Microsoft: 'The idea of ownership is morphing'

Xbox executive Phil Spencer says consumers now have more ability to connect with the content they have in new ways.

The definition of ownership is "morphing," Xbox boss Phil Spencer told GameSpot today in response to a question asking if consumers truly own the 0s and 1s that make up the digital experiences they partake in.

No Caption Provided

"I do think the idea of ownership is morphing," Spencer said. "I think it's morphing in a way that gives the consumer more ability with the content that they have."

One example Spencer pointed out was the ability for up to 10 family members to log in and play Xbox One games wherever they are.

"The definitions of some of these components do change as the technology enables new functionality," he added.

The Xbox One launches in November for $499, a full $100 above competitor Sony's PlayStation 4, which will launch later this year for $399.

The idea of ownership is not morphing. That's just bullshit companies are dishing out to try to change the minds of consumers.

And it's working.

"I do think the idea of ownership is morphing," Spencer said. "I think it's morphing in a way that gives the consumer more ability with the content that they have." (followed up with more talk that is purposefully designed to make your head spin and go 'nope, not reading that')

Translation: we think we can get away with more crap for this gen, and as long as we tell people they're smart and that it'll be better than it appears now, they'll follow like little lambs.

I don't want to constantly have negative reactions to anything concerning the Xbox One, but you know...they're making it mighty difficult for me!

the idea may be morphing Phil, but the definition hasn't changed. If I pay someone money to BUY something, I then take ownership of it. That means it is mine to do with as I please. RENTING is closer to what you folks are describing, and that shouldn't cost me $60 a game.

Forgot to cross your fingers MS. Making a wish like that with no candles and no lucky charms doesn't bode well.

After purchasing something, I become the owner of it and can do whatever I want to with it. Whoever thinks otherwise is a moron.

Microsoft should just have saved on the blu-ray player and go all digital, then I would have understood these statements and policies.

Do they think they'll sell consoles by laughing at their clients ?

This is really an unheard of commercial strategy.

It proves MS management has completely lost contact with its player base. How sad for a brand that *was* as strong as Xbox.

Ownership is morphing?

If I buy something with my money then it should belong to me 100% and I should have full access with it to do with whatever I want whenever I want because it is mine and I paid for it. There should be no morphing of that at all.

Microsoft seems to want you to pay for their products, but they want you to only be able to do with them what they think you should, thus removing the buyers ownership and sharing it with them under their guidelines. That isn't ownership.

And whats really sad is Microsoft can justify to themselves that you shouldn't have ownership of something you buy, and worse yet is people are defending them in it and agreeing with them. Customers defending a company that wont let you truly own the product you bought. That's damn sad.

Microsoft: 'The idea of ownership is morphing'.

Translation: For Rent. At least for M$. What use are those games for that Xbone when it's life cycle is done?

Doesn't feel owned now, right?

I agree, it is morphing. Because the US judicial system has laid down with these companies and is on an almost unrestrained campaign to shift things ever farther away from the consumer. So now they feel, more or less correctly, that they can do whatever they want. And anyone who complains is obviously clueless about how the world *really* works!

He's so right I would have so much more ability with the content, as long as I can afford a high speed internet connection, whatever "xbox live" fee that must be paid, oh and gotta love that "ability" to play my games while the internet is out!

No, it's not. The idea of ownership remains the same. - I pay money, in return I own the product and do whatever I want with it. Not much room for "morphing".
You microsoft, are trying to morph people's idea about it.
But that is you trying to morph a concept to suit your needs, not the actual concept(ownership) morphing.-

@retsmot I fear for them it is too late. The whole architecture of the Xbox One should be rewritten and it's too late.

So lets watch the Xbone fatefully move to it's bitter end.

@tevic @retsmot This is why I can't take those defending it when M$ said they would also leave it up to the developers like Sony, but M$ still have their architecture build around it, so it's not the same.

I guess this morphing business is like a relationship with a hooker.

Even though I paid good money for one, I dont really own the person. The hooker is never my property. I'm only paying for a service and the hooker will be phoning her p1mp once every 24hrs of our relationship to make sure I still have $ on my card.

And if I should ever want to share this hooker with a friend, I have to make sure said friend has actually been a buddy for the last 30 days.

Does that sound about right Microsoft? I'm a bit slow when you make things too complicated, so I hope I have I got this down right.

This is BS. This moron Spencer is trying to sell cloud software as the future, while stripping people of the right to own what they buy (offline copies that can be played anywhere, without needing an unreliable network intermediary). He's obfuscating the truth, and that means he should be fired immediately for trying to deceive the public.

He contradicted himself: he said it's "giving more ability to the consumer" but he seems to still uphold the fact that Microsoft was in the right to reduce the abilities you have with their trade and play restrictions.

Really? Because restricting what we do with it after we have bought it gives us less ability to do what we want with it.

Maybe what he meant to say was that ownership was morphing in that publishers/Microsoft will continue to own it even after we've paid for it.

Cast a thought if you're unable to trade the Xbox one if needed. To do that, you may probably have to delete your account from it, rendering all content history gone as the hard drive is unremovable, to that end, we may have to re-buy on a new system if we wanted to return. No justification for ownership morphing.

God dammit, MS! Just shut your fucking mouths. Every time you try to do damage control, you only make it worse! Shutting up now is the only way to at least stop the bleeding. First, you tell us if we don't have Internet to buy a 360, now you're telling us what ownership actually is? Seriously, just ... shut up for the love of God.

Well in mathematics, how you define things is important to what you can do. I think microsoft is redefining "ownership" in order to make more money. Hmm, I think microsoft found out what the underpants gnomes "step 2" was.
