Mindhunter Season 3 May Not Happen, And Here's Why

If Netflix's crime drama Mindhunter ever comes back for a third season, it won't be soon. A spokesperson for Netflix confirmed that Mindhunter is on hiatus as director and executive producer David Fincher pursues his other Netflix projects, such as the movie Mank and season 2 of Love, Death and Robots.

The contracts between Netflix and Mindhunter stars Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany (and the rest of the cast) have lapsed, so they are free to seek out other projects.

"David Fincher is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots," a spokesperson for Netflix told Entertainment Weekly. "He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn't fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own."

Mank is Fincher's first film since 2014's Gone Girl, and it's his first-ever movie for Netflix. It follows the story of movie writer Herman J. Mankiewicz as he developed the 1941 movie Citizen Kane. Love, Death and Robots is an animated anthology series that blends genres and styles.

As for Mindhunter, it follows members of the F.B.I's Behavioral Science Unit as they seek to understand the psychological motivations of serial killers. Season 2, which premiered in August 2019, featured a portrayal of Charles Manson by actor Damon Herriman; he also played Manson in the Quentin Tarantino movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
