Microsoft "Taking Extra Time" For Halo Backwards Compatibility Additions

"We're taking extra time to ensure the experience lives up to fan expectations."

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that four Halo games--Halo: CE Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo 4--are coming to Xbox One through backwards compatibility. That still hasn't happened, and developer 343 Industries has now given another update on the matter--and it sounds like the games should be added to the catalog soon.

In its latest weekly blog post, 343 said it understands that players are "very eager" to bring the four Xbox 360 games to Xbox One. The backwards compatibility team is "hard at work on final polish," 343 added, so it sounds like the release is coming up shortly.

"We are eager to get them into your hands!" 343 said. "The Xbox back-compat team is hard at work on final polish and we continue to work closely with them to help test and evaluate all four games for launch.

"We're taking extra time to ensure the experience lives up to fan expectations but I hear we're making great progress and release should be getting closer."

Back in July, when the backwards compatibility news was announced, Microsoft said the four games would be out later this year, so they aren't late.

All of the DLC for the four Xbox 360 Halo games is now free. That's good news because it means the player bases won't be fragmented and that every player will have access to every map released across the titles.

While the four games are already playable on Xbox One through Master Chief Collection, adding the titles by way of backwards compatibility is a nice gesture. If you own a copy of one of these four games, you can simply put one of the disks in your Xbox One to play once they're made available. They'll also be available to buy and download individually if you don't already own them.

A waste of human resources. Master Chief collection is better and dirt cheap now.

Halo 5's Multiplayer is leagues ahead of destiny atm

I'll wait for Reach. Still my favorite Halo.

Avatar image for GinsuVictim

@lionheartssj1: Already BC.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@lionheartssj1: Reach has been backward compatible for a long time now. No need to wait.

@dlCHIEF58: Oh did I miss that?!

Avatar image for Geocross

@dlCHIEF58: and it was free right after it became BC, I play multiplayer once in a while

i am sorry but i could have sworn there was a 5th halo shooter on the 360. one thats still not recieved a 1080p upgrade even tho its the best flipping one! come on!

Avatar image for sephirothswing

@deathwish026: yeah, Reach, I'd love to see that in the engines we have now.

Avatar image for GinsuVictim

@deathwish026: The only they don't mention in the article is Reach, which is already BC.

Avatar image for deathwish026

@GinsuVictim: it is but its the only one that hasent already been upgraded for xbox one. playing the bc versions is pointless if you have MCC. reach needs an upgrade. i dont even care about the other halos

I want Halo 6 and I want it without Agent Locke and teams. Halo was fun when it was the lone Spartan with his AI assistant taking on the whole Covenant army.

Avatar image for biggamerdude

@Defender1978: Why would you want another game just like the bungie games? Why would you want them to play it so safe? Im fine with them making it different, but i just want it to get rid of the squad system

Avatar image for Pyrosa

@Defender1978: Err... Umm... You know that arrangement is utterly impossible, based on the [weak & lazy] "plot" of Halo 5, right?

Having Locke and Buck in the field is a refreshing change of pace. ...especially Buck.

Now, if they want to bring back M.Rod and David Cross as marines/followers again (see Halo2), I'm all for it. Best banter in the series!

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@Pyrosa: I personally can't stand the banter, it's like being part of the corniest summer action movie but in the game it's presented very seriously, Halo is like a Saturday morning version of the Expendables...

Expendables was more like fan service for people who like the actors, but Halo seems to chuck any nostalgia in favor of being up its own ass, it's like they want to take whatever the past games did that people liked but crank it up to 11 and it ends up being contrived and annoying

It'd be nice if they had a more serious and on point direction like the Half Life games used to

Wake me up when it comes to PC.

It's a 1st person shooter, put it where it belongs.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@Dark_Matters: Actually it belongs as a Mac game, as Bungie were primarily Mac developers before Microsoft purchased them and Halo was to be a Mac game until then. Suck on that!

Avatar image for darksouls

@Dark_Matters: Honestly, I couldnt and wouldnt want to play it anywhere else. It does belong on Xbox (although it would be better on PC no doubt).

I'm all Haloed out

Halo MCC is just fine now, no need for the old games.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@chiefwiggum16: Yes there is.

343 what a name, long live grand theft auto, or star citizen.

Oh get of my back alright.

Avatar image for shlompskii

i dont really know how they bring back old games but will it have multiplayer servers? halo 3 specifically

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@shlompskii: All the 360 Halo games have active, working servers. It is a very rare thing for Microsoft to close any of their own servers.

Yea same question here

Avatar image for Zorlac

@7tizz: Well it is the 360 games, so it would be weird if you couldn't play with 360 players.
