Microsoft's new two-step verification will work with Xbox 360

Xbox 360 won't be able to directly use Microsoft's new two-step verification, but the publisher will provide a workaround.

Microsoft is enhancing security across its services, including Xbox Live, by enabling optional two-step authentication for Microsoft accounts.

No Caption Provided

Two-step verification uses a mobile phone number or alternate e-mail to supply an additional code when logging into an account.

While the Xbox 360 will not directly support two-step verification, Microsoft will allow users to generate a unique password to access their Microsoft accounts from the console.

Microsoft says its overall objective is to unify many devices together underneath one user account.

The option for two-step verification should go live on users' accounts in the next few days, says Microsoft.

"Two-step verification is a great tool to help protect your account, but it does require you to be careful to keep your account up to date. If your security information changes (phone or alternative email), it’s important to update your Microsoft account before you get rid of the old info," wrote Microsoft's Eric Doerr in a statement.

@Crystall3d

Won what exactly...?

A month long HACKED SERVER competition? Or...

Are you on about the really dull and the constantly stupid, never ending and therefore, forever ongoing...

CONSOLE WARS...

Between the MS and Sony Fanboys?

I am not sure if that is even relevant in a comment section about... the new, two step SECURITY option being applied to the 360 but...

Hey! What the hell! Come on, lets start, yet another Battle, for which lump of plastic gets it's rightful place under the television set? Heh heh.

You can go first... Now... Roll that dice?

(No cheating!) lol

We're not talking 360 & PS3, we're talking about Xbox One & PS4.

What are you talking about?

Nobody was talking about the PS4 nor the Xbox One here!

If we were talking about them, then I should get a job as a Psychic? I sure as hell never knew that MS were calling their Xbox, Xbox One, on the 22nd April?

Did you even read the article or did you just decide I am going to troll someone today?

Microsoft: We'll make new OS i.e. windows

case 2

Sony: new console i.e. Playstation

Microsoft: We'll make new console i.e. X-box

case 3

Google: 2 step security system

Microsoft: (Can't think of anything else).... blindly copy... 2 step verification system

etc

C'mon MS try to be new....I know all u learn in your college is copy/paste system...

@AlcadeiasLOS

case 1:

Windows pre-dates Mac OS X, so I'm not sure what they hell you are talking about.

Also, Mac OS X uses a bunch of code from the free BSD operating system, which came before it. Its hard to say Mac OS X is entirely original

case2:

You're saying nobody else except Sony should make consoles? What is wrong with having more choices?

case3:

2-step security is an industry standard. It's not supposed to be exclusive to a single company.

@AlcadeiasLOS how old are you? 17? your apple zealotness is hilarious. do some research, Apple copied Xerox with the GUI, MS just used the same idea. They both stripped Xerox of the whole windows idea, they forgot about the res tof the innovative stuff going on at Xerox, even jobs admits he dropped the ball by stealing the gui when networking and email was going on at xerox as well.

Notice that, that is what all companies are doing, did Samsung say, apple made smartphone touchscreens really popular, so instead of doing what they're doing I'll be creative and continue making button only devices.

All companies do it, because to evolve and innovate, and yes copy is what keeps these technology companies around.

Extra security OPTION. OPTION.

Some users need to read harder before jumping to conclusions. Yes the rumours from certain sources have been suggesting Microsoft is doing stupid things with the next xbox, but that shouldn't dictate an intuitive negativity towards anything they do before you even understand what is being said.

I think its good that they're giving users an additional security measure to protect their accounts and private information, and its not mandatory, its optional. In light of the unexpected hacking of Playstation Online a while ago, I think its a practical and responsible move to give the option to consumers.

I am in total agreement with you.

What I don't understand is, this is old news for me. I was asked about two months ago to do this account verification process and it was Mandatory!

I signed on as usual and immediately Xbox signed me out, forcing me to update to this method. I had to enter a phone number, then they called and I entered the PIN I got from Live. It was no problem to do and I don't have an opinion on it, one way or another.

What I don't understand is why this is NEWS worthy now? Also it is not an opt-in/out option!

If I didn't do it, I wouldn't be allowed to sign in to Live until it was done? So I had no choice in the matter!

I know it's strange!

When it happened I asked friends on live and friends from this country if it happened to them?

No one else has had this bar one. The one other whom had to do it was a newbie to Xbox live and when he was prompted to do it, he presumed it was what everyone had to do?

I swear on this, I have no idea why it happened to me and a very few others... but it was Mandatory. No options except remain off Live until I accepted it!

As long as it is an option, this is an additional safeguard most will welcome. However, mandatory security measures do nothing but complicate tasks.

Its not really that hard to pick up my found open a app and read the code and enter it....

My question is if you are already verified through Windows 8, do you really need to go through all of that if everything is linked together in the first place? I thought that the idea was to do it all through that process any way or does one have to do it again and add the Xbox 360 to the device list? If one has to do it differently for every MS device it will be rather cumbersome after awhile to remember all of this. I'm all for the concept of synergy but it needs to happen in a uniformed manner not every time a new idea for a service or feature pops up. It should be old hat by now as Apple and Google have been tying everything to a single account for awhile now. Why is the safety concept just now hitting MS and will it make it easier to transfer accounts to the New console once it arrives? I'm not complain about this but curious as to why it's just now becoming a concern and if it will help simplify things really.

well apparently people bitch and complain when user accounts are hacked because of lack of security, and then they bitch when a company gives you the OPTION to make your account more secure... did any of you actually read this article before you commented, or did you just jump to a conclusion that anything microsoft implements is automatically there to make things more difficult for you. I'm not a MS fan but damn, IT'S OPTIONAL!!!! YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE IT!!!

Yes, yes MS make it inconvenient for your audience to use your service. :P Isn't there a better method? What if you don't have a phone or alternate email? Okay, I know those are unlikely cases in this day and age, but the point is, to what extent should companies rely on the tech of their audience to verify someone?

@sladakrobot @spats77 I think spats77 trying to say that Microsoft is doing a very good job of disregarding consumer feedback and not being able to visualize even current trends, let alone future ones. Also he/she dislikes Disney and there IP buying ways. Dey took 'er Ster Wers! And such.

I agree but Disney has loads of money. They're actually doing a pretty good job at this business thing. Microsoft is like Apple without the consumer research. A bunch of geniuses that think they know what people are going to need and how they are going to operate.

I've used blizzard and swtors mobile authenticators, but a new one I recently saw used was from AION. It's like a built in authenticator after the log-in screen. Anyone know how successful this was in promoting security? It brought up a small keypad with randomized number locations and you have to click on the numbers for ur password. The numbers would be in a different position on ur next log in attempt.

well finally some real security measures, good job microsoft, they are using the same measures, banks use to verify pin changes, online purchases etc.

This last few weeks microsoft have been on the headlines for bad reasons, finally some good reasons :) Good job Microsoft.
