Microsoft's HoloLens Coming to E3

Microsoft's plans for E3 are coming into focus.

Microsoft has already teased that its E3 showing this year will be anything but traditional. Now, the company has confirmed that it's bringing its VR/AR headset technology HoloLens to the show.

Writing on the new HoloLens website, Microsoft said: "Holographic computing promises whole new ways for us to create, collaborate, work, and play. We look forward to showing and telling you more at E3, the world's premier trade show for computer and video games and related products."

Microsoft didn't say if HoloLens would make an appearance during Microsoft's E3 briefing itself or if the headset would be usable at the company's booth on the show floor. But both scenarios seems likely.

E3 2015 runs June 16-18 in Los Angeles, though Microsoft's briefing is expected to take place on Monday, June 15. GameSpot will be reporting live from the show all week long.

Microsoft has also launched a new YouTube channel for HoloLens, featuring a handful of videos about the futuristic technology, one of which is embedded above.

Earlier this week at Microsoft's Build conference in San Francisco, the company announced a new HoloLens partnership with game engine giant Unity, which powers titles like HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft and many others.

HoloLens was announced in January during a marquee Microsoft event. Outside of a Minecraft tech demo, though, Microsoft hasn't announced any games for HoloLens. However, this is an area the company is definitely looking at. No third-party games for HoloLens have been announced yet either.

For a closer look at HoloLens, check out GameSpot's image gallery.

I dunno, i see this as yet another shot into a field already being worked on... Once upon a time there was an engineer that came up with multi touch technology, microsoft jumped on the bandwagon and pushed out a multi touch coffee table with a priicetag of nearly 1500 dollars.... now we had a 3d craze... yep that died pretty fast... Nvideas still trying to pass that one off... anyway.. then the Occulus was announced.. innovative as hell and highly anticipated.. then feet got dragged, development ran into bugs then it was sold to Zuckerberg over at Facebook and its future is questionable.. Google glasses is on the way and microsofts holo lense is up also... all i can say is how over priced will this one be?

Not looking forward to it.. Id rather see new technology for PCs so we can get out of this 10 year tech rut.

Again, I say this in short...I do NOT care about HoloLens. All I want to know is...what happened to Microsoft Illumiroom?

In my humble opinion...

Though Im excited about this E3. Ive said it before and will again Im sure, but Im looking forward to being three years into the cycle where the X1 will still be progressing with DX12 W10 and azure in full swing and being purely devoleped for from the ground up. One systems SET architecture will suffer GREATLY. But still this E3 should be good. Not great, but good. IMO

I don't care about this. I don't want to invest my money into another "VirtualBoy-like" unit, that's been done right. I'm over the idea of wanting a "Minority Report / Jarvis-like" PC (although, that would be cool. but nonetheless...)

NO!

What I would LIKE to know...where in the heck is THIS?

<< LINK REMOVED >>

I wanted "Microsoft Illumiroom" ever since it was presented for the world to see. As a gamer with 7.1 surround sound, with speakers so loud I could get evicted. An 85' inch. 4K UHD S9V Series HDTV, and Sony 4K 3D HD Projector, showcased on the a special white painted wall to about 125' inches...I WANT THIS!

I want illumiroom, not this...

Thanks, but no thanks Microsoft. But imo "Illumiroom" > "HoloLens"

@xboticon@blackace: Gee, I didn't know you worked for MS.

Sony lied about PS+ Driveclub, graphics for games, and Vitas.

Many of their exclusives have been let downs as well.

Keep crying.

@xboticon:

Also, if you want to talk about a high price-point and if you are in fact, in favor of Sony..lets go back to the last generation's launch for both companies. Microsoft's Xbox 360 launched with a $400 price tag, while Sony's PS3 launched with a $600 price tag.

Now...to be fair, the Sony PS3 had a built in wireless card, blu-ray player, and a 60 gigabyte hard drive. That alone made its $600 price tag justifiable, especially when you look at what blu-ray players cost at the time and the Xbox 360 had nothing except a 20 gigabyte hdd and a dvd player.

Fast forward into the present...and you have two consoles with similar hardware (with the Xbox One having slightly less power) going for the same price in all scenarios with the Kinect isn't factored in. Add Son'y Playstation 4 camera into the mix, and you are looking at roughly $460 (at launch) for the entire setup..which really only makes it $40 less than its Xbox One counter part...

Also, I own the Sony PS4 Camera and it really doesn't even compare to the Kinect in terms of value and quality...then again, that isn't saying much because the Kinect is underutilized....and I, like many others, are hoping that HoloLens changes that. Someone needs to innovate here and give us, the gamers, something new or fresh...I don't care who does it...as long as it happens.

@xboticon: Your post has fanboy written all over it...

Xbox Ones (without the Kinect) are cheaper in most cases than a PS4 is...

The hardware is inferior, yes, but only slightly.

I don't have any problems out of the Kinect when using it personally, however, I do feel a bit let down by it simply because it isn't a vital part of the console anymore, like they originally promised.

Dev support is actually there now, and it is increasing everyday. In fact, they are currently making it extremely easy for devs to develop on their platform(s), particularly their unpopular Windows Phone.

Lastly...why would you be playing your Xbox One games at work, let alone watching movies on it?

Both consoles are a let down in terms of what was promised upon release so please don't try to single out one over the other. The important thing is, both Microsoft and Sony are taking their gaming platforms in the right direction...at least that is what I think.

To be successfull, this tech need to be affordable to anyone...it shouldnt cost more than $100-150 imo.
I think they could release 2 versions of the Hololens...one which works standalone(expensive) and the other must be conected to a computer or a X1(cheaper version).

@sladakrobot: It will cost more then that I think. Even Sony's Morpheus is rumored to be over $200.

@sladakrobot: I honestly don't see this being in that price range. I think we're looking at a couple hundred bucks, but I agree with your assessment that it would need to be cheap for market appeal. I don't expect much from AR or VR anytime in the near future, it's probably going to end up like Kinect

@northArrow: I remember when Sega back then presented the 3D-Glasses for the Master System.
All the people/press was very impressed and Sega already felt they landed a hit...until Sega unveiled the price.
BAM...fail product.

personally I think ar has more real potential than the current vr tech everyone is working on. Integrate this will kinect and cortana and this could be used for all sorts of games especially rts type games.

@oflow: It will be important that devs/publisher sees the future in it and start to make games for it.

I just hope the glasses have a long battery life. I haven't heard anyone talking about the battery life.
