It's the first Minecraft game for a Nintendo platform.

The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games is bringing Minecraft: Story Mode, its upcoming episodic game based on the hugely popular Minecraft series, to Wii U, the developer confirmed on Twitter.

That might seem like a small detail, but it's particularly noteworthy given that no Minecraft game has ever been released on a Nintendo platform before. It's also significant, as it represents the first time the Minecraft franchise is expanding to a new platform following Microsoft's acquisition of the series.

Whether or not this move paves the way for the main Minecraft game to come to Wii U or Nintendo 3DS remains to be seen.

Minecraft: Story Mode is also coming to a long list of other platforms, including Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, Android, and iOS.

Last month during Minecon, Mojang and Telltale Games released the first gameplay trailer and confirmed more details about Minecraft: Story Mode. Among other things, Telltale confirmed some of the game's voice cast, which includes people like Patton Oswalt, Corey Feldman, Billy West, and Paul Reubens.

Xbox maker Microsoft acquired Mojang and the Minecraft franchise in September for $2.5 billion. Following the deal, Minecraft creator and Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson exited the company. With his newfound uber-wealth, he outbid Jay-Z and Beyonce for a $70 million Beverly Hills mansion.
