Microsoft Says It Didn't Need Halo Infinite To Be A Launch Title For Series X To Succeed

Having Halo Infinite available at launch would have been "tremendous," Microsoft says, but it wasn't meant to be.

Halo Infinite was supposed to headline the launch lineup for the Xbox Series X/S, but Microsoft delayed the game to 2021 due in part to the impact of COVID-19 and working from home. It's a big loss for the console's launch, as it would have marked the first time since the original Halo in 2001 that a Halo title was released day-and-date with new Xbox hardware.

But in a statement to The New York Times, Xbox spokesperson Cindy Walker downplayed the Halo Infinite delay. Walker said Microsoft of course would have wanted to have Halo Infinite ready for the Series X/S launch, but despite the delay, Walker remains confident that there will be enough games available at launch to encourage people to buy in.

Now Playing: What Halo Infinite's Delay Means For Xbox Series X's Launch | Generation Next

"Having Halo at our launch would have been tremendous," but "we are not reliant on massive exclusive titles to drive console adoption," Walker said. "Our players will have thousands of games from four generations of Xbox available to play on launch day."

After the Halo Infinite delay was announced, Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed that Microsoft considered releasing a portion of Halo Infinite earlier before deciding to push the entire game to a new release date in 2021.

The "thousands" of games that Walker is referring to comes from backwards compatibility support for original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games. But looking directly at first-party games, Microsoft only has one "new" major game coming, at least so far. The console edition of the strategy game Gears Tactics will be released as a launch title for Xbox Series X/S, and it will also play on the standard Xbox One. An upgraded version of the previously released Gears 5 will also be available on Series X/S on launch day.

Third-party Xbox Series X/S launch titles include Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Dirt 5, FIFA 21, Fortnite, Marvel's Avengers, NBA 2K21, Watch Dogs Legion, and Tetris Effect: Connected, and these games will also be available for current-gen. Check out GameSpot's full roundup of Xbox Series X/S launch titles here.

The Xbox Series X/S is scheduled to launch on November 10, and pre-orders will begin from September 22. The S model costs $300 USD and the X edition is going for $500 USD, and those prices are intentionally low. Xbox CFO Tim Stuart recently explained that Microsoft went with relatively low prices to help create a large install base more quickly.

This seems in line with their business model really. I'll be using their platform since I have a pc that'll run the next gen stuff with ray tracing and all the prettiness. But it's the only way I'd be playing MS games at all. I wouldn't be buying a new xbox regarless of what I had for a PC. Their offerings were really disappointing on the xbone and found myself enjoying PS games a lot more. I don't know how people who will be getting a series x feel about MS's gaming model but it works out well for me.

This is laughable spin and BS. Microsoft is trying to cover up for 343i's project management ineptitude and the inescapable and unspinnable fact that they had 5 years, nearly unlimited budget and resources just to not be able to meet a crucial deadline.

The fact that Microsoft brought in Bungie's campaign lead to fix the single player this late in the game testifies to not only the bad current state of the game but also the lack of confidence Microsoft has in 343i to get to the finish line.

Infinite's delay to an ambiguous 2021 date greatly hurts their gen 9 console launch. There is no getting around that.

@psychomantisiii: Not necessarily true and I believe they do not really need Infinite to succeed. I am not burned up about it being delayed as I know it will come soon but I am more into the Game Pass Ultimate and getting to play new games. I also do not base my purchases on one game. However, I even if Infinite was delayed, I am not rushing out and buying an PA5 or XBone X Series as I like to wait for the bug test.

I have never seen a manufacturer do so much to hamper the sales of their product than Microsoft and the Xbox. First it was the play any Xbox game on PC without the need for a console, now believing they don't need exclusives to sell consoles.

@khelandros: They have said a number of times they don't need people to buy the console and that's not the main goal. It's about giving people options to play where they want. Exclusives are great for consoles but bad for gamers as a whole, especially when the players game on different devices. As a PC gamer I really like that they are putting more effort into accessibility. Sony has also stated they would like more of their exclusives to go to PC which is more good news. Game where you want with whoever you want via cross play, that is what I like to see.

They never said that. In fact, she said it would have been tremendous if Infinite had released on time. But it would have been disastrously if it was a flop. The good news is, even without Halo, they still have thousands of games available to play on it, including all new ones as well as Series X exclusives like Gears Tactics, Scorn, Medium and more.

@khelandros: Their strategy is simply different than Sony's. Its OK if you don't like it. They're not expecting everyone to. The money is in software and services. If they can sell you that without having to sell hardware, they still make money. Both consoles almost have no value this launch unless you are a huge fan of Ratchet & Clank or are willing to spend $500 to play Spider-Man DLC. I don't see any point in buying either console at launch.

@bdrtfm:

PS4: Look at our exclusives you can only play on PS4 - 110 Million sold

Switch: Look at our exclusives you can only play on Switch - 56 million sold (The Wii with it's exclusives sold 102 million units)

XB1: Play our games on PC aswell, with out a console - 48 million sold

Different? Sure. Right? Numbers say no. But I guess when you have a monopoly on business software/operating systems, you don't mind taking a hit in other departments.

@bdrtfm: Clearly you need to sell hardware to offer services for it. The strategy might be different for Xbox, but that doesn't mean it's better. Xbox seems more arrogant than before

Sony has a stream today, so saying both consoles don't have much is pointless until after the stream. Spider-man MM is also a standalone like Infamous First Light.

@psychomantisiii: No. You don't. Microsoft doesn't sell PC hardware other than peripherals. If they can get you into their ecosystem on PC or other devices using xCloud, no need for them to sell you hardware. But if you want to buy new hardware, you can. And that new hardware will support the majority of 360 games, all Xbox One games and many original Xbox games. It will also support any peripherals you bought for your Xbox One. And if you bought certain games, you get an Xbox Series X upgrade as well. Not sure how anyone can see any of this as negative. The fact that Microsoft isn't forcing us to buy an Xbox Series X day one or risk being left behind is a good thing. Honestly, I don't understand how people can paint this as a negative? "I'm not buying an Xbox Series X at launch because I have a super powerful $3500-$5000 gaming rig so there." Cool. Microsoft doesn't care. People with these rigs will still be buying Windows 10, video games and services from Microsoft. Its like people just don't understand that Microsoft has two platfoms.

It certainly wouldn't have hurt. Every console launch needs one or more big compelling exclusives imo. I mean, the Xbox and PlayStation have such a scarce launch lineup, I see no reason to buy myself either console for at least a year. Any of the games launching before then are not ones I would want to pay $90 Canadian for. Never liked Ratchet & Clank and I'm not paying $500 to play upgraded versions of Xbox and PlayStation games I've already played or to play Spider-Man DLC. I can wait.

Is this why they delayed it for years so it lauches with the XSX? 🤣And even after the long delays their end result was such a meme they delayed it even further, possibly for an addtional year.

MS is pretending they don't need Halo, but why not tell everyone their console sales, then? You can bet your ass they won't tell anyone cuz XSX will be selling on par with the WiiU.

It would have been nice to have Master Chief on launch day, but we have learned how to game without the Halo franchise for quite some time, so it's not as critically important as say Miles Spider-Man for the PS5 as it stands as the only reason why to even consider a PS5.

@kraenk12: Spider-Man is just a stand alone DLC. Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of US 2 and Death Stranding are BC games, not launch titles. If that's how you are counting launch exclusives, Xbox Series X will be getting dozens of Xbox One game titles upgraded for the X as well as Hundreds of Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox BC games at launch. Big deal.

@ahrequenomori: I have it. I haven't played it or UC4 yet. I have to finish the Nathan Drake collection first. But I had my PS4 for a long time before I got those and I got all of them except Lost Legacy for free. I know how standalone DLC works. I've played many of them. And I've never played a standalone DLC worth buying a $500 console for. I'll wait for both consoles to bake another year or so before getting either one. I'm in no hurry.

Only Ratchet&Clank is confirmed as a "bigger" launch game so far.
Its very funny that you list current PS4 games to try to make the list of launch PS5 games better.

If i started to post around how great GoW5 with the 120fps multiplayer looks and plays on the Series S and X as an advert for next gen,i would be shitstormed lol

Wait, series x is already a "success"? Even after the horrendous failure of the last "world's most powerful console", Xbonex, that died after only 2 and a half years on the market?

If Xbonex was selling, there would have been no call to completely discontinue it. PS4 Pro is nearing its 4th year on sale now and Sony didn't stop it simply because they are trying to produce 3 times the amount of PS5 consoles than series s and x combined.

And your title is misleading. Nowhere did they exclusively only mention "series x". There are 2 new consoles they are releasing and its mentioned numerous times as s/x in your article.

@andrewsqual: The X1X is discontinued because it would basically be competing with the Series S which replaces it at similar performance and price point once the Series X releases. Why would you compete with your own product, the Series S is basically an X1X but with an upgraded CPU and SSD, its discontinuation has nothing to do with how well it was selling (and most reports state it was selling quite strongly btw).

@andrewsqual: Microsoft indeed discontinued the Xbox One X as a business move to introduce the Series S...while Sony already told developers not to keep making games for PS4 neither the Pro....lol...might as well discontinue the entire PS4 brand already.

That's the difference, Microsoft making sure gamers have access to all their games they bought and beyond while Sony wants to keep charging you for what is rightfully yours.

That's a blatand lie. Sony always support their consoles for 10 years, other than Microsoft who always abandon them 2 years early already. The only reason Halo is still coming to X1 is that Spencer doesn't look more like the liar he already is, with his "generations are over" promise.

The truth is,Sony stopped making PS4 exclusives while ago and also told ALL 3rd party devs to make sure their games current in development have to be forward compatible

@sladakrobot: You need to do some research before replying to people. The PSP Go isn't a standalone handheld. It was a new version of the PSP, and it's counted as part of the PSP family... which was supported for 10 years. The Vita was supported for 8 years. That's not a huge difference from the PSP lifespan. That's longer than most home console lifespans.

Though exclusives might not be made for ps4, it's far from abandoned. Sony plans to support it for years to come. Do you know what forward compatible means? They even placed a date for when to focus on FC. It means any games that started development after a certain date this year for PS4 must also be designed to run on PS5 hardware. That doesn't mean they're dropping support. They're supporting both systems.

@psychomantisiii: I dont need to do research as i have been live there back then.
PSP Go was pretty much a standalone mobile console(coz it cut the physical ties) which played only digital games and was pretty much dropped very fast after the desaster sales.
I own a PSP and its a great handheld with a great library of localized Jrpgs which is one of my prefered genres.
PSP Vita was abandoned by Sony exactly at the time when Sony said there would be no exclusives for it.The Vita came out dec.2011 and 2015 Sony declared there would be no 1st party games. The fact that the Vita was sold another 4 years long doesnt mean much as Sony didnt made any games for it and the Vita (which i own) got all the years games only from 3rd parties.

Further,i never used the word abandoned in context with the PS4. All i said was that no new exclusives games was started after projects of TLOU2 and Tsushima for the PS4.

@mooglestar: There are way more factors at play that determine what people are buying, one of the biggest for example being what are your friends playing for kids. Exclusives certainly play a part but its not really as big as people like to make it out to be.

You can just look at the numbers for example, even the most popular exclusive games are lucky to be pushing 6 million units on a console with an install base over 110 million. Even if you take some liberties with things like not everyone buys all exclusives or some people are only interested in certain things, there is only so far you can puff out or inflate those numbers and it still wouldn't come close to bridging that 104 million gap.

Exclusive numbers are even so small in most cases, one could very easily argue a game like CoD (with its 10s of millions playerbase size making up a significantly larger portion of that 110 million playerbase) would have a drastically higher impact on drawing users to a specific console simply with their early access DLC offers.

Many Sony exclusives sell over 10 or even 15 million, so please at least stick to the true numbers. That's like 3 times as many as MS's biggest franchises sold this gen btw.

@kraenk12: Kind of averaging it out but there's always going to be a few outliers but even then, the best selling game for PS4 this generation is Spiderman apparently (although some say Uncharted 4) and its still only at 13+ million, a far cry short of the over 110 million playerbase size.

Appears as though roughly 4 titles broke into the double digits so far and they still have a wide margin, 3 titles in the 5-8 million range and then it quickly drops off after that with almost everything else around the 2-3 million range, so the point still stands.

And this had nothing to do with comparing between Xbox or PS4 anyway, but to touch on your point, I would hope that a console whose playerbase is roughly 3 times larger then Xbox, sold 3 times as many copies, thats just common sense math and statistics.

.Note: Uncharted 4 might be the bestselling but everyone is reporting different numbers for Uncharted but they all have the same number for Spiderman, so I took that as more accurate.

@mooglestar:Arent there other promising NEW games MS has in the pipeline which could interest you?

Halo is big but not end of all games :-)

Sales of the Series X is expected to be less vs PS5 anyways as there are PCs as the other plattform on which you can play Gamepass games.

MS will likely use the numbers of subscriptions+hardware sales to measure their success.

But back to your comment,if MS reports strong subs around the time Halo Infinite launches then yeah,an exclusive can/should push the interest of gamers
