Millionaire Wants To Hold 100-Person Battle Royale Event On Private Island

What could go wrong.

Inspired by the success of games like PUBG, Fortnite, and Apex Legends, a very rich person is looking to buy an island and bring 100 people to it for a real-life game of battle royale.

IGN spotted a listing on the luxury marketplace Hush Hush from an anonymous person who is looking to hire someone to design an arena for a 100-person battle royale game.

Contestants will compete with Airsoft guns, and shots will be detected by touch-sensitive armour. Under the current plan, competition will take place 12 hours per day over three days until only one person remains. Competitors can camp for the night, while food, camping gear, and all equipment will be provided to contestants.

The untitled contest is still in the early stages of planning, so there is no word on yet on how to sign up or other key particulars like what island will be used or details on the safety measures and rules to be implemented. Whatever the case, the person who gets hired as gamemaker will get £1,500/day for six weeks to create the event. And the last person standing will take home £100,000.

"Battle royale games have become incredibly popular over the last few years ago and our customer is a huge fan who wants to make the game a reality in the safest way possible," Hush Hush founder Aaron Harpin said. "If the championship is a success this year, it's something he wants to make an annual event moving forward, which is very exciting!"

IGN reports that the sponsor of the event is an anonymous millionaire; his identity is unknown.

How takedowns could work with sensitive armor? In paintball you just demand surrender if you catch your adversary off guard.

@santinegrete: They have tech for it, with pellets, the weapon itself detects if you hit the enemy or not, plus you prolly have a visor, it counts your kill count too. And the person who is out is reminded by the tech, if they didn't notice the pellets. Or maybe those weren't even pellets, and just virtual bullets, considering the wind wouldn't make it that accurate for such light projectiles.

Aren't outdoor, supervised / monitored (and of course payed-for) paintball games the exact same principle?

I've been to one such place long ago, during the mid 90s. The areas for the battles themselves (and of course owned by the paintball company) were probably isolated, but the total owned and playble-on land was big enough to accommodate up to 4 teams of around 15 players each if I recall correctly, or it might actually have been more per teams (possibly 20 per). One such 'area' was a two face-to-face forts ("forts" made out of pretty good quality wood but it was visually crude, but functional for taking cover and firing from small holes or openings), similar to capture the flag maps in Unreal Tournament. Another area was plain and simple inside the woods of that private terrain basically. It was pretty big. I think that our final battle (at the "forts") was a combination of the 4 original separate teams then forming just two bigger teams to fight it out with our last balls of paint in our guns (it was possible of course to go buy more at some kiosk). We must have been anywhere between 60 to 80 players for that one last match.

All in all, you had to pay on arrival but you'd spend most of the afternoon there. If I remember some food was given as well for diner time as part of the price (nothing fancy, just some chicken sandwiches and chips + beverages I think, or something like that, similar to something you'd go buy at Subway). I remember going there with my cousin and 2 other friends. It wasn't too expensive (at the time though, today it might be well beyond what it used to be). We had a good amount of fun. Everything was secure and safe from what I remember. We had supervisors and 'arbiters' (security agents I think) monitoring the matches with a clear visually distinguishable outfit and they had medkits with them as well but they were also in authority to remove you from the match if you didn't behave properly or even if you tried to cheat in any way.

Anyway, if anything; it was pretty much similar to what is being described with probably the one big exception of the actual geographical location it might happen to if some Millionaire wants to make it happen on some private island. But otherwise I pretty much experienced it before and the scale wasn't too small either (obviously not as big as an actual island or the maps in the actual Battle Royale games, but as far as "real life" battle royale goes it did the job just fine). On a side note I don't know if those paintball places still exist today or if it's still popular or in a decline, but the one and only time I did experienced it I can say it was definitely fun. I would recommend it as long as the place is owned by professionals and serious people with good equipment, safety rules and guidelines to follow, etc (which was the case where I went to back then).

@rekonym: Think the only difference is the reward, and everyone actually trying their hardest this time. Normally it's just a handful out of dozens who actually try their best.

@rekonym: SC Village in California has been hosting massive paintball games since the 80's. I'm not sure if they've done a battle royale-style match but they've run team matches involving hundreds of players.

Sounds great. Until the Health and Safety w8nkers get involved. It'll probably be banned before it starts.

But hopefully this guy can get it off the ground.

@thomaswmak: Exactly. If it's held in international waters, or some other country's waters where these laws are lax, then there is nothing anyone can do about it.

This sounds like the plot to a horror movie where you get there and find out the "airsoft" guns are actually real guns.

That's a hard pass from me.

That kind of reminds me of that manga/anime "Btooom!" where several people got thrown onto an island and had to fight each other.

@KotomineKirei: Or the Battle Royale manga where they put all the school kids on an island and make them fight to the death, (also, a really great movie with the same name).
