Modern Warfare 2 map pack due spring 2010

Activision, Monster Energy promotional material confirms add-on for anticipated military shooter will arrive for PS3, 360 next year.

The fuel that will keep Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer running.

Activision Blizzard certainly knows a thing or two about hauling in cash, as evidenced by the publisher's billion-dollar April-June quarter. In a post-earnings call, Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith tipped off investors and analysts as to how it plans to extend Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's sales beyond the game's rapidly approaching November 10 release, saying that the game will get a pair of map packs post-launch.

Today, Activision revealed the time frame for one of those map packs, as part of a giveaway for Modern Warfare 2-branded Monster Energy drinks that will go on sale in October. As part of a set of promotional materials provided to various media outlets, the Monster Energy packaging notes that 5,000 winners will be offered a free Modern Warfare 2 map pack, which has a "planned release" in spring 2010.

Activision declined to offer more information on the giveaway and would not comment on whether the spring 2010 map pack would be the first available for Modern Warfare 2. The Monster Energy prize opportunity also includes 100 copies of the game and 10,000 Modern Warfare 2 dashboard themes for the Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as a free can of Monster Energy drink.

Not even drinks are immune to the Modern Warfare 2 hype juggernaut.
Not even drinks are immune to the Modern Warfare 2 hype juggernaut.

The publisher has already enjoyed significant success with downloadable map packs for Call of Duty. In July, Activision said that the first two map packs for its most recent installment in the franchise, the 11-million-unit-selling World at War, have achieved combined sales of 4 million units. A third World at War map pack went on sale in August.

@rock solid And why is that? Were they realistic games before? Do you dislike Nazis being humiliated? I would love a reason. Map packs should have never been in any game. That right there is a valid point. As for this map pack though, give me the website of a boycotting group and sign me up. I hope all the kids out there will refrain from begging their parents to buy them this right when it comes out so we can get it for free. Maybe one of the World at War maps was worth the price, but Activision is trying to milk Call of Duty like it does with World of Warcraft.

What? A map pack is coming out 4-5 months after the game's release? I never saw that coming! Seriously, how is this news? Anyone who didn't anticipate map packs for this game hasn't been paying attention to the last four CoDs.

does anyone remember when microtransactions were supposed to be 25-50 cent downloads for maps and clothing options for characters. How that bloomed into 10 dollar downloads for tiny expansions I'll never know. I wonder what got cut out so there could be an add on already announced.

Oh and don't tell me guys haven't finished it yet. Most companies finish the games and extra content but even though they already have the content they will release it months later. this is f***cked up!

@Steel_Rain777 Yeah, like that guy of Activision (one of the bosses of that Developer) saying he want the price CODMW2 more than $60, like $90 of the game.

Hey Activision, here's an idea for you. Since you still got time to release the game why don't you put those worthless map packs IN the game? Oh wait I forgot you like to rip people off.

if they already know that they're going to put out dlc, they might as well just put it in the game now before the release.

There are news with PS3, that Activision will not put DLC of CODMW2 on PS3. This just demonstrate that is not true then. I was thinking to get it for PC, but they will release the DLC for PS3 then, I will get it for PS3 for Free online play like PC, but also, the Trophies =D.

I'd like to think that a great selling game would reward those that enjoy it... and have a 360 and a PS3... I doubt there will be a difference in price between the systems for the pack... aside from the $50 I pay every year for my live account..... already talking about new levels... is like a band that intended to release most of there new album but are planing to charge extra for a few tracks, to get the whole new album. lame

@_elite_bushido_ You do know that infinity ward takes time to develop their maps, because unlike activision they care about quality. Who says these extra maps are even going to be ready before MW2 ships? Also, you don't have to buy them. The original COD4 maps were way better than the ones you could download. Either way neither activision nor IW cares that your'e pissed off about them making more money.

Well damn. They should just let me play these maps before the game even comes out then if they are gonna start planning that early. Put it up for DL before the game is out...why not? It doesn't take a lot of time to make maps. If the game is done and they are 'planning', they can easily get that into the game. Money whores. I think I just won't buy them. Unlike Halo, COD doesn't make them required to have fun. Bungie sure screwed me over with all those required map packs...

@wolvklaw: I agree with you. I think the maps and features that will launch with the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 will really play a big role in the sales of the game. Ever since Channel G4 revealed this fact they have also been convinced it would cause sales of the Xbox 360 version to skyrocket past the competition even more than in previous years.

If they can talk about it a month and a half before the game actually releases, why can't they find the time to just put it on the disc at launch? Oh that's right, because if they strip the game down and then nickel and dime us later for the full experience, they'll make that PROFIT. God damn it, I hate Activision. I'll be especially upset if these maps are as lame as the CoD4 map pack.. I deleted it after a while because I got tired of playing those maps repeatedly in Matchmaking.. it didn't help that they're just simply mundane.

Thank God they are FINALLY talking about releasing a new map pack for a game which has yet to be released! I was getting so bored thinking about what the core map pack is going to be like that I was simply DYING to think about an EVEN NEWER map pack BEFORE IT eventually came out. Could they please hurry up and announce FUTURE map packs beyond this future map pack so I can start thinking about things like how boss MW 3 (and it's future map pack) is going to be?

Got to love how games want to squeeze you for extra cash when it's got a large online following. It's huge profit for them to charge $10 for a couple maps knowing everyone who's into the game is essentially 'made' to buy it to keep up with everyone else. Next thing you know, you're spent the price of the game itself again on DLC packs, and for only a few dinky maps. It's bad value for the average gamer in terms of what's actually given, vs. replayability in my opinion.

@punkdsk8erdude Man i couldn't agree with you more. its so freaking stupid to create a DLC and make you pay 5 or 10 bucks extra for some maps to have added to your hard drive instead of having it included in the price on the disc. Pretty soon it seems you're gonna have to pay to be even able to play the game. Possibly they might even purposely have bugs in the game so that you would have to pay for the patch to fix it. Companies are just trying so many ways to suck every little bit of money out of your pockets. Well its not gonna work on me ill tell you that.

OK heres the deal. DLC is a WONDERFUL invention that allows a publisher or developer to add on to an already finished product after its release. After they finish the game, get some fan feedback, maybe think of more ideas on there own and say "darn we should've put that in the game, let's make some DLC!" Thats a beautiful thing. Especially for games lacking in content, or a great game that you wish never ended. Or perhaps they had the idea already at the original time of development, but it didnt make sense at the time to add it to the game, even if the reason is as silly as not wanting to release the game a month or two later than planned. I know fans get pissed when a game is delayed, but it means they are fixing bugs and sometimes adding more content. I wish they would do that with MW2 instead. If they are planning on releasing DLC - and are open about it BEFORE the game is released anywhere, thats crap. No kidding theyre gonna release a map pack eventually. but to have it already planned out before the game is even released is crap because that means it should be on the disc upon release!! Man this makes me pissed. It's a blunt smack in the face to gamers - hey, maybe we make a great game like MW2, but we're gonna rip you off!! Ugh!
