Microsoft pulls plug on original Xbox support

[UPDATE] Publisher discontinues out-of-warranty repairs on console after 8.5 years; support documentation posted online.

In early 2006, several months after it launched the Xbox 360, Microsoft ceased manufacturing the original Xbox. Today, the company pulled the plug on its first console entirely. The company has officially ended out-of-warranty support for the original Xbox, some eight and a half years after Bill Gates handed out the first device.

No Caption Provided

"On March 2, 2009, service repairs for Original Xbox video game systems for which the Warranty has expired will no longer be available," reads Microsoft's official support site. "Any other technical support, documents, and content, however, will continue to be available to all our customers. Although Microsoft is ending repair services for the Original Xbox, an upgrade program and support will be maintained for Original Xbox consoles that are still under Warranty."

To help offset the end of out-of-warranty support, Microsoft also said that, as of today, a trove of documentation, ranging from troubleshooting to configuration documents, would be available through its Web site. The console maker also noted that original Xbox owners who require a repair that is covered by a warranty can request an upgrade to Microsoft's current-generation console, the Xbox 360.

[UPDATE] Responding to GameSpot's requests for comment, a Microsoft representative provided more color on the new in-warranty upgrade policy announced yesterday. "Xbox consoles that are still in-warranty and require a repair will be upgraded to a Factory Certified Repaired Xbox 360 Pro SKU," the representative said. "There is no fee associated with the upgrade."

During its four-and-a-half-year run, Microsoft sold approximately 25 million units of its first foray into gaming consoles, a figure that was surpassed by the Xbox 360 in November.

I'm glad you guys haven't given up the last generation console war yet. The XBOX original was a great console, it just didn't have enough new games to keep it going as long as the PS2.

I am a gamer, and I owned both a ps2 and Xbox 1 last gen, and I must say, in comparison with the Xbox 1 the ps2 is a pile of crap.

It had to happen sometime. Unlike the PS2, the original Xbox quickly faded into oblivion when the current generation came around. Kinda weird, because I think the Xbox actually had more capabilities than the PS2 did...yet theyre still producing new PS2 games and Sony supports it. (Of course, the lack of interest in the PS3 after two years probably has played a role in that).

Free upgrade...IF it requires a repair, and IF it is still covered by warranty. MS isn't dumb enough to just give a 360 Pro to anyone who wants to get rid of an Xbox.

I agree Wings 008, compared to the orignal Xbox, the ps2 was nothing short of a pile of crap.

While the upgrade policy is very cool for those in the stone age, those of us with Xbox 360's mourn the loss of original Xbox game support. I have a half dozen unsupported Xbox games.

What we really need, instead of technical documents, is an Xbox emulator for the PC, so our expensive collections of games don't become worthless the moment our consoles break.

Kratos_OMEGA, thats the thing, the xbox was the better console hardware wise of the last gen, but sony had the upper hand with all the companys making games for it constanly. now ms have the upper hand this generation with more exclusives. if anything the best last gen console was hands down the gamecube. it was far better than the ps2 and had better games.

Ah, the xbox the console that revived my interest in videogames. It had the power to produce decent ports of pc shooters that i wanted to play. Doom3, half life 2, fable. My work colleagues told me not to buy it, told me it looks like a brick and instead buy a ps2. I am so glad i didn't listen to any of them. Had mine 5 years before selling it not one problem. Such a shame it didn't sell more units great console.

Ah, the nostalgia. I would imagine my Xbox is on it's last legs, but considering the hours I spent on Kotor, Morrowind, and Fable, I've had fantastic value for money from it. .. Would be nice if the 360 had 100% compatability though. I have a large pile of games I would like to keep playing if it does stop working.

Gotta understand people that the Xbox 360 was a far more bleeding-edge piece of technology when it was released, hence the overheating bugs. Whereas the Xbox Original was made up from tried and tested PC components. So go figure the Original Xbox was more solid from the start. However to be honest, I'm still on my first Xbox which i bought last year, and it's being a complete stable rock for me. It doesn't get too hot, it's quieter than the first-batch 360s too. They fixed the problems and everyone who had a bugged console have been helped out by MS without a quarrel. So that's fair kudos to MS for realising their newer product's teething issues. However Sony had similar failure rates with their PS2 (and still do) regarding disk read errors and RRoD style deaths. They were forced into a lawsuit and only then supported customers with dying PS2s...for as short a period as possible and then dropped all support again. Compared to other console makers, at least MS provides good customer service.

everyone says that there wasnt problems with the xbox, but i seem to recall alot of xboxs catching fire, and they sent new cords or something, not to mention that the 2 people i knew that had the first xbox had trouble with it. both xboxs are crap systems, but had good games. i would have to say that nintendo is the only company that has proved that can build a console that will last, my nes and Snes still runs, not to mention my origianl gameboy from 1987. try and say that microsoft owners

Ironic that the original Xbox was one of the most well built consoles ever and the 360 is not.

It's no surprise many of you are reporting no problems with your XBOX. IMO, N64 and XBOX are the most well-built consoles ever. They opted for heavy high-grade plastic for the shell. Aside from the air ducts, the shell was tight shut, can't even stick a paper between the cracks. All the components inside were tightly fastened and of high-quality. XBOX and N64 failures were unheard of. You can try to shake the system but you won't get a rattle. 360 shell material is a joke, especially the gray parts on the top and bottom of the console and the face plate. I still remember that incident when a guy shot his 9mm pistol at his roommate's XBOX because they were playing loud. The bullet ricocheted and the shell was undamaged but the system died from the shock.

Isn't it funny that the Xbox, despite its age pumps out consistenly better graphics than the crappy Wii? Pitch Black, Ninja Gaiden Fable, Oddworld..the list goes on and on. And a superior hard drive might I add.
