Miyamoto confirms Wii 'demo play'

Nintendo's famed designer tells USA Today that in-game walk-through system will debut this holiday with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Nintendo's strength during this generation of gaming consoles has been its ability to appeal to mass-market audiences by propagating a more intuitive control scheme with the Wii Remote and catering to alternative genres with games like Wii Fit. In January, the publisher tipped its hand on one more way it hopes to open gaming up to the masses, introducing an in-game walk-through system called the "Kind Code" by way of a United States Patent and Trademark filing.

A concept sketch for demo play.
A concept sketch for demo play.

Speaking to USA Today as part of a post-Electronic Entertainment Expo interview, Nintendo's top designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, confirmed that the helper system, tentatively titled "demo play," is indeed on the way and will debut this holiday season with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

"In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready," Miyamoto said of the system through his translator. "And yes, we're looking into this for future games, too."

As detailed in the USPTO filing, the demo play functionality lets players pass through a particularly challenging area of a game or see the conclusion of a lengthy story by surrendering control to prerecorded footage. Gamers would be able to jump into and out of the action when they so desire, which would be facilitated by a scene-selection menu. Nintendo's patent noted that the system was specifically for games that fell into the role-playing, action adventure, and action role-playing genres.

The patent also noted that the saved-game data would be served through a network, making it "unnecessary to include the digest saved-data in the game program" and "possible to reduce a storage capacity necessary for a storage medium."

well now if I get stuck in a game I don't have to go to youtube but really? NSMB? Mario? really? who would need help with that? I personally suck at Metroid so I'd like this for that

I'm hearing a little too much complaining for something that by no means will hurt the video game playing experience. It is optional isn't it? I'd like to recall that some people have previously said that this can only help, now Nintendo is allowed to make games more challenging. Perhaps we won't get such easy Zeldas anymore. I don't know about you guys but TP was too easy for me. With this add on Zelda can be hard, and if casuals need a little help then they can get it without the game being nerfed. Really this either will benefit or it won't. It won't destroy gameplay though because it's completely optional.

Who cares if this is in the games? Does it personally affect you if someone else is not skilled enough to complete a certain portion of the game on their own? Grow up people. It isn't a requirement. It is just something that is put in the game so that people who did spend the $50 can have an opportunity to see the end of the game even if a certain part is too hard for them. They paid for the game and they can play it however they want.

It all depends on how they do things as to if this is a good idea or not. If they use it and keep the challange of Wii games as they are now then it is a bad, yet optional, idea. However, if they use this as a way to increase the challange of games without alienating their main demographic then I can actually see this as being an interesting idea. Bottom line is that it is an option and you're not forced to use it.

AWESOME NOW THE SYSTEM CAN PLAY THE GAME FOR ME! Really Nintendo? what is the point to this? By far the dumbest thing Iv EVER heard! At least let there be a penalty like with Ninja Gaiden or something, if you choose to take the easy way out you got to walk around with a pansy flower for the rest of the game.

why so many ignorants keeps comparing this with the use of a faq or a little google-search to achieve something in a game? One thing is not know what the hell you need to do in a game, and another diferent is don't WANT to play your shinny new game. Why you have to expend 60 bucks in a game to see it playing itself? that people could see the same thing on youtube for free. I know that is an optional feature for people who don't have the skills, BUT the peope which don't have the skills or the patience will never buy any of these games... that's the kind of people who buy all these crappy minigame compilation stuff, and if they needs something like this to play that kind of crap, SHAME ON THEM! and to Roger_Smith... who are more ignorant man? the people who can't play games DON'T buy games anyway, and they aren't stupid enough to get exited with something like: "Come on, buy a brand new WII; i know that you can't play games, i know that you suck even in minesweeper, but check this out: Whit the WII, you will be able to buy any game, even the harder ones, and YOU WILL NOT NEED TO PLAY IT, cause it will play alone... how cool is that?" That Roger_Smith, is plain stupid... even for a casual with no playing skills person... of course your commets are full of wisdom.

I don't get why people are getting worked up about this. "Oh now this is getting too easy!" etc. This is OPTIONAL, and if anything, it allows games to be HARDER, as Nintendo has the ability to create much harder games now without the worry for noobs complaining that they're stuck, as they have this now.

Cool. I mean this can't hurt the games, only help. YOu know how many times my little cousins have called me or bugged me for help at games. Now all I have to tell them is skip the level. I mean it wont take away from the fun..ness of the game. Only add to the number of players that will be able to play it. For those who don't want to use this feature they don't have to. For those who need it, this is really good. Nintendo really pulled a smart move. They're always trying to make games for everyone. Casual or not Nintendo makes great games, and now they're trying to give those great games to everyone. YOu know what i think, i think some hardcore gamers are upset because now everyone can play video games. When 10 years ago it was a select group, but now even there grandma can play. In a grand scheme of things i guess some Hardcore Gamers feel they've lost what has made them different. If that is the case then i understand their anger. But you should be proud as well, because now you can play your games and then you can have your kids, or your little cousins play the same game and share a bond with them over it. So i think Nintendo did a good job with this. Contrary to belief Nintendo is not killing the hardcore gamer, they're making more of them.

Reply to all negative comments: This saves you the time in searching the internet on how to complete a level. Just an example: Did you complete GTA IV 100% all on your own? - my point exactly. If you dont like it, dont use it, but its there.

Lol...Now that I think about it, maybe people will shut up about games like Ghosts & Ghouls being too hard and what not....though, wouldn't it be funny if even this thing couldn't help you beat G&G, Super Contra, and the 2nd Zelda game...that would be priceless

What they ALSO need is a "temptation prevention" mode. An option that let's you start the game with the "demo mode" turned off. And perhaps a certain marker by gamesaves that did NOT use demo mode.

Wow, not even fifteen minutes ago I was talking to my roommate about how easy the majority of games have become nowadays. This "appealing to the masses" nonsense is killing me. 15-20 years ago we would spend countless hours until our thumbs blistered beating games. Whats wrong, are kids today so soft that they can't even handle imaginary problems. Call me old school (age 30) but most games today just aren't challenging enough to create that certain level of frustration needed for a true sense of accomplishment.

This is a bad idea. Player's can eventually get through the level if they actually try and practice it. And the fact that this will be in future games scares me.

Yeah cause that's exactly what I want. I want to watch games get played for me, cause that's what gaming is all about. Games shouldn't be a challenge at all, you should just be able to watch the game play itself and you're done! Sooooo much fun!

Whoa, wait. This plays the game for you? I thought it was just supposed to give the player hints with videos and text info. I think it defeats the purpose of videogames if the game has a feature to complete the game for you.

@Ogelthorpe. Yep, this simple feature destroys gaming alright. You might as well call it quits now. All of those fantastic games at E3 probably won't even come out now after the industry gets a wiff of "demo play." In fact, I just heard that Microsoft and Sony are going to force you to use a similar feature like this in all of there games! It's just too bad that Nintendo intentionally is destroying the very industry they are in. (sarcasm)

There are a few stars in Super Mario Galaxy that are very difficult to get. I felt a bit of accomplishment for having beat them; I like a good challenge and I didn't resort to GameFaqs and I wouldn't use this either. But oh, hey, it's optional? So then what are so many people in this thread crying about? This could only mean that the games are going to get even harder now. That's a good thing. Or does the idea of an ingame, optional cheat system so test your manhood that you felt the need to cry about it on an online gaming website? I didn't realize that these so called hardcore gamers are such babies. Man up, kiddies.

Do all of you really think you're capable of analyzing Nintendo's market? The DS and the Wii have outsold Microsoft's and Sony's counterparts by a good deal this generation. Simply put, Nintendo has made games fun to play for everyone and this fact alone is good for the market as a whole. Even those of you who consider yourselves "hardcore" gamers benefit from that.

@cashkilla_basic Can someone explain how Nintendo has 'crapped on' their loyal fanbase or hardcore gamers? I've jeard this meme repeated ad nauseum on here but have yet to see any logic behind it. Last I checked, the Wii has much better first-party games than the GameCube had, and it's only been a few years. Was there a time when Nintendo was making Call of Duty or God of War games, but sold them to their competitors for a sandwich?

Cuz I betcha both $ony and M$ will have it fully implemented by the time their new consoles are out, if not much before that. More than likely it will come in updates with their Wii knockoff controlls.

MortalKombat147: "Nintendo is becoming more irrelevant as the days go on. Nintendo is now for the people that have no interest in video games." I think you really hit the nail on the head. The largest demographic for videogames, by far, is the young (14-35 year old) male. Nintendo has completely abandoned that demographic to go after everyone else. It's good that they're going after the people that videogames have typically ignored, but they've basically crapped on all their loyal fans and the hardcore gamers, i.e. the people who actually buy games (how many wii owners own 2 or 3 games? Most?).

That's fantastic. To make games even more casual, you can now elect to watch the game LITERALLY play itself for you when the going gets tough. Is this part too hard? Its okay, just give up and let the game do it for you! Take that, parents who are trying to raise kids to believe in themselves and work hard.
