Now Playing: Video Review - Minecraft

Nintendo has announced that Microsoft's Minecraft will launch digitally for Nintendo Switch on May 11, with a physical release coming "at a later date." The Japanese publisher confirmed the news in its most recent Direct stream, in which Splatoon 2 and Arms also got release dates of July 21 and June 16, respectively.

Nintendo also confirmed that the Switch version will support both online and local multiplayer. Eight players can play together online, while up to four can craft at once on the TV in split-screen or in tabletop mode.

In addition, Minecraft's Super Mario mash-up pack will also come to Switch, allowing you to explore blocky versions of Mushroom Kingdom-themed worlds alongside characters such as Luigi and Waluigi.

This Switch edition is seemingly being handled by 4J Studios, the developer that previously brought Mojang's PC version of Minecraft to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and Wii U. Telltale's narrative-driven adaptation, Minecraft: Story Mode has also been confirmed for Nintendo Switch, meanwhile, though we don't yet know when that is due out.

Microsoft recently revealed that some versions of Minecraft will get a new marketplace where you can buy user-generated skins and maps, among other items. That store isn't coming to Switch, however, as it is limited--for the moment at least--to the PC and mobile editions.

This is a good game for something like the Switch. Great game to jump in and out of while you're on the go.

Its good to see it coming to the console/handheld so soon into its life unlike when it took forever for them to get the finger out and bring it to WiiU. I guess it will be a straight port and there wont be any good use of the touch screen just like the WiiU.

"Coming to Nintendo Switch, for the low, low price of $59.99'.

@e3man01: I think it'll be like Shovel Knight or The Binding of Isaac...

They'll wrap up a bunch of addons and whatnot and sell it for a higher price than they should.

59,99$ looked ironic but I wouldn't be surprised to see it go for as much as 29,99~39,99$.

What I hate is that they sort of take advantage of the fact that the switch being a mobile console is probably the best console to have these titles on so they seem to allow themselves to sell them for an higher price tag.

Problem is, we paid for the console already for that matter.
We shouldn't have to pay more for the games as well...

Shovel Knight/Binding of Isaac should've been 19,99$US / 29,99$ Can.
It would've been more than enough for indie game, no matter how good they are...

@heqteur: Yeah, that was a brutal post. If you can delete, you probably should. Ouch, you make all Nintendo fans look like lunatics. As a Nintendo fan I really don't appreciate it.

Holy, Minecraft Survival Mode on the go is very intriguing! Sounds like a lot of fun. Hopefully they release that 1.09 patch on consoles soon that gives us shields. My son and I have been waiting forever for that patch!

@pork7: So many people still play this game. Calling Minecraft a "fad" is pretty ridiculous.

Minecraft will also be getting its own currency and will be inviting third parties to sell in an embedded marketplace: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-04-10/microsoft-s-minecraft-set-to-launch-its-own-currency

I’m suddenly having flashbacks of the Wii-u, at least as it pertains to “older” titles finally appearing on Nintendo’s latest console.

If Nintendo really wants to give gamers something to get excited over they are going to have to step up their game in the 3rd party department, especially in regards to new/newish (is that even a word, Ninja?) games arriving on their console.

And yes, I know… the Switch hardware might not be able to pull of some of the graphical requirements of most newer 3rd party titles (Might, Ninja?! HA!) but there could be other alternatives (Cue eye rolling now.).

Still, every little success should be commended as an effort on Nintendo’s part at least in regards to them attempting to give their audience more of a variety in their gaming lineup.

Hopefully come E3 they will give gamers all around the world more of a reason to "make the Switch."

What do you mean "finally"? Minecraft was on the Wii U.

@doctor_mg:

True, no one is arguing with you there. I meant in regards to older titles suddenly making the “Switch.”

It goes without saying that Minecraft is an older title (think it came out in 2011, not sure.) and during the Wii-U’s time in the spotlight it was not uncommon for older ports of games to make the jump over to Nintendo’s console (like what is happening again in the present; to be fair though the Switch just came out so…).

Assassin’s Creed 3, Batman Arkham city… the list goes on. Problem was that, as I mentioned before, they weren’t exactly “new” games. While it was nice for gamers to finally get their hands on these titles it really did little to win over new converts into purchasing a Wii-U or to satisfy those looking at newly released 3rd party titles on the PS3 or the Xbox360.

Hopefully Nintendo has learned from their previous outing the importance of STRONG and NEW 3rd party titles. If not, well… then they might be looking at a similar fate.

@videogameninja: Speaking of Wii U, I hope it's not quite like the Wii U version, which didn't bother to use any of the console's touchscreen features

Anyway Minecraft is the new Doom... Must be on all platforms, it's just inevitable
