Miyamoto confirms Wii 'demo play'

Nintendo's famed designer tells USA Today that in-game walk-through system will debut this holiday with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Nintendo's strength during this generation of gaming consoles has been its ability to appeal to mass-market audiences by propagating a more intuitive control scheme with the Wii Remote and catering to alternative genres with games like Wii Fit. In January, the publisher tipped its hand on one more way it hopes to open gaming up to the masses, introducing an in-game walk-through system called the "Kind Code" by way of a United States Patent and Trademark filing.

A concept sketch for demo play.
A concept sketch for demo play.

Speaking to USA Today as part of a post-Electronic Entertainment Expo interview, Nintendo's top designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, confirmed that the helper system, tentatively titled "demo play," is indeed on the way and will debut this holiday season with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

"In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready," Miyamoto said of the system through his translator. "And yes, we're looking into this for future games, too."

As detailed in the USPTO filing, the demo play functionality lets players pass through a particularly challenging area of a game or see the conclusion of a lengthy story by surrendering control to prerecorded footage. Gamers would be able to jump into and out of the action when they so desire, which would be facilitated by a scene-selection menu. Nintendo's patent noted that the system was specifically for games that fell into the role-playing, action adventure, and action role-playing genres.

The patent also noted that the saved-game data would be served through a network, making it "unnecessary to include the digest saved-data in the game program" and "possible to reduce a storage capacity necessary for a storage medium."

I agree, misleading title Gamespot...and this is old news anyway. I'm so sick of hearing people whine and complain about virtually anything Nintendo does that does not appeal to them. Last I checked this is an optional feature. Wow, so now your friend can brag to you that he beat a game before you did! That must be such an important thing! Or maybe he'll spoil the ending! Oh no! This is a really cool feature, because people can skip over boring parts of a game or parts that they're stuck at. I don't know why Nintendo should reject a feature that would be really helpful for a good amount of people just because some geeks (honestly, if I get modded for this, mods need to suggest what else I replace 'geek' with. Video game intellectual?) don't like the idea of a soccer mom completing the same game they had such a hard time beating.

@gamerguy845 I'm glad it read a little better this time. You see I do realize that this will benefit many players as well as Nintendo. Right now however there are just too many variables. I don't know if this will see a trend in games becoming more difficult and forcing the more casual player to rely on this, something I doubt any casual player would like to use so often. After all even the more ardent supporter of this idea still wants to play a game as is apparent by their decision to choose this type of media. Or if it may lead to games that have less challenges in an attempt to keep the player from using the demo play system. Perhaps they might even may stay the same as they are now. In the end it comes down to how Nintendo can move more software into more players hands. I cannot say I am surprised by this new feature they will use, especially considering the appeal it should offer to casual players their rapidly burgeoning market. My issue is how this may (or may not) affect the design choices developers will make knowing that the encounter that taught you to use the grappling hook could be skipped over by the player. How do they go forward after that point? Do they carry on and use this skill later on in the game, or do they isolate specific gameplay elements to limit a player "demoplaying" his way through the rest of the game after he encountered a hurdle. Only time will tell what this may mean for the level of interactive challenge all games present now.

How is this going to work for RPG's and other games that are based on player input as compared to a platformer, where the out come is the same if you land in the middle of the block, as opposed to the end.

The problem I have with this is the fact that the option is there. Myself, and many others, would be too tempted too use this feature, even though we don't want to. It's somewhat like an addiction. The other problem is that this will almost definately make its way onto other systems. There's also the fact that my friend is going to 'beat it' and tell me about all of the plot twists of the game's story. And if you don't think there's such thing as a hardcore Nintendo game, try beating Metroid Prime 3 in Hyper difficulty, or get every single ending picture in Metroid Zero Mission. (Hint: They're a lot harder than Halo 3's hardest difficulty) I just cited two Metroid games. Maybe that means something...

Great! I love Nintendo! They made classics such as Mario 64 and OoT 10 years ago therefore everything they will ever do, until the end of time, is automatically brilliant!

Lame. And the big N continues to drop the core audience. Once this casual phase (and that's what it is) ends they're going to be in a world of hurt.

Oh man, the title of this article got my hopes up. I thought it meant we were going to be able to download demos and play them on our Wii. Anyway, this doesn't make too much difference to me, but I guess it's a cool feature for some people, just not me.

Good for people who don't what the heck to do in a Zelda game. I won't use it at all, but it's still a neat feature for a population. All the "hardcore" gamers ragging on this concept can go suck on a lemon.

@All the gamers who say if you can see the ending of a videogame without playing it from start to finish without any effort then what's the point in playing?

Heck if you really wanted you could see just about every ending of every game somewhere on youtube or some site like it RIGHT NOW.

Heck there might even be some here. So what's the point in playing right? The point is to have fun and if I'm not having fun with the game.

I'm playing and a part is too frustrating for me to make it past for whatever reason hardcore or not I'm not going to play any further. I'm going to go to a different game that I can have fun playing.

The point in playing a videogame is to have fun playing it not to develop bloated egos and personas. Some where along the way we've forgotten that.

Nintendo remembers, cut them some slack. At least try it before you deny it. Then if you really hate it then berate it then but don't you think you at least owe yourself the benefit of the experience?

What is wrong with people. The fact that no one is forcing you to use this feature aside... Why are you complaining that this takes the challenge out of a game? No it doesn't. The game is just as challenging. Is there some reason that you absolutely must take the easiest path to beating a game? I see so many posts that sound like people want to be frustrated and play games just for the sake of beating them. Doesn't anyone here play games to have fun? Challenge is part of fun, but it's not everything.

Yo dawg, I heard u like games, but u don't know how to play them. So we made "demo play" so u can let the game play by itself, while u pretend to play them, so u can tell your friends u finished them at the higgest dificulty :D

it doesn't get any more casual than this. for those who would use this feature all i can say is trial and error on your own is much more rewarding than watching a demo show you how. i myself won't use this feature. i guess to each their own.

..... and I will try to NEVER use this... I try not to even use walkthrough online and I have never read or own a guide.... this is just the beyond limits of that.... ....anyway... I guess it do not hurt if those that do not like this just do not use it, good for those that will like it... That said, those that would use this in regulary basis... would you be able to say that you completed X game? .... BTW: :( when I saw this I thought that "demo" availability was coming to Wii

@pwnzord your reply to my statement really clears up what you were trying to say, and for the most part I agree with you. But in the end, this "ability" is strictly optional and shouldn't effect the dedicated gamers

@taddia What do you think this is? You don't have to turn it off, you simply have to not turn it on. It's like a virtual gaming pro that you can have show you how to do something difficult. You need not ever use it.

The main good thing about this is that if I find a frustrating part, I can just see how it's done and then I'll try to emulate it. However, they shouldn't reward players for using this; if I can see the ending just by letting the game play itself, it's not very satisfying. Sure, I don't have to use it; but just HAVING the option there kind of bugs me.

I know people have debated over Nintendo's directions of innovation in the past and whether it encompassed the true spirit of gaming, but this is truly taking gaming and committing a hate crime upon it. Seriously, I hear the collective cries of gaming world moaning in pain at such a development.

So wait what you basicly get is a videogame that plays itself kind of like Will Wright's The Sims and Nintendo's own Mario Party series.

I once fell asleep on that one and Mario Party finished itself. But as for the Sims? When I fell asleep while playing that? They died.

I looked all over the house for them all I saw was an urn and some flies circling them. Whatever happened to free will geesh.

At any rate I'm sure this will be a good idea. I mean its not like every game is going to use it

Even if they did it would not necessarily be that vastly different than the way some games in the recent past to some extent have been made.

Like say Left 4 Dead with its drop in drop out multiplayer. Who knows maybe this could even lead to the development of bots in fpses that never had any programmed for them for the multiplayer...

that could be good or more beatem up games that have bot partners like Final Fight 3. Well maybe not quite like Final Fight 3 I mean mine died pretty frequently but hey maybe they could live...

uhm.. this program has some potential, but ofc it has to be a choiche that players can select, not something totally integrated inside the gameplay.. if i want to complete a game on my own, in example, i want to be permitted to deactivate this option.

@Gamingcucumber Oh, I love a good challenge. There are certain games like Mega Man, Punch-Out, and Zelda, that I play because of the challenge. But if the challenge gets to the point where I don't enjoy the game anymore, we have a problem. People, also remember, this is an OPTION. You don't have to use it if you don't want to! Geez...

I think this is a really great idea, personally. I can't tell you how many games I've quit playing because I've gotten stuck at a certain part and can't get past it. On the flip-side, this can be a great bridge between casual and hardcore games. For example, they could make the next Zelda game really challenging, but with this new patent the casual gamer wouldn't feel lost. We'll have to wait and see if it really works, but I'm on board for it for the time being.

Well I can't judge this till it's actually out. But first impression is very disappointed in Nintendo. I hope this will have restrictions on what exactly can or can't be done for you. I really would hate spending hours to try to get something insane done and then having a 7 year old do the same thing by having the computer do it for them.

though kind of a bad idea think back and everyone can admit to a time when a game got so hard they put it down and stopped playing it. main reason why i never finished many of the rpgs i put so many hours into. and some people just aren't that good at games. this helps to keep people from getting frustrated. and remember nintendo quit catering to the hardcore gamers a long time ago.
