Microsoft's Xbox One games will be $60

Xbox maker confirms its titles will be sold for current-generation standard; other publishers have yet to discuss pricing.

Microsoft's Xbox One games will retail for $60, the same price as Xbox 360 titles, the publisher has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

This pricing will put Xbox One games level with PlayStation 4 titles, as PlayStation executive Jack Tretton said in February that PS4 titles will max out at $60.

Other publishers--like Activision, Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft--have yet to disclose pricing information for their next-generation games.

Industry analyst Michael Pachter in March predicted that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 titles would follow the previous generation in jumping by $10 from $60 to $70.

The Xbox One ($500) and PS4 ($400) launch later this year.

$60 and $70 sounds cheap for New Game Releases in Australian Dollars, though I recon it would be around $100+ like @shuffles88 has stated for a reasonable price

This is key to the success of Microsofts online nanny state. If the DRM restrictions allows for Steam type sales on the Digital marketplace then all of this pre-release DRM hoopla will be forgiven. However if the price drops are non-existent and year old games are still $40-$50 online, or worse yet still $60 online, then it will just be business as usual and nothing will be gained.

Personally I think it could go either way. Consoles could start following the Steam model or they could still be selling digital copies at higher prices then local retail stores.

As long as they don't go above $59.99 I will be fine. That's already a good amount of cash for a college kid.

But will the games be any better?

Will the games be better tested eliminating bugs, glitches & errors?

No, it will be the same dribble we get now just paying more money for the sake of a new console...

@Messenger360p That only depends on the developers though, if they test it more, it would have less bugs/glitches, publishers are just assholes and have to push them through every year.

Hang on a minute, they say its going to be the same as todays generation in price, but why, on every website are they £54.99. Surely they should stay the same at £40?

Well well well. I said before. The only positive I could see of these new implements MS have thrusted into the console world, the only thing that could turn it into a small positive would be if they slashed the price of their games, but nope.

PS will match you MS and thing is, when people make that regular mistake of buying a game with no replay value they will be able to receive $40 for it on ebay without jumping through hoops and hurdles.

In all honesty, that's pretty good considering, if you think about the MASSIVE complexity in games these days. The main problem is all the DLC etc, but most games are pretty good value for money.

That said, it's still a very expensive hobby!

@Slagar DLC has become a big problem. Contents that should have been included in the game, is put aside to be released as DLC just to make more money. It's bad enough that some games already costs $60 to own... Electronic Arts, Activision, etc are one of the sleaziest businesses around..

Sadly, until people stop purchasing these things.. these companies will continue to put greed over everything else.

@allever @Slagar Mass Effect 3 multi-play DLC gives players the benefit of not needing to take laxatives. I swear that content give me the shits, with the random aspect of what is received in it's content. Constantly trolled with low level ammo etc. with 1 or 2 (if lucky) weapons or characters that's decent.

Yeah, that's the price I expected for the next gen: $60 for half of a game. The other half you have to buy through lots of DLCs for $10+ each. Sad generation >.<

I used to be so happy when I bought my games (full content), put them in my console and that's all. \o/

Hmmm, here in Oz that equates to $100 each (that's what the preorders seem to be saying). That's a lot of salad to drop on a single game

@ForceSkin Prices in Australia can be as expensive as $118 standard edition for a pre-order title!! But some are also $89 pre-orders.

But we live in the 'Lucky country'. lol Lucky for retailers that is!

@sja28 Why do you support a console that limits what you can do with your game? Seriously, wake the fark up. You can't even sell or rent xbox one games.. and you think that's alright? Take a step back and look at the whole picture.. don't spout nonsense.

It's not people hating Xbox Ones... The Xbox One would of been a good system if it didn't have all this limitation and restrictions.

@allever @sja28 Please don't conform to what everyone else on the internet says. Do your own research; publishers will be able to choose to opt out of the DRM. Therefore, if they say "No, we don't want it.", then that's final there will be no restriction to selling used games back to a retailer.

Limits what you can do with your game? I think not. Look at the concept of sharing one of my games to 10 of my friends through a digital library. That's definitely not limiting. If anything, that's expanding my use of the game so that I can share my games with my friends without physically giving them the disc. Also, that's 10 friends. Imagine how long it would take to play pass the game with 10 different people in different houses. Xbox just made it faster and easier. So much faster that you can do it while still being in your house.

Renting a game would be a possibility if the retailers played around the ownerships of the games. For example allowing you to play the game without installing to you account and then going through a sort of transfer of ownership as you're returning the game. There are lots of flexible business models that could work.

I would say that the Xbox One is quite alright. I understand that it is an inconvenience for some people but I see no reason for others, without internet troubles ,to complain about "limitations and restrictions" I also understand that being in the hateful manner that you are at the moment you aren't open your mind to positives but simply follow the crowd and point out potential negatives. I say potential because people have only made speculations on the possible negative outcomes.

I'm sure many people would appreciate it if you and the rest of the "people hating on the Xbox One" stop being so closed minded about the information being given to you; look at it from different perspectives. Where one person sees limitations, another sees a great way to share games with friends.

@JynxGSpot Don't be so naïve to believe everything Microsoft says. They are spinning the truth. Here is a fact for you: With the current generation of gaming systems Xbox 360 and PS3.. It is possible for publishers to control DRM. They can limit contents by forcing you to buy a key to unlock it. Some of them have already done it. Why would Microsoft out of the goodness of their heart built it in to the system? Then spin it out by claiming it is up to the publishers. They are trying to save their own hides.

You can't do with your games what you want... That's a limitation. You can't sell it, trade it, give it to your friends without having to jump through some hoops. That's a limitation. That's restricting you. You can't rent the games PERIOD. You may believe the BS that you wont pay a fee to buy a used game, etc. But that fee will be added to the total price of the used game. How do you think these retailers are going to make money?

Providing legit reasons why the Xbox One is a disappointment is not being closed minded.

@sja28 You do realize the Xbox One at top pre-order is because it is a day one special edition and the only reason why the Launch Day version of the Playstation 4 is in 11th place is becuase it is no longer available? It's already been confirmed that the Playstation 4 is outselling the Xbox 3 to 2. Try not to celebrate over false information. You just end up looking like the Xbox One conference. Fail.

Sure, Because we all know Amazon counts for worldwide sales and evry1 shops there. Give me a break a lot of countries dont have amazon + xbox one is useless with ip blocking in certain countries as M$ just shot itself in the foot with potential xbox fans worldwide that will be blocked.

Patcher knows crap. FACT! If he proclaims games go up by $5, they'll stay at $60.

And I have YET to see proof, of games costing $60. In England, Xbone games COST £50! ARE YOU ****ING INSANE?! That would mean games in the USA, would cost $80.

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msuk/en_GB/list/ThemeID.30273200/categoryID.64484200

Microsoft's OFFICAL STORE! I'd believe that, over Don Mattrick spouting more PR BS.

This entire article is a lie.

Sony have OFFICIALLY said they're games will cap at their current cost, which is $60/£40. Of which, I have no reason to doubt given such with circumstances at the moment.

@JustArtificial As a general rule, I think you're getting screwed in the UK when it comes to gaming. Consoles and games are priced higher compared to North American prices with the normal currency conversion... Sucks for you to be sure, because games really are $60 here (and if you only wait a few months before you purchase you can easily find deals half that). Cheers!

If $60 is the (non-collectors edition) *ceiling* price then that's not too bad, considering game prices have been creeping up over the last couple of generations.

The 720 people that will buy this console can just wait for a good sale...or set it on fire before then. Their choice. lol

Surely games should be cheaper considering games can no longer be transferred ad hoc ... Even steam has prices ~10 -20% lower, and crazy 50%+ off sales.

@Coolspot18 It mite not be a day one thing. The Devs will need to see how it works. It might be 4 to 8 months, but it will happen once they know games can't be stolen and they will still make money on them.

@DragonKnight109 @Coolspot18 I think it would be kind of cool if Microsoft's first party titles were sold at a 10% or so discount if you pre-order them. I know something of this nature was done when I pre-ordered the HD release of Age of Empires 2 on Steam.

That would be the type of pre-order incentive I'd really enjoy.

So the games will stay at $60 in the US and their going up by £10 in the UK to £55? (just checked Amazon) i'll not be happy if games go up in price in the UK and don't in the US.

I doubt this pricing strategy very highly. Amazon.de is already pricing PS4 games in Germany for 100 Euros!!! I will be shocked to see any games being priced below that for the first 8 months of launch.

But who knows? This is an opportunity for Microsoft to stick it to Sony. If Microsoft can get the pricing right on its games and under cut SOny that will definitely turn the tabels for them seeing as a console is only as good as its games and accessibility to them.
