Miyamoto teases new Nintendo character

Mario creator tells investors the coming year could see his first original creation in nearly a decade, says next Pikmin needs to be finished soon.

Nintendo senior managing director Shigeru Miyamoto has created some of the biggest characters in gaming, including Mario, Donkey Kong, and Link. In a Q&A session at Nintendo's general shareholders meeting this week, the designer told investors he is looking to add at least one more name to his considerable resume.

Pikmin debuted on the GameCube in late 2001.
Pikmin debuted on the GameCube in late 2001.

According to a GameSpot translation of Nintendo's transcript of the event, Miyamoto was asked to share details on new projects. He replied that he hasn't had much time to slow down and think about new projects with 3DS development ramping up. However, he has found that deadlines sometimes cause new ideas to "glitter," so conditions might be right at the moment for something new.

"It's been nearly 10 years since the creation of Pikmin," Miyamoto said. "I think this coming year, it's about time a new character be created."

Speaking of Pikmin, Miyamoto also addressed a new installment in that series, something he first acknowledged working on at Nintendo's E3 2008 developer roundtable event. He said that development on the project is proceeding well, but he added he needs to finish it soon. At an E3 2010 roundtable, he reassured reporters it remains in the works.

Pikmin featured a diminutive alien stranded on earth, marshalling the forces of sentient plants to help him repair his spaceship. It was famously inspired by Miyamoto's gardening hobby at the time. Perhaps giving some clue as to his next effort, the developer said at the shareholder's meeting that his current hobby is swimming, and it has him very active working with youth in the community.

@Raykuza All of these sequels introduced NEW gameplay elements, that was the core of my comment. I'm fine with sequels if they spice things up enough to warrant a purchase, bs sequels like Halo, Fable and Gears are getting are what you should really be complaining about IMHO. Nintendo is, and has always been, about innovation... if that means sacryfing a few IPs, so be it P.S. I'd be dang happy if they took Brawl as it is, re-released it on Wii HD and made it like Melee

@Rovelius You only mentioned sequels which is exactly what I'm talking about. I want Nintendo to stop making sequels and make something new, fresh, and original. I mean, how else are we gonna get new Super Smash Bros. characters, right? I've got nothing against those games you mentioned (except Sunshine. I hated that one), but my point is still valid.

@MrPuzzlez THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one that played that awesome game. Jill only got to be an assist trophy in Brawl, but she should have been a full character... instead of Ike.

What's wrong with Drill Dozer's Jill? If they were to push that game a little harder, it would've gotten the respect it deserved. Now it's bound to be one of those games that REALLY needs a sequel, but won't get one...:(

I hope that the new character is a good fighter that can possibly be on SSB4 (If there is an SSB4 anyway.)

@Raykuza Sunshine has FLUDD, Galaxy has walking around stuff, NSMB.Wii has new costumes that drastically improved the sidescroller Mario gameplay, Brawl was an overall very decent game (not what I expected as a big Melee player but whatever). What you said would only apply to Twilight Princess, to be honest... even Skyward Sword shouldn't disappoint on the gameplay side Oh and did I mention Other M?

@DeadnBuried i thought the original sonic was impressive, but the following sequels were just too much of the same to me (though the music in chemical plant zone in sonic 2 is fantastic). I dont see sega as whole having hope...they just arent sega anymore. I think Sega Wow has some promise, and AM2 still does a good job, but overall they are hit or miss. Im just nostalgic for the Dreamcast days when sega had so many top notch studios...and wasnt owned by Sammy.

@Bigbudd0045 Ahh well if you don't have the nostalgic connection then yeah i don't blame you for not caring, I wouldn't either! But sadly the first Genesis Sonic game was one of the first I ever played so I'm praying it's going to be good. Anyway I don't know about Sonic Team, but Sega as a whole DO have hope seeing as it was they who created Valkyria Chronicles, and that still remains one of the best PS3 games out there, quite possibly one of my favourite games of all time.

If they gives us something like what the characters gender is than we can say that character should be in smash bros its depends how popular this new character becomes.

@BabyMario11 Not only tat - Pikmin 3 O.O Two snippits of epic news in a single article. Best of all - no snippits of bad news. That may be a GameSpot record.

I feel this is good news. Nintendo cannot continue to rely purely upon pre-existing franchises. Innovate and revolutionise, not just re-imagine.

It's about time. Nintendo is supposed to be this creative, innovative company, but they have spent a full decade re-releasing games and pumping out sequel after sequel.

@DeadnBuried i dont know about that, but then i never really thought sonic was all it was cracked up to be. Sonic had his time and place, but a lot of it was pure marketing, an animal with 'Tude, i believe is how it was put. I never had a genesis so i only played at friends houses, so i have no nostalgic attachment. I hope sonic 4 is good, but im not holding my breath. Sega isnt even a shadow of their former self (literally, since they were bought by Sammy and Sammy took their name), most of their best designers left years ago. Sega is just a name, like Atari.

@Bigbudd0045 I think they're "trying" to more so than actually doing it. But I don't care, because if they make Sonic The Hedgehog 4 actually good, then it'll be worth the last 10 years of failed attempts.

It's about time. Miyamoto has a knack of creating franchises that endure - Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong - when he creates, it's not something that disappears quickly. Nintendo have been milking their existing franchises for far too long though, and a new franchise might be just what they need to breathe a little fresh air into the rather stale Nintendo name.

I'd also be happy if the new character could speak a complete sentence, anything but mumbling his own name. *Looks back at Mario Kart* *Selects Luigi* Luigi: ahoh! Loooweeeeeygi

So long as he doesn't have a mustache or jumps with one fist in the air, I'm happy. I wish they'd give us something... dark, though. Not a family-oriented character.

@shaddix55: WHAT? Help save his console! Are you been serious or just having a laugh? Look at sales figures mate. The only console that doesn't need saving is the Wii, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are getting crappy additions to achieve what the Wii has. Face it the Wii bosses this generation, and with the new games coming out for it it's set to boss it for the forseeable future.

I almost feel ashamed that I forgot Olimar was his creation... Mario L. Well maybe the new one will be Rimola. (Sigh) but still Im excite for both projects in the headline. I just wish I was used the headaches Mario Galaxy gives me just watching running around a spinning ball.

@fps_d0minat0r Well, it IS surprising when they take pre-existing franchises and reinvent them in some way or another. Take a good hard look at Kirby's recently announced adventure, for example.

@Bigbudd0045 So because every Sonic game for the last 15 years has been bad, it doesn't count as milking the franchise? Please, that's just more proof that they ARE milking it. There's been so many bad Sonic games now and yet they keep making them to drain as much money from it as they can, they've been flogging a dead horse. The future's bright now though, with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on the horizon and Sonic Colours looking surprisingly good.

Sound's like another billion dollar franchise is about to be spawned from the grandaddy of all game developers. Breaking news - stand by for another Wii/DS title that will be bashed for not having enough flying bullets or f-bombs outselling all competition for multiple years and being criticized for it.
