Miyamoto confirms Wii 'demo play'

Nintendo's famed designer tells USA Today that in-game walk-through system will debut this holiday with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Nintendo's strength during this generation of gaming consoles has been its ability to appeal to mass-market audiences by propagating a more intuitive control scheme with the Wii Remote and catering to alternative genres with games like Wii Fit. In January, the publisher tipped its hand on one more way it hopes to open gaming up to the masses, introducing an in-game walk-through system called the "Kind Code" by way of a United States Patent and Trademark filing.

A concept sketch for demo play.
A concept sketch for demo play.

Speaking to USA Today as part of a post-Electronic Entertainment Expo interview, Nintendo's top designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, confirmed that the helper system, tentatively titled "demo play," is indeed on the way and will debut this holiday season with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

"In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready," Miyamoto said of the system through his translator. "And yes, we're looking into this for future games, too."

As detailed in the USPTO filing, the demo play functionality lets players pass through a particularly challenging area of a game or see the conclusion of a lengthy story by surrendering control to prerecorded footage. Gamers would be able to jump into and out of the action when they so desire, which would be facilitated by a scene-selection menu. Nintendo's patent noted that the system was specifically for games that fell into the role-playing, action adventure, and action role-playing genres.

The patent also noted that the saved-game data would be served through a network, making it "unnecessary to include the digest saved-data in the game program" and "possible to reduce a storage capacity necessary for a storage medium."

I am laughing at the bunch saying that "this is optional"... Yest it is optional I know that... Tell me one thing.. You are stuck at some point in a game for a 30 mins and on the same note you have something that can easily inform you what to do next.. I wonder how many will choose to spend another 30mins trying to cross that without any aid.. Just saying this is optional and now games can be made more tough doesn't make you a hardcore gamer.. please let the games the way they are.. I mean how difficult it is to reach for your computer and search on gamefaqs or something if you are facing too much trouble with the game..

When are we going to get actual demos? I believe that is the question everyone is actually wanting an answer to. Most people who will use probably won't even hear about it until the day they play it anyway.

Wow, that's stupid. If you can just watch someone play the game, why play it in the first place? I thought games like the new Alone in the Dark & the new Prince of Persia was a critical blow to gaming, but it seems Nintendo has that bragging right now.

You know what... this is kind of a good idea. Theres always a particular game thats tougher to some people than to others. Maybe you just dont have the time to get better at a game and you just want to "see" it to the end... specially when the final stages of the game become overwhelming for someone that didnt get constant play. I know that Ive been in situations where I play a game half way, then have to stop for months and when I return to it Im just too clumsy to finish it. This kind of thing is good. Its optional and it could enhance the gaming experience for some people, even "hard core" gamers.

wait a sec, it says specifically for role-playing, action adventure, and action role-playing. does this mean there's some good role playing games in store for the wii? That would be nice. and action-roleplaying, even though midway's pretty much tanked gauntlet on the wii or maybe even baldur's gate:DA3 would be awesome

God people, it's not for us, it's for the casuals as the "transistional element' between the hardcore and casual games instead of a sharp divide. It's not like anyone's making you use it. Grow up.

I agree with gamerguy845, since when was gaming more about ridiculous challenges or spending hours to get by a certain point in a game? Gaming is about fun, I think people have lost sight of that during this generation. --------- You didn't get into gaming during the NES/SNES games did you. The NES games were notorius for their difficulty leveling. Even if it was "implied" difficult because all you had to do was memorize a pattern, it was still stupidly hard in some games. Those games were what go a lot of people hooked. You couldn't play through a game in a weekend and be done with it. Games nowadays are designed to tell a story and the player goes from point A to point B. Hardly any games have any real level of difficulty.

If anything this is better for gamers. Games can be made harder now, and the casuals can just use this demo play feature to get passed all the hard parts we want in games.

This must be the dumbest ideia ever! I mean if you buy a game you want to play it right? You don´t buy a game to watch bots play level because you couldn´t... (That´s why people have invented walktroughs)

you guys do know you don't need to use this right. and it's nothing more than a walkthrough foe those who need it. and as i said before i'm never going use it but it's still a good idea. theres no point in getting pissed off at something you're not going to use. and it doesn't matter if or how the person playing the game beats its. all that matters is that the gamer has fun while doing so.

@pwnzord while this concept may not be necessary for Super Mario Bros. It's still a good idea. What you're saying is " devote all you're time to games so you won't suck at them" which for the average gamer doesn't sound appealing. I couldn't beat Super Mario Sunshine, so I left it there for 2 years before I finally spent hours beating a particular level, which wasn't fun.

As some people on this site have discussed, and as I've agreed with this game: The idea is dumb. What's the point of a game if you aren't actually playing the game? hart704 said it best, if you're going to use demo play, just rent a DVD and save some money.

What about difficulty levels? I always thought they were the way for less skilled people to beat a game. Anyone needing this kind of help to beat a Wii game should drop gaming completely. The whole purpose of games is to make players overcome challenges. This is completely stupid. It's optional, of course, but anyone using it can't consider himself/herself a gamer.

Uh for Super Mario Bros.? Yeah let me tell you it looks like there are going to be many hard moments in that game. If the game is too tough don't play it. You obviously suck, you should move on to something else or practice more and more. Don't get me wrong video games are entertainment, but at the heart of gaming is overcoming the challenges they present to you, because you are better. This takes out one of the best features that this genre happens to offer. If you don't want any participation just go watch a movie. And yes I know it is optional, but what it represents and what it will be used for is more of a detriment to the Nintendo Wii than it is an issue of being something the player can choose to use or won't. They don't have that option now, and if they want to beat it, they get better. Having the game do it for you is just baffling. But that's the new audience that Nintendo is catering to, those who don't know a thing about gaming and want to get through the astonishingly difficult task of running to the right.

Whitetiger- If I'm can't get past a certain part in a game, I know I need to try harder or get better before I can. If you quit playing a game because you suck at it, thats your loss. They could use the development time used to create this for something useful.

This is ridiculous. Now any idiot is going to pick up games, get to a challenging part and try it for a total of 5 minutes, then cheat past it. They're going to say "Oh I beat _____!" when they went through the most difficult parts with this, while most people are still trying to do it right. I understand games are supposed to be fun, but what happened to skill? Gamers are supposed to face challenges they can't get through.

Alot of you are misunderstanding what this is all about. This is NOT about just having the game play itself. It's about helping people who can't beat a level or are getting so fustrated they dont even wanna play the game anymore.

I remember someone asking, "What's next? Do you want the game to play itself for you, too?" in response to people supporting fast travel and quest arrows in Oblivion/Fallout 3. Well, that has now been fulfilled. So, when will there be some machine to do our jobs for us? :p

this is a very silly idea. The reason I play video games is to first handedly experience something not possible in movies or books. Why would I want to sacrifice my ability to control the character? Kids these days don't wanna try if something is "too hard". There goes any sense of accomplishment after the game beats itself.

This is a GREAT idea especially when cheat codes are less helpful then they used to be. There's been alot of games that fustrated the hell out of me to where I just had to shut off the damn game. Gotta give props to Nintendo on this one! Good job!!

Nice, now games come with a built in Walkthrough so now any idiot can have the game play itself. I actually find this offensive to my intelligence, Nintendo is pretty much saying "Well, people are stupid so we must tell them how to play the game!" Way to go Nintendo, way to go... I'm a Nintendo supporter but this is silly.

The heck with cheat-codes and walk-throughs, just have the game play itself..."if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready". This feature should, at least be locked out untill you've attempted x-number of times. (Too bad it wasn't available for Halo on Legendary).

It used to be (before the web) you just tried and tried forever until you figured out the game and how to beat a section. Now you can look up a walkthrough online to help you quickly figure it out. And I guess with this, you don't even have to do that, you can just say, "Hey CPU, beat this part for me"?
