Minecraft Now Officially Belongs To Microsoft

Microsoft's $2.5 billion acquisition of Mojang and the Minecraft series has closed.

Microsoft's $2.5 billion deal to buy Swedish developer Mojang and the sandbox series Minecraft has now officially closed, Xbox gaming boss Phil Spencer announced on Twitter today.

After some reports and speculation, Microsoft on September 15 announced plans to buy Mojang and Minecraft in the multibillion dollar deal. Now that the deal has gone through, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson and two other key Mojang developers will leave the studio. Persson, who owned 70 percent of Mojang, stands to make around $1.75 billion from the acquisition.

Writing on Twitter, Persson reflected on moving away from Mojang.

At the time the buyout was announced, Persson said about the deal: "It's not about the money. It's about my sanity." It's unclear what the future holds for Persson or if he'll be involved in game development in any way.

Mojang joins other internal Microsoft game studios such as 343 Industries (Halo), Black Tusk Studios (Gears of War), Lionhead Studios (Fable), and Turn 10 Studios (Forza), among others.

Microsoft has said that it will not remove versions of Minecraft for competing players, including PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. Regarding the future of Minecraft, Spencer said last month that it's too early to talk about a potential Minecraft 2.

At the time, Spencer explained that Microsoft must first "meet the needs" of the existing Minecraft community before the company expands the franchise.

Outside of Minecraft the game, Warner Bros. is currently working on a Minecraft movie. Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy is reportedly a frontrunner to direct the "large-budget" movie, which is in the very early stages of development and might not be released until 2017 or 2018.

Microsoft maintains that the $2.5 billion Minecraft acquisition will be "break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis."

Oh man, I hope this isn't a bad thing. Microsoft's reputation is quite bad in my eyes. I have no idea why, though. I'm even using a Windows right now! Hail Minecraft, by the way.

What, does Minecraft have microtransactions or something? I don't see what makes it worth buying.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You'll have to wait for the future to see why. I find it very unlikely MS will leave Mojang and Minecraft the way they are right now. They'll impose changes to pad their bottom line for sure. Just wait.

And the rich get richer. I personally don't see the big appeal of Minecraft, but 2.5 billion wasn't much to pay for such a huge property.

Minecraft is like Justin beiber for me. I will never understand its popularity and what contact I have had with it I don't enjoy. Maybe I'm missing something but I'm curious to see what Microsoft does to expand on a game about stacking blocks.

probably the same way that Sony owns a large portion of Blu Ray tech that is in Xbox One machine. a portion of Minecraft profits for being sold on Sonys network, goes to Sony. so i dont know what you mean by your statement. you do realize that companies dont give all profits to developers, a portion of profit goes to the service that that company provides in selling it in their own store/network. its the same with microsoft or any company. lol!

if you look gamestop. they buy the games at merchant prices which are way lower than customer prices & sell the games for higher amounts of money. that is how every company makes profit. they dont let businesses sell their products for free at their store & acquire only the cash from the items that are sold exclusively from their own brands. otherwise all business would not survive.

ok let me summarize for you M$:

1- thats 2.5 billion you will never see again

2-you can milk this game for all its worth but you wont get my money unless its something truly fun and worth it (see witcher 3 for examples)

3-I know the updates will stop now, M$ aint a charity that we all know, although NOTCH the B-UTT face promised he will update the game when we gave him that cash back in beta.

They'll make more annually off of Minecraft than they would have earned in interest from leaving the $2.5B in the bank. That's how you make your cash work for you. If you can't see MS recouping their investment you should probably take some financial classes before managing your own money.

Love reading the comments of Microsoft fanboys, all of them here seemingly 13 year old boys who haven't discovered girls and have grandiose dreams of making minimum wage at a Minecraft theme park.

@lilant135 Eventually, the video game industry will crash and burn so not jealous. Maybe you will discover girls or cars instead of playing video games and talking to boys all day.

Holy crap, the guy who made this game has cashed out at godlike proportions. He made one game and now he can spend the rest of his life on a beach if that is what he wants to do. We should all be so lucky.
