Modern Warfare 3 tops $1 billion in 16 days

Activision's latest Call of Duty breaks Avatar's record, reaching massive revenue milestone 24 hours faster than James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster film.

If there's one thing Activision wants people to know, it's that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been hugely successful. The publisher released press releases touting the game as the biggest launch in entertainment history after a single day on shelves, and then again after five days. Today, Activision echoed the sentiment once more, saying that Modern Warfare 3 reached $1 billion faster than any other entertainment property, needing just 16 days on sale.

Modern Warfare 3 has toppled Avatar, so what's left to take aim at?

The publisher said the "fastest to $1 billion" title was previously held by James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar. That film reached the milestone on its 17th day of release.

Beyond the fastest-selling claim, Activision also said the Call of Duty community has swollen to 30 million gamers, and pointed out that the number is larger than the combined populations of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, and Madrid. The newly launched Call of Duty Elite service is not quite so sizable, with a total membership of 6 million players, of which 1 million are paying subscribers.

Activision said its shooter franchise is "now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release."

Talk about greedy. They make all this money, they don't have to do hardly any marketing at all, and they still can't put out good games.

@Richardthe3rd Indeed, what Activi$ion has there is a perfect low risk/high reward scenario for any corporation. They would need to lose a huge part of their CoD fanbase to stop being profitable, and I don't see that happening in the near future. We may dislike it a lot,but sadly,CoD is here to stay, its simply far too well established on the market to simply die...

@rocker6 That's exactly my point. Now that they have established their brand and people would buy everything with the title COD on it maybe they could spice things up a bit. They would profit either way. That is just wishful thinking though.

Avatar - scripts, actors, scheduling, massive graphical design, giant budget barrier, made over the course of 5 years... MW 3- copy/paste MW 2 Yet apparently from this article, MW 3 > Avatar. In comparison with the amount of work required to produce both media properties, WTF?!!!!

@Rocker6 Agreed. Why would Activision vary from this course? There's no incentive for them to redesign or recreate anything and much more incentive to just keep rehashing. MW3, and likewise MW2 before it, proved that people don't want innovation and apparently are more than happy to just rebuy the same game over and over. It's not milking when you're giving people exactly what they want. Corporations dream of low risk/ high reward scenarios they can capitalize on. CoD is the most extreme case of that in video games, and it would be irrational to expect them to ever deviate from that. Makes me a bit sick to my stomach to say that, because I think CoD is one of the most derivative, exploitative and unremarkable IP's in the market. But there it is, nonetheless.

Even though MW3 sales more than previous ones, we all can agree that COD have lost many of its long fans... I say now its time for Activision to improvise for the next COD so that all gamers can celebrate its glory without haters and troll.

I'm not sure about the comparison...I mean, Star wars and the like are still more popular to me...but numbers don't lie, I suppose.

@someonelsesgame Why would they ever reinvigorate the genre? They have a winning formula and strongly established worldwide brand getting a lot of advertisement from Activi$ion itself and from all the "haters" around the world. At this point, the quallity of CoD game doesn't even matter at all,its all just about the name. And yeah,I agree how it sucks that FPS genre will continue and be even more tiresome and bland...

This will only fuel the continuation of a tired FPS genre. I hope that this success would drive them to take chances with reinvigorating the genre.

This is incredible, the series is losing steam more and more with each year, yet the sales are skyrocketing.I suppose a gamer of today values simplicity and casuality over all.Very bad news for gamers like myself who actually like to be provided with a challenge without 100% handholding.CoD's major successes in a way hurts the gaming industry a lot by encouraging many developers to streamline their games for wider audiences hoping to draw some of CoD's masses. But in the end, they only screw their loyal fans.... On a side note, this news makes Moore's statement about BF3 taking some of CoD's market shares totally laughable...
