Mirror's Edge 2 'not abandoned' - Report

EA Games senior vice president Patrick Soderlund says DICE is "working on something" to follow up well-received free running original.

In 2009, it was revealed that the Mirror's Edge franchise would continue past the well-received, but less-than-stellar selling original. However, earlier this year, developer DICE offered a bit of bad news for franchise fans, saying development of Mirror's Edge 2 was "stalled."

It'll be a while before Faith gets to run around again.
It'll be a while before Faith gets to run around again.

Now, EA Games is waffling again about the parkour-inspired first-person franchise, telling GameStar that the Mirror's Edge series has not fallen by the wayside.

"We have not abandoned the franchise," said EA Games senior vice president Patrick Soderlund. "We're working on something, but I'm not willing to talk about that."

Stockholm-based DICE is currently creating Battlefield 3 for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this October. It will be the first entry in the core series since Battlefield 2 was released exclusively on the PC in 2005.

Would love to see a Mirror's Edge sequel... in the meantime, though, I would settle for EA putting the time trial server back online. Having to disconnect my 360 from Live so I can play DLC is kinda lame.

I really loved Mirror's Edge. If they're making a sequel, a map editor (think Halo Forge mode) would be awesome, open world (like Assassin's Creed), a longer campaign and better multiplayer.

We don't need "something", we need a full-blown sequel to the beautiful game.

@zaiwen allright, we could argue all day about this, without getting anywhere, so let's just say that you have your opinion, and the rest of us have our opinion. that will be the easiest way to settle this, don't ya think?

@Gulle0612 whoever said that graphics was everything? u claim i didn't follow the story.. yet you obviously didn't even understand why i even mentioned that graphical wise, it'll even surpass the 1st game.. the gameplay sure is a bit decent but that isn't even the argument here.. the fact remains the 1st same didn't sell well so its no surprise the next project was stalled.. hell, why even bother risking investing in development costs if you have doubts it'll sell even more than its predecessor, when there are tons of games that are far worth investing on in EAs portfolio. which leads me to my opinion no wonder EA declares losses because of the simple fact that games like this didn't sell well

@zaiwen okay first off all, life is all about taking chances. imagine how boring life would be if we didn't take chances? if we always played it safe. but no, EA has the guts to say "okay, the first game wasn't the biggest seller on the market" (which i'm not sure off, since i don't follow the game news that much) "but what the hell. let's pull ourself together and make a new helluva game!" and the game was awesome. you mentioned graphics. let's take a great example: World Of Warcraft. now it would be a lie to say that the graphics were as good as the witcher 2, uncharted 2 or something like that, but it is the best selling game in the world (i think). so graphics isn't everything pal. and the gameplay in mirrors edge were amazing. felling the rush when you ran across rooftops. and the great felling when you pulled off some nice combos or acrobatic moves. that's awesome! and the story wasn't bad at all. you probably didn't follow the story. a city, where you were hunted, living hidden in the underground with a secret organization. running from the police on the rooftops. that's an awesome story. so what is the problem man? if you have anything to add, plz reply.

no wonder EA always declares losses at the end of their fiscal year.. its cause of games like this.. pathetic.. u might as well sell for under $30 so MAYBE just maybe it'll sell more than its predecessor so most kids can afford the game this time & convert it to an actual sale

"working on something" better mean on MIRRORS EDGE 2, not Mirrors edge multiplayer or DLC or any crappy thing like that!

Give the game a map editor and co-op; then it should sell much better.

I thought the first mirrors edge was enjoyable. I think they should have a save anywhere system for the P.C. version. I thought it was bad, always having to repeat the same steps and jumps just get to save spot in the game.

I really liked the first one, even though it was far from perfect. I would love to see a sequel that refines the mechanics of the previous one.

Mirror's Edge looked cool but Battlefield 3 has priorities over Mirror's Edge 2 because Battlefield 3 is going to be big, not as big as we all think but big. Also, their network needs lots of debugging.

I think this was more a problem of Dice being busy with Battlefield 3 than it was dropping Mirror's Edge 2 altogether. Because let's be honest, at this point the Battlefield IP will sell a whole lot more copies than the Mirror's Edge IP. This is a reminder for me to pick up the first game. I played the demo, and always meant to play it. It was slick and fun to play.

I'm honestly shocked that this is happening, although it's a joyous shock. For so long I'd used this game as a perfect example of quality and innovation NOT being rewarded by the industry. If this is a new direction, that is to say not just churning out mainstream games, that EA is taking... maybe there IS hope? So, for those of you who have not yet done so, why not buy a copy of ME and send the signal that you support this move? I can't imagine how excellent a sequel with decent dev-time will be to such a creative game... oh man.

I'd love to see Mirror's Edge 2 with improvements made. I thought the first game could have gone from 'good' to 'great' with a few tweaks, and I still think so.

I bought Mirror's Edge on release and still play it through from time to time. Great play mechanics, thrilling heart pounding action, fantastic music, fun story, and a nice departure from shooting everything in sight. And if you happen to have lived in NY for the past 15 or 20 years the sociopolitical backdrop might hit close to home I always did feel like it could have used a bit more in certain areas but I loved it nonetheless. And hell that's what sequels are for. Thanks for not abandoning this one DICE!

It was quite focused in terms of marketing (including a video of a really good song?) and the reviews it got were good. I have NO idea why more people were not intrigued. I found it depressing even knowing that many would be spending $60 on COD Part 2 than this on a sale for $15.

1st game was heaps of fun and something different, great sense of speed and momentum. Im definitely gettin the 2nd, but if they include a level designer/editor mode, holy crap u have a real winner on ur hands.
