Microsoft scraps developer fees for Xbox 360 patches - Report

Title updates for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games are now free.

A change of policy at Microsoft means the platform-holder is no longer charging developers for Xbox 360 title updates, a new report has said.

Eurogamer reports that Microsoft quietly ushered in the change earlier in 2013 and that developers are no longer charged a fee to re-certify their games through Microsoft's submission process. Microsoft still charges a fee to developers when they initially submit Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games to be published, with the games then tested and sent for approval through Microsoft's certification process.

There are reported to be a few caveats, with Microsoft able to charge developers if it suspects an excessive number of submissions.

Additionally, a source told GameSpot that Microsoft no longer charges developers to have Xbox Live Arcade games re-certified if they fail their initial submission. The move is believed to have been implemented to help smaller developers who lack the resources of bigger publishers, and avoid situations such as when Fez developer Polytron opted to rerelease a patch with a potential save-corrupting bug in 2012.

Microsoft's previous system gave developers one title update for free, before levying fees upon subsequent updates. Double Fine boss Tim Schafer attached a $40,000 figure to the fee in an interview with Hookshot in 2012.

Microsoft's choice to charge for additional title updates was so that developers would focus more on the quality of their software before initial release, GameSpot has been told.

Abolishing some of the fees attached to the Xbox 360 submission process brings Microsoft's publishing model one step closer to PC platform Steam.

Fez developer Phil Fish previously said that the situation with Fez would never have happened with Steam. "Had Fez been released on Steam instead of XBLA," said the developer a year before porting the game on Steam, "[Fez] would have been fixed two weeks after release, at no cost to us."

@robert83a2 as long as they are all positive changes, it's good for the consumers. Still 5 more months til November it's possible there may be more changes and it also keep their competitors on their feet. The big winners are us the consumers.

How is this good news? This means more bugs in games when they are released since theyre more inclined to just fix them later. Gamespot is full of idiots.

While that was the initial reasoning behind the fee, Microsoft must have discovered it didn't work. There are many games out there that never received an additional patch after the first free one - now that that fee is gone developers may be more likely to patch more things that they may have missed or broke the first time (like Fez, though I wouldn't count on it from that douchebag Phil Fish).

@the_big_doggg This was a stupid policy in the first place when it comes to indie developers. They don't have the funds to consistently check for bugs like big publishers can. Tell me which system would you develop for, 360 which charges you if a bug happens to pop up (Which they do even with the most tested of games) or pc which is free.

@Getesh @the_big_doggg exactly; this charging of fees is a detriment to smaller teams who just don't have the money to rigorously check their game for every single bug present.
It can even serve as a way to lower quality, as some indie devs might not find it worthwhile, or can't afford to update their game to crush every bug.

Its all about quality control, make sure your game is done the tested before you release and not come with all these silly patches. Also it cost MS to test these patches. This is done both on XBL and PSN, but obviously MS gets all the hate.

I wonder how developer got their game right the first time back when it was all on cartridges

@thequickshooter I do agree with you completely on your point about developers releasing broken products. It is just a disaster when a company releases a broken product with hopes of fixing it with patches later. I think it's downright wrong. However, no product is perfect and all titles can be improved upon in one way or another. Making it easier for developers to improve their product after receiving feedback is a great benefit for them and us.

The releasing of broken games needs to be a thing of the past. The convenience of making a good game even better is fantastic in my opinion.

@thequickshooter @WantYouBad yes it is about quality control, but let's not pretend it does not have its downside. Charging indie devs, who can range from big setups like Double Fine, right down to one-two man teams like the guy behind Gunpoint, can be extremely detrimental to the guys working with a lower budget.
In fact, i'd argue it lowers the quality of games by smaller setups, as they may not be able to pay, or think it's not worthwhile paying, to update their game.

Yes, games should be playable since day one, but you are applying principles that are normally attached to triple A games, to games that work on an absolute fraction of the budget.

Of course indie devs do test their games, but it will almost never be as rigorous as what you would expect from a high budget game. Bugs will get through; this is software after all, and bugs are an inevitability, but with indie devs limited budget, finding and crushing every single bug just isn't realistic.

the first batch of patches SHOULD be free

but i wouldn't want another free riders game on my xbox

remember when you buy a game it should have been playable from version 1.00

since game companies use game testers nowdays

No one but the developers and Microsoft know for sure what the cost for patches is. The 40K was thrown out there in an interview with Tim Schaefer which may be valid for full retail $60 games, but that would not apply to Live Arcade titles due to the lower price point and lower overall profit.

@WantYouBad Of course they did. This is a business, not a charity. Why would any company provide a service (certification to make sure your patch doesn't brick the system, etc.) and not charge for it?

Now the platform just needs self-publishing.

Yeah, a nice move, but one probably motivated by observing their competition. I would hate to see how MS would do things if they didn't have so much and so varied competition in the gaming industry.

It at least gives me hope that they'll behave themselves if we keep them on their toes and keep supporting their competitors, that way they won't be able to pull more X-box One style crap on us.

if you look at gog.com there are too many lackluster indie titles over-shadowing great indie titles like the new giana sisters and more

but yes making a "select" indie titles on xbox live would be wrong
