Microsoft's Xbox One games will be $60

Xbox maker confirms its titles will be sold for current-generation standard; other publishers have yet to discuss pricing.

Microsoft's Xbox One games will retail for $60, the same price as Xbox 360 titles, the publisher has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

This pricing will put Xbox One games level with PlayStation 4 titles, as PlayStation executive Jack Tretton said in February that PS4 titles will max out at $60.

Other publishers--like Activision, Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft--have yet to disclose pricing information for their next-generation games.

Industry analyst Michael Pachter in March predicted that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 titles would follow the previous generation in jumping by $10 from $60 to $70.

The Xbox One ($500) and PS4 ($400) launch later this year.

@GSGuy321 Do not forget that a lot of next gen titles will be server-based always-online, like "The Crew" or "Destiny".

So the question of master X1 servers shut down is interesting, but there is another question: the shutdown of each particular game's servers.

For example you buy "The Crew", which is the new Test Drive Unlimited, but with an always-online requirement.

Imagine the game doesn't sell well and Ubisoft shuts down the servers three years after launch.

Here, you're screwed, but even sooner than the phasing out of the X1. You're left with a totally useless $60 disk.

(This reasoning applies to PS4 too as the game is always-online)

Considering that MS is only licensing the games to us, why the fvck do we still have to pay 60 bucks?

@jhcho2 It's not only Microsoft, who, lest we forget, publishes a lot of other software like operating systems and office products.

If you watch closely, almost every pub says those very words. "Licensing", not buying. EA and Ubisoft are the biggest offenders.

Can't remember the last time i licensed a bluray movie. Or a board game. Or many other things we've all brought up numerous times. And certainly not a boxed videogame.

@jhcho2 That's what Major Nelson isn't getting when he says XBL is going to be just like Steam (which I hate for it's DRM), but on Steam you can pick up games for $1! Some new games even list at $30 from time-to-time for a few days. Major Nelson? See the difference? Wanns get your crazy hat out again and channel the ghost of Christmas past... when 360 made some sense?

@jhcho2 because sheep will buy it, they won't abandon their precious Halo and Forza for a better option.

Sheep get slaughtered by the wolf and we all know who the wolf is.

MS is trying to preemptively undercut the competition, but in doing so they're cutting into their profits and putting their developers in a bad way. Wasn't it a big talking point about how MS cared so much about 3rd party publishers? Now they're being forced to lower their prices or look like jerks... just like they're being forced into 10 share and losing 9 new sales just so MS can control the used content. MS just doesn't think anything out. One clusterf@ck after another.

@epicgameresearc They thought people would just blindly buy their consoles because they are addicted to Halo or whatever.

Big mistake imo. Some will still purchase for the exclusives, but those people are followers. Not the type of consumers that can spread the word to convince others to buy.

@GSGuy321 @epicgameresearc If I were a publisher, I'd be running as fast as my feet would carry me away from XBOX ONE. There's just too many anti-developer shenanigans at MS. And you thought they were just anti-consumer? Ha. MS is turning out to be batsh!t crazy.

And. people, especially X360 fans, thought PS+ was a scam.

With PS+, you just pay a single fee per year and you have access to a huge library of games per year. On X1, you pay $60 PER game and yet, you don't own the game.

So let me get this straight in an effort to destroy used game sales, to save up on fees and such for the gaming companies I thought they were going to lower the price of newer games? That was basically the whole outcome. But they are still charging $60.00 for a digitally downloaded, attached to your system game? Yeah right. I am just sticking to my PC from now on, I am done with consoles. No reason for them anymore IMHO. I have a power house of a PC now and it blows away the Xbox One and PS4.

@Nafe If you have a powerhouse PC already, then the choice is absolutely clear for you my friend. Yup.

It would be 6 steps backwards to get a console for you.

For what, a couple of exclusives. Big friggin deal. Every platform has it's own brilliant exclusives. Buying a console for a few exclusives is stupid.

GS, so wait a second... You state that MS is going to charge $60/game and then you stick in Michael Pachter's prediction regarding PS4 games. Hmmmm... I can understand that if all of his predictions this season were correct, but he's batting like less than 250! Not the most reliable analyst to use for a news article this late in the game. That was a weird move on your part.

This is good news, but this isn't going to sway my decision. They seriously need to fix their policies that they have in place now if they plan on getting a sale from me

So, anyone else notice that XBOX ONE articles keep disappearing from the GS news list? And some that can be found by hitting "all" have their comments all messed up where you can't call up older posts? What gives GS? Anway...

XBOX ONE is keeping the status quo with game prices... Ok... *crickets* Hope the publishers like being forced into that.

I'll believe $60 dollars as a price point when the new generation actually hits.

@digishah Steam's sales are great, but I'll get the Witcher games on GoG. Bonus stuff included, no third-party program needed to start before the game starts and just as cheap or cheaper if you wait for the right deal. For all other games there's Steam.

Lets not stop there next Halo game will be played entirely with kinetic. Think of the experience that only Xboxone can provide. Because of Kinetic 2.0 we can keep our eye on you all the time.

Gaming is in serious trouble.

I appreciate all the things that Sony are doing on the disc based side of things (way better option than XB1), but the Publishers still maintain most of the power. The two won't be that much different. There simply is no choice or competition on the consoles. There is only 1 shop in town.

@GSGuy321 If gaming is in serious trouble it has been so for a long time, because I haven't noticed it getting worse, though I only play PC games and mostly old ones due a to backlog. Both consoles share much more similarities than differences, for good or bad. This generation will probably be the same as far as hardware goes.

I see it more as a mutual relationship. The publishers could say "Do this or our games won't be released on your console, giving you less profit", though MS/Sony could reply with the same thing. Games sell consoles, but games can't be played if you don't have a console or other device.

There are a few publisher giants that control many beloved franchises, but either you decide that you want their games more than to hate them or you find some new games. Of course, you shouldn't need to make that kind of decision, it shouldn't be that bad, but that's where we are now.
