Microsoft to Talk About Things "Beyond" Xbox One and Windows 10 Soon

Phil Spencer offers a big tease.

With rumors swirling about possible new Xbox devices, Microsoft has now teased it will soon talk about things "beyond" the Xbox One and Windows 10.

No Caption Provided

In a message posted on Xbox Wire, Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who heads up and oversees all of Microsoft's gaming endeavors, offered this teasing statement:

"Over the next few weeks and months, we'll be sharing more of our plans for gaming on Xbox One, Windows 10, and beyond."

This message was posted in a news release regarding the discontinuation of the Xbox 360. Spencer also encouraged Xbox fans to continue to send in their feedback through the Xbox Feedback site.

It is possible the "beyond" mention is in reference to HoloLens, but Spencer not mentioning it by name is curious. As for the "next few weeks and months" line, that could be a reference to E3, which takes place in June. Microsoft recently announced exactly when its briefing would be held.

Earlier this week, a report claimed that Microsoft was testing a "variety" of new Xbox prototypes, including apparently ones that can be upgraded like a PC.

Before that, Spencer talked about how Microsoft will eventually "come out with new hardware capability during a generation." The executive never said it would be this generation, and has made it clear that you won't be opening up your Xbox One with a screwdriver to install new parts.

Additionally, Spencer has said Xbox fans should not expect an Xbox One and a half.

"I'm not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we're going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers," Spencer said recently. "For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it's reliable, the servers are doing well. If we're going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people--an upgrade."

What would you like to see from Microsoft "beyond" Xbox One and Windows 10? Let us know in the comments below!

There's a lot of direction you can go with upgradable Xbox's without having to throw screw drivers into the mix. That was sort of a misdirection by Phil, to not expect a "PC as we know it." N64 once included a RAM upgrade module which essentially was incased into a cartridge. I can see having a spot for maybe two SODIMM modules accessible, via, some access panel of the Xbox, or perhaps keep everything integrated, such as it is now, but include a Thunderbolt port on each Xbox console, so that if someone wants a better gaming experience, they simply buy a discrete GPU and plug it into the box. Lots of direction they can go with this. Also, HBM memory will allow for graphics cards to get much, much smaller and less power consuming, and, so something like this becomes doubly possible, without being space invasive. Look at AMD's Nano cards, which are just as powerful as the larger Fury cards. Think of your external 3.5 Inch 2TB HDD you have plugged into your Xbox's USB3.0 port and imagine that being a graphics card in a case...that's essentially how it works. Either way, you can either keep buying pre-made console boxes that are no different than an Alienware Alpha, or build your own PC. From there, you fire up your Windows 10 Xbox App and now Xbox is a software service name, not the name of your box, per say. This is already how it is on PC.

What future? A few more rehashed IPs as the brand falls into deeper irrelevance as NX and VR takes over and MS moves to PC. Oh I know, maybe Phil will make a few more Twitter posts as a way to keep his head above water.

@boaconstricta: VR takes over...Are you on crack? :D It's a very expensive investment, and assuming everyone will enjoy it is a big assumption to make. Personally, i'm a lot more interested in AR. Whether it really stems from MS or not, i prefer the idea of being able to see & hear while i interact with media. It's all academic though, both technologies are years away from being affordable enough & portable enough for the mass market to care too much about. When AR can be done with a standard-sized pair of glasses, it'll be a revolution...Assuming nothing else amazing comes from the same field in the mean time.

@boaconstricta: You are very sure that Nintendo after the Game Cube, the Wii and the WiiU will do it right this time?

And are you sure that the VR will take off? I mean, you need to shell another $400-450 for the VR and if you want it better, another $450 for a enhanced PS4!

@thedarkoil: It was really decent but with around 20 millions units sold,Nintendo clearly made mistakes.

I dont really care how much which device was sold...i have the Game Cube and still play PSO I+II on it

@Thanatos2k: Did you read the article about Intel? They are losing their minds apparently and laying off about 12,000 people because they are slowly shifting away from their reliance on PC's as demand is falling rapidly according to them. They want to focus more on Cloud services like Microsoft is doing. PC gaming may be pretty strong still but if all the corporations are to be believed, the PC market as a whole is going the way of the Dodo. Given the way corporations are rethinking their strategy when it comes to PC, I'd say we are in for some huge changes - many likely not very good. Cloud services and mobile are taking over.

@bdrtfm: Yeah, dumb companies like Microsoft said that years ago. Which is why Steam walked in and absolutely obliterated the market right under their noses.

The above article happened TWO YEARS AGO by the way.

@bdrtfm: Makes sense. In the 90's, research showed 95% of all PC owners used them to check emails and browse the internet. Now those people have mobiles and I can assure you those people don't give a damn about the other things PC's can do (but love all the different apps they can get on their mobiles. Go figure). That's a lot of people.

Don't get me wrong, but if M$ keep talking about Windows 10 along the same line as Xbox One, then I cannot see the X1 remaining relevant in the mind of gamers for very long. If M$ is eventually going to bring all the Xbox exclusives over to PC, then it makes absolutely ZERO sense to buy the ONE justifying the purchase of PS4 even more. So I totally do NOT approve of M$'s jingle with Windows 10 at the moment. Keep the two products apart for God sake !

@starjay009: I understand where you're coming from, but think how many people don't have the means & know-how to play games on PC. There's definitely an argument to make that owning an X1 with a PC is a little redundant (though it works great for my taste), but i imagine that at least half of the current X1 owners/users don't have the option to even consider PC as a real choice to play on. Since this is likely the case, is it really a bad & evil thing for MS to want to cash in on some PC software? Afterall, it's the big money maker, or at least it should be if it's handled right...Which it currently isn't with the dodgy MS store lol.

@starjay009: i will still buy xbox even if there is a pc app with all the games. I prefer couch play, couch co-op, 1 games hub, 1 social hub, 1 matketplace, not worrying about new operating systems and requiring firmware upgrades to all of my hardware.

I did the pc thing for decades, built my own, had my own network etc. Having to have steam, origin, battle.net, gog client all open to access my games and social networks and then still having to switch servers for ventrillo, team speak or garbage in game voice clients for multiplayer was drag to say the least. Incompatible input devices etc.... no thank you

@Zzshock: Sounds like you're explaining the good old days :) Things are easier now, much easier. An Xbox 360/One pad works with just about any game over the last ten years with controller support, & Steam chat, or even Skype chat work perfectly. No need for the large groups & rooms services, at least i assume not if you're comfortable with console chat services. Updates & drivers basically handle themselves too...I mean they're basically childproof these days.

All that aside, i completely agree that it's all nonsense if you don't have the motivation for it anymore. I also own an X1 for the convenience and comfort, and it's nice just to press the Xbox button on the pad & go. Perhaps my thinking might align with yours in another five years, who knows.

Well IF Sony's NEO rumours are correct and Phil Spencer was only suggesting the idea a few weeks ago, my guess is that it will have made Xbox's sphincters clamp shut.

My guess is if they weren't planning on doing some overclocking in the slim version before, they sure as hell will be now. Bit hard to talk about something by name when you have had to throw together plans under pressure at the last minute before E3. Very likely.

As for everything else I kind of feel like this gen has been pretty lackluster. Any improvements on that will be welcomed.

"USP" (Universal Sony Platform) games? That is essential what is being proposed. The main different being:

Sony (allegedly) plans to go from point A (low performance, static h/w configuration) to point B (higher performance, static h/w). Microsoft tried to take QB from point A (low perf., static h/w) to points B-Z (wide spectrum of performance, a myriad of h/w configurations).
