Minecraft Movie Lands It's Always Sunny's Rob McElhenney as Director

The Minecraft movie from Mojang and Warner Bros. finally has a new director.

After parting ways with Night at the Museum's Shawn Levy, Mojang on Tuesday announced that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Rob McElhenney will helm the upcoming film.

Late last year, former director Levy revealed that his vision for a Minecraft movie was going to be a Goonies-style adventure. However, Mojang vetoed this idea and Levy exited the project.

McElhenney does not have a lot of professional directing experience. According to his IMDb page, he directed three episodes of It's Always Sunny (he was also the show's executive producer) and is also helming the new FX comedy Pariah.

Mojang didn't share any further details about why McElhenney was the right fit for the movie or reveal any plot details. Last year, Mojang described the movie--which will be produced by The Departed's Roy Lee--as "large-budget," noting that it may not arrive until 2018.

McElhenney and Mojang's Vu Bui joked that the movie will be equal parts strange and wonderful.
