Microsoft Sees The Outer Worlds As An Exclusive Franchise

Bootylicious.

75 Comments

The Outer Worlds is shaping up quite nicely ahead of its release on October 25 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, with a Switch version arriving at a later date. If you want to play its potential sequel, however, you might need an Xbox.

That's the word from head of Xbox Studios Matt Booty, who revealed during an interview with Game Informer that Microsoft believes The Outer Worlds can be "an enduring franchise" for the company. Microsoft acquired Obsidian, the studio developing The Outer Worlds, back in 2018, adding it to the list of 15 developers that comprise the Xbox Games Studios' roster alongside the likes of Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Playground Games.

No Caption Provided

The Outer Worlds is currently being published by Private Division, the indie-centric publishing arm of Take-Two. But beyond this, Microsoft will likely be handling publishing duties for any potential sequels, which could also mean the franchise becomes a Microsoft exclusive.

This isn't the case with all of Microsoft's first-party projects. Booty explains that with an IP like Minecraft, for example, it makes sense to keep the franchise as open and multi-platform as possible, whereas other games will be better supported by the resources Microsoft can put into them. The Outer Worlds falls into the latter category, as Booty expresses Microsoft's high hopes for the game and its future potential.

“I think that it's a great universe they’ve created," he says. "And I think about what are the things that you need for a franchise to kind of bear weight? Like what can it withstand? Is it a narrative, is it a set of characters, is it a universe that's big enough that you could start to add onto it?”

While PlayStation 4 and Switch owners will be able to get their hands on The Outer Worlds later this year, they might need to invest in an Xbox or PC to continue the interstellar story.

All exclusives I accept as long as it is not an Epic store exclusive.

Game looks good so far. If the game is good and sells well, it'll be a great exclusive for Xbox.

I was looking forward to this game until I read this. Now I think I'll hold off on buying it until I can get it with all the DLC cheap on Black Friday 2020.

Maybe it should be exclusive, just to see how those that say "XbOX HaS nO gamEs" would react.

I like Obsidian, but I'm not huge on the idea of planning a whole franchise before the first game is even available

Yeah, I will NEVER buy any platform just to play a desirable game-series, so if that is the intent, it will fail on me. I will just stick to the PC version, thank you...

@Eryxx: Why else would you buy a system then? You buy the system that has your type of games.

@Shantmaster_K:
No, that's why YOU buy a system, I buy a system because I want it, I can afford it, and it has at least a few games that I would like to play. I would NEVER buy a system just for -1- game or game franchise (i.e. "Halo," etc.) that I wanted.

@Eryxx: Well I wasn't referring that you would buy a system just for one game, but exclusives overall matter to the console. I wouldn't buy a Xbox just for Halo, but Xbox has the exclusives that I care about more, so I'd get an Xbox to play the multi-platform games while enjoying it's exclusives. Exclusives make a difference.

@Shantmaster_K:

Fair enough, we all have our reasons for the platform(s) that we purchase and/or game on, while I am not the type of gamer who follows dedicated game-franchises, you are that type of gamer, and that's perfectly fine. I tend to play more on my PC anyhow (which is typically -- but not always -- included in all the game-series, even the exclusive ones,) but I do have a PS4 Pro so the exclusivity factor does have some effect on my platform, but little effect on me as the player. Anyhow, I think the original point of my post was simply to counter the implication of the article that some players might adopt the XBox platform simply because the sequel to "The Outer Worlds" wasn't available on Sony or Nintendo hardware, and there hasn't been a game-series yet that would entice me to lay out 3-bills just to play one sequel, or even an entire series of them.

Game on, man!

@Eryxx: Ya I find it hard to purchase a console for just one game. There are games though out there that are system sellers. Halo, God of War, Spider-man, Mario games, etc.. Will Outer Worlds be one? Too early to tell.

i hope it turns out to be true...but...MS has some very promising titles (or contracts with Publishers) and does nothing with it(yet) : Quantum Break,Sunset Overdrive,Ryse,Recore and various titles they forgot from the og xbox and X360 era which cried for a sequel

@sladakrobot: Yeah, all those games I really enjoyed, but they didn't sell well for some reason. Luckily with Game Pass, a series doesn't necessarily have to sell well, just have enough interest in it for people to play it.

As long as it's on PC, I don't care what consoles get it. If it's exclusive to X-Box only it will just show MS has learned nothing.

Re-reading the quotes, it makes it sound less like an "Xbox exclusive" and just hopes that it will be "an enduring franchise" for the company.

I've never understood the desire to create exclusive games. It is not going to make me go out and buy an additional system. (like i could afford to anyway)

All it means is they have less money coming in the door, because they are selling fewer copies. If that is the choice that Sony or Microsoft make, than so be it.

Its just one less game I have to save up for, and one less sequel I have to wait for.

@subclass037: It's simple... to sell their system or brand. God of War, Halo, Spider Man, Gears, Mario games... all are system sellers. Exclusive developers are well compensated by their exclusivity rights.

@subclass037: Not really. For the developer and publisher, it's fine. They get a hefty payment for the exclusivity deal. For the platform maker, i.e., Sony or M$, they get an exclusive offering for their console to entice people to buy it. Even if nobody comes running to buy the console for it, they'll still make the money they would have from people who already own the system buying the game. Giant corporations wouldn't be doing this if it made no economic sense for them. It's that simple.

@subclass037: I agree. They already have the majority of the PC video game market. So if they make it exclusive they should have it on Windows PC too. That way they sell to xbox and pc owners.

@subclass037: Supposedly the publisher pays for that exclusivity and, potentially, guarantees the studio will make a profit. If you ask the devs, I imagine you'll discover 99% of them prefer to remain employed over being liked.

One thing you guys still seem to struggle with understanding: one rich guy who can buy every console and 10 copies of the game for all of his friends is worth more than 10 cheapskates. No one is really interested in making the games more financially accessible. It's not good business.

@Shantmaster_K: Exclusive means platform exclusive, not console exclusive. Microsoft's desperate desire to change the definition doesn't change the definition.

I honestly think this will cause more bad press than good for them. A bit like the Rise Of The Tomb Raider scenario, the casual audience will be very peeved off.

@gamingdevil800: MS doesn't own Eidos though, so there was nothing to really worry about there aside from the delay. The later version was a whole lot better anyway.

@Barighm: I know I was thinking more of the lines of Tomb Raider to Rise everyone bought it on PS3, 360 and PC. Then Rise the options where limited. Same case with Outer Worlds although presumably a sequel would be on the windows store.
