@sakaixx: I'm pretty sure he's referring to those inexperienced with the series as a whole. While those familiar with the games are used to the jump in enemy difficulty when transitioning to high rank or fighting endgame monsters like the fatalises (Fatalisis? Fatali?), I can see someone who has never played an MH game being thrown off by the sudden increase in difficulty.

I don't think I'll ever forget being one-shot by Black Fatalis the first time I ever fought him by him simply strutting forward and touching the tip of my toe.

@Doomerang: its end game. Where u already mastered the basics, its time to tackle the more powerful monster in END GAME CONTENT.for sake its in the END GAME. grind loot, work in a team to beat it, like every other game. Its how u keep players in long term. Make them engaged.

@JEF8484: Not really , they have to cater for everyone and not just hardcore nuts that think the game is the ducks nuts when it clearly is not. I just wish a decent dev took care of the game as compared to the quality in the new Shadow of the colossus at least on console the overall frame rate and pacing is rather terrible . Why do so many Japanese devs struggle with frame pacing issues? They rarely ever address them properly even when it has been pointed out so many times either. FFXV is a perfect example on Pro where the hi res mode is a complete disaster it runs so poorly so why even bother in the first place and not just further enhance the lite mode instead.

Thankfully monster hunter is not that terrible but it still should be much better for the money they expect people to shell out day one for these so called AAA games. It doesn't help when reviewers deliberately hide these facts from people too. Luckily we have Youtube to spell out the issues with how the game runs overall and that the X is really the only version so far that even comes close to running smoothly.

I am not knocking the game , just the execution and seemingly lack of polish from the dev to ensure a smooth experience. If the consoles can't handle the strain then lower the graphics fidelity rather than sacrifice framerate and smoothness.
