Momentum Hands-On Impressions

We fight inertia to get up to speed on Blue Ridge Games' Momentum at E3.

Blue Ridge bursts onto the mobile gaming scene with Momentum, which is purportedly the first in a smattering of massive multiplayer online games for mobile platforms. This introductory installment begins in a lobby with which every online PC gamer should be familiar. While there, you can chat with up to six other players, choose an avatar, and examine the skill levels of other players. Your character’s level is saved from one session to the next, and as you level up in skill you are placed in games with people of similar experience. There is a set time period for players to join the lobby before the game starts; regardless of whether or not there are five other humans to play the game, the game will start within a minute with all slots filled with either human players or artificial intelligence players.

The game is played inside a maze, much like Pac-Man. Also like Pac-Man, you’re essentially trying to swallow dots. However, instead of dots, it’s coins. And instead of many coins all lined up in a row, it’s a few coins that randomly appear and disappear (albeit at fairly long intervals) and move around the maze, forcing you to chase after them. Every coin you get increases your points, which you in turn use to “attack” your opponents. Each time you run directly into an opponent, the person with the most points kills the other causing the other to respawn in a random location in order to regroup. The game ends when one player has all the points and the others are essentially dead.

Momentum is a very easy game to get into with a relatively quick learning curve. The ease of use in connecting to the server was a welcome change from the norm, and it lead to a satisfactory gaming experience overall.
