Minecraft 2 Not Happening Anytime Soon

"I can't promise forever there'll never be a Minecraft 2, but for the foreseeable future there won't be."

After Microsoft bought Mojang and its sandbox super-hit Minecraft last year, some thought we might see Minecraft 2 sooner than later. But Xbox boss Phil Spencer already said he has no immediate plans to push out a sequel, and now Mojang has spoken out to stress Minecraft 2 isn't happening anytime soon.

That's not to say it won't happen sometime down the road, however.

"First of all, there's been no discussions about Minecraft 2 at the moment," Mojang CEO Jonas Martensson told IGN, adding that he expects the first game to be supported through at least 2020. "I can't promise forever there'll never be a Minecraft 2, but for the foreseeable future there won't be."

Microsoft Game Studios general manager Matt Booty added that Microsoft has "never" had a conversation about Minecraft 2 because he sees Minecraft as more of a platform that is continually updated over time.

"The way to think about it is more to do with continual updates and a continual process," Booty said.

So instead of a full-on sequel, Martensson said Mojang's main directive--right now, at least--is to listen to player feedback, support mods, and release the game for as many platforms as possible. Minecraft is already available for PC and most major gaming platforms, but there is one notable exception. The game is nowhere to be found on Nintendo's home console or portable devices.

If Mojang does indeed move forward on a Minecraft sequel, it will be done without creator Markus "Notch" Persson, who left Mojang after Microsoft bought the franchise.

What the heck would be a "Minecraft 2"? Aside from a marketing term? But in a strange way Minecraft Windows 10 Edition IS kind of a "next" Minecraft, because it left Java behind and is now written in a "proper" language = C++.

Btw, I cannot wait for Dwarf Fortress 2! It´s gonna be so much better than Dwarf Fortress, right? Right???!

I remember the days when it was an Alpha; everything was so much simpler. After they introduced potions and enchanting I pretty much cashed out.

Personally what I want most is a variable sea level, alongside unlimited sky/ground. Lakes atop massive mountain ranges, deserts that drop below sea level, massive underground lakes with their own ecosystem, and everything in between.

Is a little surprising because Minecraft is a money maker and can make you a ton of money very easy and right away. Making a part 2 will send every kid in a frenzy buying it left and right.

to me it would seem like the game would never have a sequal but would just keep being upgraded. they are already planning a beta to convert it to C++ instead of java.........you know? just saying.

Speaking purely from a business standpoint, they don't even need a sequel. They can just keep updating the game and if they need money they can get people to pay $5 to upgrade to each new console generation. That combined with console dlc profits and the constant supply of new kids becoming old enough to play could keep Minecraft profitable for as long as it can remain relevant. After all, only a handful of people actually work on the PC version itself. Plus there's all the merchandise and spin off potential. The adventure game and rumored movie are very good examples of a way to continue monetizing the brand without making a Minecraft 2.

I'm sure by 2020 Minecraft will have better graphics for all the people still complaining about them. Probably still just as blocky but with better lighting and aliasing and so on. If they can make the Windows 10 version moddable it could eventually replace the java version and really open up a lot of new potential.

I do imagine they will make a Minecraft 2 someday though. Not because they need to but because it would give them a lot more freedom to rebuild the concept from the ground up. They could even continue supporting Minecraft 1 alongside it if it was different enough.

Because they'd never be able to produce a game on par with the quality and flexibility of the original.

I don't think there needs to be a Minecraft 2. The game doesn't need "better" graphics - they are deliberately what they are and part of the game's charm. And as far as mechanics and features - those have been expanded in so many ways to grow the game and I don't see why tacking a 2 on the end is needed to continue to build the platform.

What is Minecraft 2? Smaller voxels? Better textures that don't have to be modded in?

People create their own fun/content in Minecraft. I can see Microsoft salivating at the prospect of a closed Minecraft(ala consoles) that they can sell DLC for, but good luck getting people giving up the thing that made it so popular to begin with(mods).

Why would we make Minecraft 2 when MS paid us a fucktons of CA$H for the first one? Makes sense to me, just keep updating the previous one for life. Now that's the American dream.

Yeah it wouldn't even make sense for the game to have a sequel. I mean there's no story to change up and as they said, continually updating it is the best way to approach the game as they have been doing.
