Minecraft Console Sales Pass PC, Series Nears 54 Million Copies Sold

Mojang releases new sales statistics for popular open-ended sandbox game.

Mojang's Patrick Geuder Saga, who heads up data analysis at the Minecraft studio, announced some new statistics about the popular sandbox game today on Twitter.

"Minecraft console editions together just passed Minecraft for PC/Mac," he said. "And across all platforms, we've sold almost 54 million copies."

On console, Minecraft is currently available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and versions of the game are coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita later this summer. There's still no word on if Minecraft is ever going to come to Nintendo platforms like the Wii, Wii U, or 3DS.

Mojang did not share details regarding how the 54 million figure breaks down between platforms. Minecraft is available on a multitude of systems, including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC/Mac, iOS, Android, and Raspberry Pi. The Xbox 360 version alone has sold more than 12 million copies.

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson recently spent more than $40,000 to buy an extremely rare copy of an unreleased Aphex Twin vinyl LP. It comes during prosperous times for Mojang, as the studio made a whopping $326 million last year.

A Minecraft movie is also in the works at Warner Bros. The Lego Movie producer Roy Lee is attached to the project to produce it, though there's no other details available about the film just yet.

Well add those two together, subtract from 54....

Where are all the Pc master race now? Quite it seems.

Avatar image for jerusaelem

<< LINK REMOVED >> "Quitely" playing their pirated copies of Minecraft with about 10,000 mods and texture packs that the millions and millions of console players cannot and will not ever have access to?

Avatar image for jellyman68

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don't know anyone who pirated Minecraft on the PC. I think the Minecraft buzz left the PC community a long time ago as we had the game a lot earlier and with way more features, but the console versions are only just starting to catch up with the PC version and the community response seems to reflect that.

Console is where the money is now

When PC game like Crysis, Eldee Scroll, Battlefiled, etc sold much higher on it u knew where the biggest $ is not to mention the big budget games exclusives on console which is highly anticipated

Avatar image for bloodytides

<< LINK REMOVED >> lol Crysis 2 only sold 3 million on all platforms and please Crysis 3 sold even way less while the original Crisis on PC sold over 3 million.

and this is why more video game companys support consoles more than PC

Avatar image for xdude85

People are still buying this?

Avatar image for Richmaester6907

<< LINK REMOVED >> Considering over 80million people own a 360 and a PS3 this game could go on to break 100million sales within a few years easily. Plus the PC players and the new versions coming out. This game is like a fucking gold mine, literally.

Avatar image for KimCheeWarriorX

@vadagar1 heh. well said my friend. when i play games on either console or pc, i look at it the same way, its a game and im playing it and im having fun with it. period.

Avatar image for steaminpotatoes

That's like saying PC and Xbox sales have surpassed PS3 minecraft sales, can't just add several platforms together to swing stats in your favour, doesn't make sense, there's a word of this i think it's called Bulls**t

Yeah which console though, couldn't care less.

I bought it on 360 to try it. It is addictive but I don't know how people can pour as much time into it as they do.

It is like I finish after an hour or two and feel like I've accomplished absolutely nothing with my time. At least in other games there is some sense of progress and accomplishment.

Yep, I played it and didn't understand the point. Is there a goal or do you just chop blocks for hours? Seems to me if you are only building a world that Project Spark would have more to offer... and its only beta right now.

Avatar image for jerusaelem

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Explaining "the point" of Minecraft makes about as much sense as attempting to explain a good joke. You either get it or you don't. It's honestly as simple as that. The only "goals" involved are ones that you bring to the table yourself. If you're not willing to invest that much thought in the process, the boredom that followed should come as no surprise.

Wouldn't expect much more from Project Spark for the very same reasons.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@rolla020980 Yeah I know what you mean. Project Spark you can at least give something fun to someone else, like a fun game or something. Normally all I have to offer from my efforts in Minecraft is a massive hole and a lopsided cabin.

Avatar image for emerin76

PC gamers don't like to buy games.

Avatar image for emerin76

dont get insulted, just kidding around...just taking a poke at the pirates which I'm sure are the minority...except amongst my friends...they're all upper middle management and STILL buy the $5 rip off games at the market..

Enjoy your day. it's too early(6.30am) to have a tiff over something so bloody trivial. lighen up

Avatar image for deactivated-5b19214ec908b

<< LINK REMOVED >> How is 10 million not a lot? Especially for an indie game that never paid a penny for advertisement.

Avatar image for deadline-zero0

@emerin76 So that's why there more than 10 million in sales on PC
