Microsoft seeking dev to make game in "well-loved" strategy series

A new job posting hints at what could be a new Age of Empires or Halo Wars game.

Microsoft may be in the process of reviving one of its strategy game series, if a new job listing can be believed.

The job opening is for an engineering position and was published on April 28, as discovered by CVG. The description says Microsoft Studios is seeking someone "to help build and lead the team for a new AAA title within an established and well-loved strategy game franchise."

Additional details regarding what project the prospective employee would be working on were not provided, but that short sentence suggests multiple possibilities.

Age of Empires immediately springs to mind as Microsoft's biggest strategy game series. The real-time-strategy series was last seen just last year, when an HD remake of Age of Empires II was released on PC. Prior to that, Microsoft released Age of Empires Online, a hybrid between RTS games and MMOs that is no longer being supported and will be taken offline this summer.

Unlike the earlier games in the series, Online was not developed by Ensemble Studios, which was shut down in 2009. Just prior to being closed, Ensemble developed Halo strategy game Halo Wars, which seems like another possible candidate for what Microsoft could be cooking up a sequel to. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer told IGN earlier this year that he thought the original Halo Wars was fun and expressed interest in seeing a new one. He also suggested it was possible that such a game could be developed internally due to there not being many "great RTS developers out there anymore."

The Rise of Nations series, developed by Big Huge Games (which, like Ensemble, is now defunct), is another strategy game series Microsoft has been involved with in the past, albeit one with less name recognition than Age of Empires. When Big Huge's owner, 38 Studios, went out of business, the rights to Rise of Nations were auctioned off to an unknown party, making it unlikely that it is the series Microsoft is now working on.

Of the strategy game series in Microsoft's history, which one are you hoping is brought back? Let us know in the comments below.

They need to make Age of Mythologies II: Age of Kings like they remade the first AOE with myth units. AOE2 was my favorite and AOM comes second place. So it'd be a dream come true to see AOE2 made into a mythology game to include various mythical medieval creatures, units, and heroes (BEOWULF!!!).

Hope Age of Empires !!!! Or Age of Mythology.

They should make it big. From stone age to 21st century.

Not in the same online game like empire earth but you could choose which style you want to play.

Though everybody may want AoE, RoN or even Halo to make a return, there's no reason why Microsoft couldn't purchase the rights to another franchise that its owners have royally screwed over in the past 12 months - you know who you are.

Having played Halo Wars and not raging after 5 mins about how this Halo game sucks because it's not a shooter, that game was actually amazing. Probably the best console RTS with tight controls and although it was 'simple', you can't make a complicated RTS for controllers.

Halo Wars 2 please god damn it.

<addendum to my post below>

You know, it occurs to me that Halo Wars was like 5-6 years ago, and it actually makes business-sense for MS to reinvest in branches of the Halo universe for the newest batch of gamers. Even if it's just another "pretty but simple" entry in the franchise, if they get the Co-operative AND Competitive MP aspects correct this time then they could do a lot of good for RTSes overall. I.e., build up a new batch of young RTS gamers that will eventually graduate to proper PC-based RTSes, fueling a new resurgence in PC RTSes (hopefully)...

Sure, the obvious choice is that they're developing AoE4 or AoE reboot (preferred), but if they're doing something on consoles then I'm guessing it's HW2.

Or for yet another take: I don't care WHAT it is -- if it's an RTS with a campaign + co-op + competitive MP, I'm in on ANY platform for ANY of these series.

Awesome. Free to play on Driod, loaded with microtransactions, and as mundane and without substance as possible.

Gaming has never had a brighter future.

Im guessing age of empires 4. Probably medieval times. Age of kings i think was the most popular . I dont think they will do ww2. Company of heroes already dominates that time period. Also without the eco aspect its not ageo of empires. Ww1 would make a boring rts, just trench warfare. Maybe a game set in the future with planet colonization (not halo wars), but i doubt it.

But they can do all in one game. Before you start the game with your friend just choose when you want to start and setup 4 or more age up levels.

So if you want to play classic aoe just start in stone age.

It would be so gooood !!!

AOE4 or AOM2 would just be fantastic. They also forgot to mention the AOM Extended HD remake that comes out tomorrow. All signs point to Age of Something game.

I always thougth RTS meet FPS would have worked well as most FPS take place in open battlefield and its the same for RTS games, I have seen about 3 games that have RTS/FPS elements but there not so great, nothing that did that well.

you thougth the idea would go hand in hand and potentially could kill two bird with one stone.

but as with most game it all a question of balanced gameplay and over all fun factor.

Considering how hard Assault Squad 2 and CoH 2 are failing you might as well stick to that artwork and make that world war themed Age of Empires IV you should of made a decade ago.

Mobile shit will be ignored so don't bother.

Knowing Microsoft, it'll be another FTP AoE, that will release first on iOS and Android, then Windows Phone, just because thats how the suits think.

I liked the premise of Halo Wars, but it felt way too confining. There was not enough freedom for my taste. You could only plop down your base in a certain place and then only build on that little spot. I like strategy games where you can freely design your base layout as you see fit.
