Modern Warfare 2 map pack due spring 2010

Activision, Monster Energy promotional material confirms add-on for anticipated military shooter will arrive for PS3, 360 next year.

The fuel that will keep Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer running.

Activision Blizzard certainly knows a thing or two about hauling in cash, as evidenced by the publisher's billion-dollar April-June quarter. In a post-earnings call, Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith tipped off investors and analysts as to how it plans to extend Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's sales beyond the game's rapidly approaching November 10 release, saying that the game will get a pair of map packs post-launch.

Today, Activision revealed the time frame for one of those map packs, as part of a giveaway for Modern Warfare 2-branded Monster Energy drinks that will go on sale in October. As part of a set of promotional materials provided to various media outlets, the Monster Energy packaging notes that 5,000 winners will be offered a free Modern Warfare 2 map pack, which has a "planned release" in spring 2010.

Activision declined to offer more information on the giveaway and would not comment on whether the spring 2010 map pack would be the first available for Modern Warfare 2. The Monster Energy prize opportunity also includes 100 copies of the game and 10,000 Modern Warfare 2 dashboard themes for the Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as a free can of Monster Energy drink.

Not even drinks are immune to the Modern Warfare 2 hype juggernaut.
Not even drinks are immune to the Modern Warfare 2 hype juggernaut.

The publisher has already enjoyed significant success with downloadable map packs for Call of Duty. In July, Activision said that the first two map packs for its most recent installment in the franchise, the 11-million-unit-selling World at War, have achieved combined sales of 4 million units. A third World at War map pack went on sale in August.

This is the direction of DLC I hate seeing. DLC was supposed to be the console's equivalent of patches to gain additional content after a while the game has been released. DLC planned and made before the game is released? Sad to see things like this. It's so easy for companies to stick to deadlines now, since if your running out of time, just wrap up the stuff that's done and sell it to the market and finish the rest and sell it again for additional income. There's not much pressure to give a complete game anymore. Sad, sad state of affairs. :/

After reading some articles about the CEO of Activision himself I've got to believe this guy only thinks of money. People aren't wrong for giving him the giving him the benefit of the doubt but from what I've seen he doesn't deserve it. He's talked of using fear as a way to motivate people, fear of losing their job at the drop of a dime. He's talked of "taking the fun out of making games" by taking everything and turning it corporate, this whole plan that he's got with Monster screams it. It's possible that they honestly don't have the time or money to add the maps in now, but taking all the facts and putting them together, it's very unlikely.

I won't be buying this till it comes down in price, and I definitely won't be buying the map packs. I was stupid enough to buy the packs for CoD:WaW and they're rubbish. @Proetorian to call people retards for not wanting to be ripped off is in its self, a bit retarded. Yes we all know money is the bottom line but guess what, its our money, so excuse me for wanting to express my opinion on the subject.

This is why i hate the whole DLC thing, why the hell don't we get it for free after paying big money for the game? Lining it up before the actual game is even out is scandalous!! S'all about the money!!!

@ SlayerX13 Well,, Forza 3 is also doing a rippoff, they already created the ferrari but they are going to sell it as a DLC, why not just putting him in the retail version? It is clearly that it is to get more money. This one, well... Maybe they already have the maps but they say that they are going to sell it at spring just to seem like they dont have it yet and that it is a fair use of DLC. idk lol

@ generaltom The multiplayer has been rebuilt from the ground up and has been improved on quiet a bit. Every sequel is like the title before it. That's why it's a sequel. @ ShootingPwnage Map Packs aren't rippoff if they are developed after the game is released. It is a ripoff when you purchase a 140kb key from the marketplace that unlocks content that is on the disk.

Who cares about the map packs right now the game hasn't even come out yet and Activision wants to start talking about map pack promotions I guess it all comes down to money in the end though.

The Modern Warfare games are just variations of previous games... re-skinned and with different guns that essentially serve the same functions. I don't think this is any different. Yes, they are a very greedy company but people shouldn't buy the DLC nor should they pay $65 for the game in droves for essentially the same game as Modern Warfare 1.

You know what... I wouldn't even have a problem with this if it were at all likely that the DLC would actually be worth the price. But the odds are, just like COD4's DLC, it won't be worth a dollar (not that they were bad maps). ""

Way to kill the suspense, Acti... because we gamers just love to be strung along with overpriced breadcrumbs of content i.e. Street Fighter IV. I do appreciate Monster Assault though.

Activision sure is looking to make some money off you fools. Don't get me wrong, I'll probably get the game. But to announce maps and the game isn't even release? Why not include the maps in the first place. The game itself is $60 and they are already telling us they want another $10 for more maps.

Map packs are done when the game is out, they just wait till fools get bored of the old ones and spend 10 bucks to kill players around different corners...

Monster assault is the only one worth drinking and even then there are better options when it comes to energy drinks. Why are they only giving away 100 copies of the game? Are they just targeting people that don't think about odds? If you start drinking Monster stay away from the juice. Oh my god the Mixxd crap is disgusting as hell.

Translation: we have extra maps we could include in what's probably going to be a short game when it's released, but we'd rather you pay us extra a couple months later. Unless they're smart enough to make it free for PC since DLC for consoles is basically "chump tax."

After reading the comments, I'm fully convinced that everyone at GameSpot believes that no game should ever actually be released, and should instead be in an eternal development limbo where new features are constantly added and added and added. It'd be great, because not only does the game continually get better and better, but you never have to spend a dime on it, too! If Modern Warfare 2 releases with anything less than three hundred guns and eighty-seven maps, I'll be boycotting it as a total ripoff. Take the time to release finished products you guys, sheesh!

The video game industry is just that - And industry. And industries exist for one reason and that is to make money by providing some kind of product. And as long as people buy it they can deliver it however they want. Don't hate on Activision because they know how to make money, hate on the companies that make horrible games and DON'T know how to make money, they are the ones wasting our time.
