Modern Warfare 3 tops $1 billion in 16 days

Activision's latest Call of Duty breaks Avatar's record, reaching massive revenue milestone 24 hours faster than James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster film.

If there's one thing Activision wants people to know, it's that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been hugely successful. The publisher released press releases touting the game as the biggest launch in entertainment history after a single day on shelves, and then again after five days. Today, Activision echoed the sentiment once more, saying that Modern Warfare 3 reached $1 billion faster than any other entertainment property, needing just 16 days on sale.

Modern Warfare 3 has toppled Avatar, so what's left to take aim at?
Modern Warfare 3 has toppled Avatar, so what's left to take aim at?

The publisher said the "fastest to $1 billion" title was previously held by James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar. That film reached the milestone on its 17th day of release.

Beyond the fastest-selling claim, Activision also said the Call of Duty community has swollen to 30 million gamers, and pointed out that the number is larger than the combined populations of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, and Madrid. The newly launched Call of Duty Elite service is not quite so sizable, with a total membership of 6 million players, of which 1 million are paying subscribers.

Activision said its shooter franchise is "now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release."

For more on the first-person shooter behind the records, check out GameSpot's review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

I hate COD because there are no tactics invovled and no team work...it is all about "I" and the game is designed that way. Also the COD community treats other gamers like crap and if you are not on top of the leaderboards you are worthless as a gamer. If you take the K/D Ratio stat out of the game the COD will die because COD centers all around this stat. Very sad, but true!

Battlefield fans always spend more time in Call of Duty pages, while Call of Duty and Skyrim fans just play their games and are enjoying. Haters hate. Thumbs down losers.

@Corrupted_Wolf : I see where you're coming from but keep in mind that the record is which title reached the $1billion mark faster..not how many units have been sold or the overall income.Avatar could still have made more profit in the end.But this is what I am saying...this is like saying it is a major ''in your face'' to pass the sales records of Gone with the Wind when Gone with the wind charged 25cents a ticket (at that time) and the current movie charges $10.Do you really consider it an accomplishment or even legit to say an at least $60 game (not mentioning the $180 copies so many purchased) reached a pricepoint faster than a $10 ticket? You could buy Avatar tickets for a whole family for the same price of one CoD game.If CoD was really selling as well as Avatar is should have sold at least 6X's faster than Avatar. But to say you have only beaten a title in 1 day when you had a 6X's advantage? That actually sounds pretty disgraceful to me...

The graphics seem a little muddy to me in this one. I noticed that MW2 was crisper looking than COD4, but I was disappointed with the lack of improvement this time around. I know they are using the same game engine, but they could have at least added some better graphics options for PC. At least they improved the sound a little bit. Treyarch did a terrible job with sound on both COD5 and Black Ops. Infinity Ward although a new group of people didn't do a terrible job, but the game wasn't very engaging. It seems like the enemies have an inordinate amount of health this time, most noticeably in Spec Ops/Survival. I just hope that now that Activision has more money than GOD, they use some of it to hire some people to create a new game engine, or at least explore using something more modern.

There are two types of complainers about MW3: those who say the game doesnt change enough, and those who say it changes too much. Only one of these actually cares about the game.

What possibly got them a lot money in the PC sector was because the game didn't need a godly computer to play in-fact if you could play Black Ops you could play MW3 but at a lower graphics setting. Meanwhile BF3 you maybe had to upgrade the computer just to play it (and a higher-end graphics cards don't come cheap these days) so if the people wanted to have a 2011 game with out spending about 12K in Computer Parts they probably pick MW3 as there FPS pick

@cstv bug-thes-da? What the hell. Texture issues on the 360? It's hardly a flaw in the gameplay itself. I've got it for the PS3 and the only 'bug' I found was my own fault. I climbed up a rock and couldn't get back down :P Skyrim is perfection.

@tatsundere Got to disagree. I'm a hater of the game, not because it isn't great, but because they churn out the same thing every year with little to no changes. The games are good as a one off, for example to new buyers. But for fans of the series it's getting a little stale. The review on this website even said it's same old same old. Predictable. That's the reason we hate the game buddy, we never said the game itself was crap.

@ Superiorness Call of Duty is not a polished series. Modern Warfare 1 was, admittedly, a great game. However Modern Warfare 2 was just the same with added MP features (features that broke the MP more than anything else). Black Ops was a failure, a boring SP campaign and MP not really changing still. Same goes for Modern Warfare 3 now. It's good entertainment but lies on the same level as the Transformer movies. They're summer blockbusters but that's it. My personnal hate towards this game is that it offers nothing spectacular, a new one is released every year with the same re-used recipe but the price tag is still 60$. It's basically paying full price for a DLC. Granted CoD isn't the only franchise guilty of that, but it doesn't excuse them, especially when they use primitive technology (I'm talking about Quake 3 tech. That old.). That's why I don't like the CoD games after the first Modern Warfare and that I'll never understand how they can sell so much.

Can somebody explain to me the hate that Call of Duty attracts? It's been the most polished and accessible shooter franchise since the launch of the generation. Sure, the sequels don't offer massive changes like the jump from Oblivion to Skyrim, but instead offer technical improvements and new maps/guns/modes/campaign etc. Its just more of a good thing. The reason that there is a new release every year is because there is a DEMAND for it and they're SUPPLYING it.

the reason why people are buying more of the same COD is becos of the story. Its engrossing with sequences which are suspenseful and dramatic. The fact that MW2 ended as a cliffhanger helped too.
