Mojang has been in the news quite a bit recently due to Microsoft's $2.5 billion acquisition of the company, giving it control of Minecraft. But despite being so closely associated with the phenomenally successful sandbox game, it's not the company's only project--it also has collectable card game Scrolls, which it will soon cut the price of from $21 all the way down to $5.
As explained by its developers in a new blog post, this move is being made as Mojang prepares to release the game on tablets (both iOS and Android). Scrolls has been available in beta on computers since last year, but with phone and tablet games typically being priced much lower than those on other platforms, Mojang said its current price "isn't feasible."
"Cross-platform play is extremely important to us, so creating separate communities for tablets and PC/Mac was out of the question," Mojang explained. "We're also determined to maintain a one-off cost for Scrolls and not pressure our players into spending extra cash in order to be competitive, or to have a good time in both the early and late game."
Mojang considered free-to-play--a model used by many card games, including the wildly successful Hearthstone--but decided it isn't "keen on the way that that form of monetization can affect gameplay."
That's when it arrived at the decision to price the tablet version at $5, and to drop the existing PC/Mac version's price to that same $5. That's a $16 drop from what it's currently priced at, so if you're considering picking it up anytime soon, you may want to consider waiting until the tablet version's release sometime "very soon." However, those who have bought the computer version at full price aren't being forgotten, as they will receive a $20 shard pack for free.
Once the tablet version is released, players will be able to face off against one another no matter what platform they're on.
Although it's not the only game outside of Minecraft that Mojang has ever worked on--there was canceled space game 0x10c, among others--Scrolls is the only other game it ever developed and then sold to the public. Its fate was unclear following the Microsoft acquisition, but it would appear that development is continuing, at least for the time being.
