Monolith to instill F.E.A.R. in PCs

The mystery project revealed last week by VU Games' newsletter gets a name and release date.

Last week, VU Games included a teaser shot from an unidentified first-person shooter in its weekly newsletter. Today, that mystery has a name--F.E.A.R.

Although the acronymic moniker might lead one to think it is related to Contract J.A.C.K, another Monolith/VUG title, F.E.A.R.'s initials actually stand for First Encounter Assault and Recon. That's the name of a classified strike team that is dispatched to infiltrate a research facility after a Special Forces squad sent before them is massacred. Players will step into the boots of a member of F.E.A.R., whose mission is to find out the origin of a mysterious signal emitting from the base.

Though a joint press release from Monolith and VU Games didn't give many gameplay details, it did promise a "close-quarters combat experience with rich atmosphere and an engaging storyline." It also confirmed that F.E.A.R. would be for the PC, gave an approximate ship date of 2005, and predicted the game would have a rating of "M" for mature.

GameSpot will have more information on F.E.A.R., which will be on display at E3, as it becomes available.
