Modern Warfare 2 regains Call of Duty prefix

[UPDATE] Final box art for anticipated game carries name of original series; Activision confirms change, says title is series' "first true sequel."

When Modern Warfare 2 was announced during the Game Developers Choice Awards in March, it did not carry the same title prefix as its processor, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Ever since then, not one single television spot or announcement related to the game has referred to it as anything other than "Modern Warfare 2." Indeed, the name "Call of Duty" has been mentioned by publisher Activision only when referencing the game's developer, Santa Monica, California-based Infinity Ward.

Bask in the glory of the
Bask in the glory of the "first true sequel."

Now, though, Infinity Ward's director of communications and community manager has revealed that the prefix is back. In a Twitter post this afternoon, Robert Bowling announced that he "just received [sic] the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press. 'S*** just got real.'" The accompanying photo (pictured) shows the box as bearing the title "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2."

[UPDATE] Activision has now confirmed the change with the following statement:

Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title's package.

The name change's timing comes just a few weeks after a study from tracking firm OTX (cited by GamaSutra) found that the game's awareness level amongst potential buyers dropped 20 percent when it did not have the Call of Duty prefix in the title.

The return of the COD prefix also quashes the widely held belief amongst game-industry watchers that Modern Warfare was being spun off into its own independent franchise. Activision hinted that such a move was in the works when the publisher said that subseries had "taken on a life of its own" three months ago. It also remains unclear if Modern Warfare 2 is the "unique new IP" that Infinity Ward teased when its leading developers renewed their contracts with Activision last summer.

I guess money is so much important to them. I liked MW 2 only logo, now it looks too crowded.

I'm sure it's Activision who cried like babies for not having the Call of Duty name on the game because they knew Infinity Ward will make **** loads of money from that game... so they decided to slap the COD name on it, so they can sell this game under the COD name. Because that would hurt their big egos to have MODERN WARFARE break sales records, more than the previous COD games and kick their asses at the same time.

@lamprey263 Damn you beat me to it, thats just what I was going to say, that the average person doesnt know that Modern warfare 2 is actually part of the Call of duty series. Call of duty = world famous Modern warfare = Molded waffles? who'd be stupid enough to name a shooter that hahaha.

marketting research probably showed people didn't know they were the same series and could increase sales by keeping the prefix

Good decision. For the average joe casual gamer, seeing the Call of Duty brand on it is important for actually selling the game.

This doesn't surprise me at all. It's just a marketing move to try to get more money. I really think they don't want to be grouped into the same type of game made by Treyarch but they have to face the facts that "Call of Duty" is an extremely recognized name. Even Infinity Ward is called "Call of Duty 4" more than "modern warfare": Also this will make Treyarchs statement of a CoD 7 make more logical sense (many were calling it that even when MW2 dropped the CoD).

Pretty obvious that they wanted to create a new franchise and it didn't catch on like they hoped so they backed off - at least this year. Given how much more prominent Modern Warfare is on the box art, I wager they're setting the stage to try again with the next installment.

Weeelll, I never stopped calling it "That new Call of Duty game" anyhow :P Plus when you play COD, I think people will assume you play Modern Warfare 2 (or somesuch). Even if you don't, people get the general gist of "COD". I hate when someone asks me what games I like, and I don't want to say something like "Red Orchestra", so I end up having to say Halo or COD just to keep from weirding out people.

Glad they added it, now I can call it COD without someone harassing me. And did anyone look at the boxart? The way "Call of Duty" is put on there looks off to me. Also, I think we should all call this COD6, because many people (even though they are wrong) called WaW, 5. So calling this one COD5 would likely cause mass confusion. Technically it's 6th (not counting spinoffs) in the series so I think we should leave it at 6.

It doesn't matter. Even if IW just called it "Modern Warfare 2" and dropped the CoD IP, Activsion would still sell out the name to two-bit developers

I'm glad,I starded playing the CoD series when CoD2 was released and have played every one since(including CoD1 and United Offensive)and it just feels right to have that title still there.I dunno call me nostalgic but without the CoD title it just wouldn't feel the same.

I'm not sick of the COD tag personally. But I think that Infinity Ward should get out while they can if Treyarch is going to copy successful elements from them and steal their engine.

more importantly, the game is done already? isn't it supposed to come out in november? i mean i know they hold release dates for ideals times to ge the most bang for their buck, but october and even september marks the start of the christmas game shopping season. you would think if its done, they would try at least a month earlier. or its a suprise to me that they make boxes available before the disks are printed, i kinda assumed boxes and manuals and everything would be printed not very long before the final game is printed.

Wow so 20% of potential buyers dropped when it didn't have the Call Of Duty prefix in it? That's amusing. I don't really care if it didn't. I'm still going to get it! XD

It's just a marketing strategy and imo smart of them. The average customer doesn't follow video games like ppl who frequent GS. Call of Duty is a popular franchise. Although MW2 doesn't follow the original formula it's synonymous with a certain type of gameplay which ppl gravitate towards.

Horrible marketing strategy by dropping it. And casual gamers wouldnt know its a call of duty game if the name isnt on it and they never played a COD game. Theres new people joining the market all the time. At least they are correcting their blunder now

Though I see why it is smart for them to keep the COD in the name, I was actually hoping that IW would branch away and we would have 2 separate series going. I guess we could still see that anyway with the 2 developers alternating games, I mean in a sense that is what is happening anyway. Don't know I guess I just perferred the name change as a definitive separation between IW work and Trey.
