Microsoft suggests small businesses buy an Xbox One for the workplace

Microsoft says its upcoming next-generation console would be excellent at servicing networking and conferencing needs in the workplace.

Alongside gamers and families, Microsoft is now saying the Xbox One would be a perfect device for small businesses.

No Caption Provided

In a public letter to small business owners, Microsoft director of consumer camp Marques Lyons has said many of the applications and features available to the upcoming next-generation console would be valuable to the networking and conferencing needs of offices.

"In fact, it's entirely justifiable to make the Xbox One a business expense," wrote Lyons. "The Xbox One, priced at $499, is an affordable option for small business owners, as there are many features built into the console that could help it rival even the most modest of video conferencing and networking platforms."

"What is being positioned as an excellent entertainment device can be just as enticing for you and your small business."

"Utilize Skype," continued Lyons, "and the power of group chatting, to have that collaborative exchange with clients and co-workers, no matter where in the world they happen to be."

"Utilize the size of that nice TV screen to see every smile and nod as your next great plan comes together. The Xbox One with Kinect, as a Skype provider, is just as capable as a PC with an attached/included microphone and webcam. The difference here is that Xbox One and Kinect gives you the open space to move, gesture, show examples, and see everyone more clearly."

Lyons also suggested a workplace mix of SkyDrive, Office Web Apps, and Kinect. "The SkyDrive app can let you easily access both photos and videos for viewing. If you're hosting a meeting at your office, don't worry about attaching a PC to the TV or using a projector. Store your videos in SkyDrive and then use the app to open that video. Do you have photos from recent travels or images showing details and diagrams? Open them with SkyDrive, navigate them with Kinect voice or hand gestures, be free from tethering that PC around."

"With SkyDrive via Internet Explorer, you can use it with the Office Web Apps to open that Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint. Use the Kinect voice and hand gestures to navigate to websites. Now you're free of clickers and light pens to use your hands to for more expressive gestures."

Lyons also said a mix of SmartGlass and Wi-Fi Direct would be useful in the workplace, allowing workers to beam presentations onto a large TV screen and control them with a tablet.

Future applications might also be released to assist businesses, added Lyons. "The app story of Xbox One has yet to be written, therefore it is entirely possible to find apps down the road that could be of benefit for you and your business. With the processing power, snap mode, and connection to a large screen, that the Xbox One has, this device is capable of going from the 'break room' to the 'board room'."

The Xbox One will be released this November for $499/€499/£425.

Don't tell me this was another ace in the hole from Don Mattrick! "We completely blew our launch campaign with our customers but hopefully some small businesses will pick one up. At least we don't have to worry about them having an internet connection" !!

Or you can buy a comparable webcam for $40.

Anyone who suggests a $500 Xbox for conference calls needs to be fired.

Good luck with that project, I bet every small business owner is looking for a device with an incorporated spy cam that spy on them -.- (sarcasm)

Wouldn't a Laptop be much more useful for all those features they are saying it would be good for a small business? a Xbox makes no sense for a small business or any other size business for that matter.

LOL cause gamers sure don't want one. Somebody out there has to. Seriously, as much as MS likes buying out companies, I wouldn't buy one. You're automatically inviting them to all your meetings.

Considering how much Cisco charges for their telepresence equipment, the Xbox One with Kinect is actually a good deal. I work in a multi-national company and I want THIS (http://bostinno.streetwise.co/2011/04/05/mit-kinect-hack-kinected-video-conference/) in our meetings with our foreign offices.

Nah, man. I just don't understand why Cisco could charge so much for their basic stuff. My Cisco headset in my office cost 350! I wish my company just gave me a basic headset and let me keep the other 300. Also, WiiU sucks.

@racerxgundam Just let your boss buy one so you can play it when he's not looking. That way you only have to be spied on at work.

on the psp u can get the castlevania chronicles...comes with SOTN a rondo remake and the original. but the catch is u have to unlock the stuff. not hard to unlock it

@racerxgundam a little. I like 3 on NES, SOTN on PSX and Dawn of Sorrow on DS. I have this weird obsession with playing the PC Engine Rondo of blood, like im missing something, but I want to play it on a duo, no emu

what is it about it you like?

So a business can justify outfitting its offices with xbox one because of its "features"? Thats laughable.

Everything they mentioned can be done on a PC with the same software such as skype, office web aps, wifi direct and internet explorer. I doubt there is a business out there now that needs the features the xbox one has that doesnt already have computer systems that can do those same things, plus A WHOLE LOT MORE. A PC can do all of those things more efficently and about a million other things a xb1 cant.

Not to mention a business can get a more powerful PC for the same price as an xb1 which is a static machine and can not be upgraded. The only thing someone could concieveably want is a kinect, but hey you can buy one right now and hook it up to a PC.

Anytime a company tries to make a device "for everyone and everything" it usually lacks in every category because instead of focusing on what its intended to do it tries to appeal to everyone and half asses everything in order to make something that does everything. Thats part of why the PS3 had such a rocky start is because of its high price tag because it was trying to be an everything box, but in the end no one wanted an everything box, they wanted a box for games.
