Microsoft's Xbox One games will be $60

Xbox maker confirms its titles will be sold for current-generation standard; other publishers have yet to discuss pricing.

Microsoft's Xbox One games will retail for $60, the same price as Xbox 360 titles, the publisher has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

This pricing will put Xbox One games level with PlayStation 4 titles, as PlayStation executive Jack Tretton said in February that PS4 titles will max out at $60.

Other publishers--like Activision, Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft--have yet to disclose pricing information for their next-generation games.

Industry analyst Michael Pachter in March predicted that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 titles would follow the previous generation in jumping by $10 from $60 to $70.

The Xbox One ($500) and PS4 ($400) launch later this year.

@penguino522 Yea, that was overkill. And if you didn't care about being able to run the newest games on high a couple years from now (like the same level as the consoles) then you could spend 700 on a rig and not have to upgrade for a few years. Would you be able to play the new games on high in 2016? Prob not but it would still be on par with what the consoles would be offering at that time..

No joke I spent 3 grand and 1/3 of that, 1320 dollars to be exact, was on graphics power. Sure it's incredibly overkill but I did that to last up to 4 years. But here we have consoles that you pay $500 for a platform that sees improvement without paying extra for over 5 years. Sure I love my enthusiast PC but I see the knowledge in getti a console. Ill stick with the X1

@Slade968 @Mendax2013 @Legend002 because by the time you've spent enough to have a gameworthy PC, you could bought about 3 Xbox Ones.

Don't get me wrong I'm not defending the Xbox, just hate it when PC gamers try to get up on their high horses.

$60 and all games are 100% digital? I am supposed to feel good about this? No way, not with all the restrictions that come with 100% digital. They have to make the prices for games cheaper. You want to DRM control everything, no used games, 24hr check-ins etc then give me some incentive to consider going digital. To top it off there are rarely any discounts on Xbox Live games as is. I won't be getting an Xbone for so many many reasons.

@vectordream To be fair, they are still providing physical media for their games, even if the discs themselves would have little use beyond installing the games. I suppose we'll have to wait to see if this is accepted or not. I honestly didn't think the "map pack" approach to DLC would take off, put the sheer volume of their type that are released for games this gen has proven otherwise.

That's the problem with Microsoft's approach. They want DRM and a digital marketplace but what they fail to take into account is that most of the purchases on iTunes and ipad apps range from a dollar to 12$ mostly. . I don't know anyone that has payed more than 15$ to 20$ for a download. 65$ for a download game!!??? That's NEVER going to happen. I personally will never pay more than 10 to 15$ for a download; and I never have before.

And I wonder how well they sell? I dont know the numbers but they're probably 1/1000th of what a 5$ game sells for.

MS has decided I can buy an XBOX ONE game for $60. Ok, that's what I'd pay for a 360 game. But a 360 game I can trade or sell or share without any restriction. XBOX ONE games I can't do any of that without restrictions. So, I'm paying the same while getting less... while I'm desperately calling MS nightly from my tethered cell for XBOX ONE authentication and searching lists of authorized MS resellers in my geographic area? Wait, make it all stop!?!?!?!

$60 is actually really cheap. Chrono Trigger was for $80 (+inflation). Complete Sims 3 with all the removed content that was in previous games costs few hundred $ and all that season passes and microtransactions crap is even worse. Paying $60 today for a COMPLETE game would be awesome, unfortunately I can't see that happening.

@theend3r lol Metro Last Light is a good example of a uncomplete game, since they took off hard mode and nade that into DLC and charging $5 for it

@freedom01 @theend3r It could be worse, I imported Gundam Unicorn for the PS3 for $55 US and it ended up being a DLC nightmare, you had to buy DLC to even have a complete game.

@Yomigaeru @Hop103 @freedom01 @theend3r I'm more aware of new import console games with a price tag that's under $70 US now, because if it is, it's either a lower priced Asia version (which is the same game anyway without a Cero rating, which is fine) or it has a hitch which means the game will have almost mandatory DLC.

@Hop103 @freedom01 @theend3r $55 is pretty low for an import game. At release, they usually go for twice that amount, unless they're budget priced games. But I get what you're saying. DLC and patches seem to have made a number of developers greedy and lazy.

Despite Sony's DRM policy there is still a lot the Publishers can do to drive the consumer to the digital system. Like offering bonus content, or perhaps recommend transfer to the digital library because the game will run faster/smoother. Who knows. Remains to be seen.

@GSGuy321 Trend started in earnest this past gen. You're right, things are going digital, and the pubs are behind it.

Takes two to tango, though, and there are enough consumers who buy digital copies to make this transition.. possible. Sadly.

Now if I am the pricing executive at M$, I would price newly released Xbone game at $40, with Game on Demand release priced at $30, follow by $20 for games released over a year, and $10 for platinum hit/GoTY games and $5 for any game 2 years old. And I will give previous X360 user free Xbone GoD copies of the game that they 100% on X360. And lastly, I will have many discounts and humble bundles for older titles, so people can experience more games at a lower cost, since now everything is digital/DRMed.

But unfortunately M$ isn't hiring.

Really, they should announce 60$ half game and 110 $ full game including all dlc´s. So buyers can start feeling that they dont want just rip them off.

Without the ability to sell or trade my games (not even at yard sales!), this price point is too high. They're charging the same but giving me less. That doesn't compute.

Do not forget that a lot of next gen titles will be server-based always-online, like "The Crew" or "Destiny".

So the question of master X1 servers shut down is interesting, but there is another question: the shutdown of each particular game's servers.

For example you buy "The Crew", which is the new Test Drive Unlimited, but with an always-online requirement.

Imagine the game doesn't sell well and Ubisoft shuts down the servers three years after launch.

Here, you're screwed, but even sooner than the phasing out of the X1. You're left with a totally useless $60 disk.

(This reasoning applies to PS4 too as the game is always-online)

I won't buy nearly any games if they go to $70. That way to much. Only games I get will be like the skyrim type, that is I can get 300 hours of play out of. I learned last gen that buying the god of war, cod shooters are not worth their weight in gameplay hours. It so crap to pay $60 for a game and then finish 100% in 2 days. Now that's not saying the game was not great to play cause there were plenty of those. But I want replay value

@GinRummy92 Unlike other entertainment products, like movies and music, games have cost the same for a very long time. I remember when I first got into PC gaming in the late 90's and the new PC games cost 499 Swedish kronor. If I now go into a shop they still cost 499 kronor. Console games were always more expensive, so I can't say anything about that or the price change in other countries than Sweden.

@GinRummy92 I don't think anyone wants to pay more for games... especially since games generally seem to be getting shorter, louder, and less fun over time. At the same time, we expected some change in pricing... and MS stating this puts developers/publishers -- especially 3rd party developers/publishers for XBOX ONE -- in a bind financially. That's not particularly a good thing right now.
