Miyamoto teases new Nintendo character

Mario creator tells investors the coming year could see his first original creation in nearly a decade, says next Pikmin needs to be finished soon.

Nintendo senior managing director Shigeru Miyamoto has created some of the biggest characters in gaming, including Mario, Donkey Kong, and Link. In a Q&A session at Nintendo's general shareholders meeting this week, the designer told investors he is looking to add at least one more name to his considerable resume.

Pikmin debuted on the GameCube in late 2001.
Pikmin debuted on the GameCube in late 2001.

According to a GameSpot translation of Nintendo's transcript of the event, Miyamoto was asked to share details on new projects. He replied that he hasn't had much time to slow down and think about new projects with 3DS development ramping up. However, he has found that deadlines sometimes cause new ideas to "glitter," so conditions might be right at the moment for something new.

"It's been nearly 10 years since the creation of Pikmin," Miyamoto said. "I think this coming year, it's about time a new character be created."

Speaking of Pikmin, Miyamoto also addressed a new installment in that series, something he first acknowledged working on at Nintendo's E3 2008 developer roundtable event. He said that development on the project is proceeding well, but he added he needs to finish it soon. At an E3 2010 roundtable, he reassured reporters it remains in the works.

Pikmin featured a diminutive alien stranded on earth, marshalling the forces of sentient plants to help him repair his spaceship. It was famously inspired by Miyamoto's gardening hobby at the time. Perhaps giving some clue as to his next effort, the developer said at the shareholder's meeting that his current hobby is swimming, and it has him very active working with youth in the community.

Will all of you flamers stop calling lower-tier games "casual" games? To you "hardcorz" saying "casual" is the same as retard Read this about Nintendo: << LINK REMOVED >> Sean Malstom wrote about Nintendo's marketing strategy. It's called Disruption, and keep this in mind; everything that he says here came true at E3. This was written 3 years ago, and everything he has said is coming true. It's a long read, but you Sony and MS fanboys might gain a few brain cells.

New character eh..??? Possibly the next Super Smash Bros. will include him/her. Won't be for awhile though. Smash Bros. games are notorious for delays and having seriously staggered releases. But i love the games anyway.

And ninty hasnt put out a new DK (not counting DK beat thing for gcube) or Kirby game in over a decade. They havent done anything new with Metroid since the gamecube. They didnt do anything new with Mario till SMG, and Zelda, they are trying something very new with Skyward Sword. Notice how M$ and Sony didnt give a s*** abt motion control till they saw how successful nintendo was? Notice how nintendo is the first to step into 3D also? Sony is behind, still requiring glasses lol. Nintendo matters, they pioneered video games, and they still are, believe it or not. LOL@taxanomic and anyone else who thinks Nintendo doesn't matter. Maybe to naives.

@taxonomic It's a little bit sad to me that videogamers would no longer consider first party nintendo titles such as the ones I mentione casual as opposed to hardcore. Just because a game isn't some weird, obscene, repetitive shooter, or some crazy RPG you can log 80+ hours into, doesn't mean its casual. None of the main first party ninty titles are casual. I'm not talking about Mario sport games where its just using their characters for some casual game, or some family game or anything like that, but I'm talking about a true Mario game, a true Zelda game, a true Metroid game. Those games are as "hardcore" as it comes. These are the games that started it all. What's wrong with them maintaining similar structure and gameplay elements? Thats what makes those games what they are. If you changed up the Zelda formula too drastically, it will no longer feel like a Zelda game. But look at SMG2, rather, SMG. That game revolutionized mario games, it took it to a whole different level, and totally changed gameplay, while keeping it familiar and maintaining similar structure to the game. This is why Nintendo is genius. This is why, aside from the assortment of Shelf Titles, Nintendo hasn't been pushing out JUST garbage the past few years. And their First party titles are never bad. You can always expect great things, even if they are familiar. and just as an aside, my wii library right now: Mario Kart Wii SMG LoZ TP SSBB NSMBW

Fanboys are really showing their true colors when they bash Nintendo.....their E3 was the only one I actually gave a damn about. They have the competition depending on THEIR motion control strategy for the life of their consoles. They have enough money to make a console far more superior to Sony's and Microsofts without harming the company. I am looking forward to this new Nintendo character. Though they won't be as popular as the older characters, this is basically the beginning of Nintendo characters for the new generation of gamers to come.

All Nintendo really does is remake their old games and pretend they're new. Never actually bringing something new to the table. Yet the mundanes will continue to follow despite the glaringly obvious scent of cow dung.

I doubt it'll be as popular as the current 2, but hopefully it's something along the line of Samus in terms of maturity and grittyness.

LOL@whoever said Ninty had a bad E3. Their E3 was the only one i really watched... LoZ: SS Metroid other M Kirby Epic Yarn Kid Icarus DK Country Returns 3DS GoldenEye Remake Starfox 64 3D LoZ Ocarina of Time 3D Geeze. This year, if u count SMG2, EVERY big Nintendo name is BACK and better than ever! ALL of them. It's ridiculous. This is what wii've all been waiting for (pun intended). The 3DS is going to be the first handheld I will buy since the GBA. I'm interested in Miyamoto's new character, though Pikmin never interested me. Anyway, looking forward to the next year or two with Nintendo! Gonna be insane. I'm gonna go broke..

Hopefully Miyamoto comes out of his comfort zone with this one... Link, Mario and Donkey Kong ARE memorable, but they're growing stale. Their recent games are quality, but don't hold a candle to yesteryear. Metroid being handed off to third party developers is something other Nintendo franchises need to follow. Give full control of Zelda to Aonuma, seek out other third parties for Star Fox, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc., and keep Mario, Miyamoto.

LOL! First original creation in a decade, that cannot be good. It's actually why my loyalty to Nintendo home consoles ended after N64 (which was epic btw). I still buy the handhelds, they're always awesome. I can't believe they put glasses-less 3D on a handheld now BUT the only thing I don't like with the 3DS is that it's design isn't too new, it would feel like no more than an enhanced product not an entirely new product. 10 bucks says the new character is a metrosexual, I'm not even kidding you.

it would be cool if it was an alien like species rather than one character in a nintendo mmo. Kind of like spore, except more emphasis on your character than a whole planet.

@Daian : How is it not creative to make an Italian Plumber the most well-known character in all of gaming? If you told anybody that had never seen a videogame before that a plumber was the most famous character, they would never believe you. Kids don't say they want to be plumbers when they are young. But you can bet they ALL love to play as one.

Miyamoto's developing a new IP for Nintendo. A new Pikmin is on the way. Combine all of this with everything from E3, and you have absolute proof that good ol' Nintendo completely blows Sony and Microsoft outta the water!! Motion control FTW. Touch screen FTW. Glasses-less 3D FTW. FIRST-PARTY NINTY FRANCHISES FTW!!!!

Miyamoto's creation of new characters is always interesting because of the synthesis of various ideas and innovative gameplay mechanics.Nintendo has done a great turnaround in the minds of many skeptics over the last two years and this year's excellent showing at E3 was a sign of that. So indeed the time is right for the announcement of a new character/franchise.

I am very interested in that when Miyamoto does make a new character, not only is it a new character, but it is a new character that some how leads to new design aesthetics and gameplay differences. Mario is Platformer, Link is in an action adventure series, Pikmin does what it does, so for the his next character I would expect it to do something different then those established characters.

@Daian You may not see the characters as creative and original, but you can't argue the games they have starred in are most definitely creative, original, innovative, and sometimes evolutionary.

He's responsible for much more than Mario, Link, Donkey Kong and Pikmin. Try most of the cast of the SSB series and nearly every successful original Nintendo IP. There's even a wikipedia article detailing every game he created.

If Mr.Miyamoto create characters based on his hobbies does this mean he created Mario while eating mushrooms?? On topic it is good to see something new every once in a while.
