Minecraft PC sells 13 million copies

The PC version of Mojang's sandbox game reaches new sales milestone.

The PC/Mac version of Minecraft has now sold more than 13 million copies. The game currently sells for $26.95 per copy, but early adopters paid less for the alpha and beta versions, so calculating lifetime revenue is problematic.

This is up from 12 million copies sold in the beginning of September and 11 million copies at the end of June. Writing on Twitter, creator Markus "Notch" Persson said, "The original version of Minecraft has now passed 13 million copies sold. Official statement: whoa."

Minecraft is, of course available on numerous other platforms. The Xbox 360 version has sold more than 8 million copies as of August, while the Pocket Edition passed 10 million copies sold in May.

Microsoft has described Minecraft as a "beast," and will release the game on Xbox One. Minecraft is also coming to the PlayStation 4, though a release date has not been set. Nintendo recently addressed the game's absence from the company's platforms.

Persson recently revealed in a new book about his life why he turned down a job offer from Valve.

This can't be real. I heard countless times PC gaming is dead.

Or dying.

Someone's lying.

"Copies"? Copies of what? And what is the material used for these "copies"?

Copies of itself. They keep the original in the secret vault underneath *CENSORED*, and that one is updated regularly.

Minecraft and League of Legends are PC-defining games. LOL. So much for "higher standards."

Minecraft never appealed to me, unfortunately. Regardless, congrats to Markus for his success!

Congrats to Notch and Mojang. If anything, this game has shown that a lot of unexplored space in the gaming medium isn't due to technical limitations but rather our own limited imagination.

<< LINK REMOVED >> "our own limited imagination" Which is why some people don't like it, because you need to make your own fun :P. The world in Minecraft is our blocky oyster, only the imagination sets the boundaries.

My nieces play the Hell out of the 360 version of Minecraft. I've played the PC version, and intend to buy it in a few weeks.

Some of my favorite indie games have drawn direct influence from Minecraft. 3079 and Eldritch are both 'blocky open-world' rockers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> they're called voxel-based games. Making graphics out of blocks. You should check out cube world. I wasn't a big minecraft fan because i thought it was kinda boring but those other games are cool. Voxels are great for randomly generated worlds like in cube world and 3079.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Heh, you didn't have to wait long for that one, not even a day. It's nice that Minecraft has sold 33 millions, but come again when it's forty or fifty million. We don't need to hear about every single million it's sold.
