Microsoft: Next-gen console sales could hit 1 billion

Xbox maker believes non-gaming entertainment capabilities of next-generation consoles can lead to record sales.

Microsoft believes next-generation consoles will sell over 1 billion units and aims to elevate the long-running Xbox 360 to 100 million sold in the next five years.

No Caption Provided

Speaking with OXM, Microsoft senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi claimed the consoles' deep media opportunities will lead to record industry sales.

"Every generation, as you've probably heard, has grown approximately 30 percent," Mehdi said. "So this generation is about 300 million units. Most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400 million units. That's if it's a game console, over the next decade."

"We think you can go broader than a game console, that's our aim, and you can go from 400 million to potentially upwards of a billion units," he added. "That's how we're thinking of the Xbox opportunity as we go forward."

Speaking specifically about the Xbox 360, Mehdi said he is hopeful that the aging platform can reach 100 million units sold in the next five years. Sales currently stand at 77 million. He explained that Microsoft has a number of ideas in mind to go about achieving the milestone, one of which is "new price points."

"We believe over the next five years we can break a 100 million unit installed base," Medhi said. "That's something we're shooting for; it's not a financial plan as such, it's just rough numbers if you will. To sell another 25 million, half of those will probably come from replacements, but half will come from new buyers."

"And the way we'll break into those segments is by hitting new price points, getting new classes of entertainment to come with the Xbox, and breaking into new customer segments," he added. "So you'll see the Xbox 360 continue to exist, even as we launch the next generation Xbox One."

Microsoft Game Studios executive Phil Spencer said earlier this week that the Xbox 360 will be "very vibrant" for years to come and even teased a "huge" announcement for the platform to be made next month at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo.

"I think the [Xbox 360] is going to be very vibrant for many years. In fact, we have a huge, I think it's huge, [Xbox 360] announcement for E3 that I keep wanting to talk about, but I can't," Spencer said. "I think it will surprise people. I loved what we did last year with Minecraft; bring Minecraft to the box; six million units later it's kind of a beast. I think there's a lot of life in the [Xbox 360] for years to come."

Nintendo's Wii U launched last year and has sold 3.45 million units to date. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are due to launch later this year. Neither company has provided sales forecasts for either device yet.

@andrescapo_ @blackace The console will still sell millions, because there are millions of gamers who aren't educated on what's happening at the reveal or the E3. Many will buy it for the games alone. It'll still sell. We still don't have all the info on the PS4, anything can happen. You numbers are completely unrealistic at this stage. People thought the PS3 was a shitty console at first too. Same with the Wii, until it launched. Kinect was shitty to, yet sold millions. So... calling a console shitty is meaningless.

@andrescapo_ @blackace Your %'s aren't even close to what they will be. Just random numbers pull out of thin air. A very wild guess at best.

I have faith in the X1, but 1 billion units is a lot. They are really banking on non-traditional gamers purchasing this console.

Based on what they've revealed so far, they are banking on only the non-traditional gamers, if even them.

@Gamer_4_Fun They are out of their minds. The Ps2 was out for over 15 years and has just passed 155 million. The XBox One will be lucky to sell as many units as the XBox 360 if they keep all the policies the way they are. Even combined with the PS4, Wii U and XBox One, they won't even break 500 million. Idiots.

@blackace I am saying the exact same thing, if they reach 360 sale target within 5 years, I would say they should be really proud of themselves. But from 75 million to 1 billion, that's just crazy talk.

Right... Even if people who don't want a games console decide "lets get a games console for that blu-ray drive and netflix" what are the chances they wont go for a cheaper PS3 instead?

Even then, there's no console gonna sell 1 billion units, unless the XBone is going for the record in breakdowns... Here they've even forgotten that a large chunk of current gen sales are people buying more than 1 console and having them break down.

I think Microshaft need Bill back, whoever they have now has lost the plot.

You buffoons. One of the hottest selling multi-media devices, the iPod, in it's life time of iterations has just barely broken 400 million units. You think your home gaming device with a much higher price point is going to break a BILLION?!

first of all the new xbox looks crap. it will keep spying on people 100 percent of times, people will be afraid to be in the same room with the console unless they are specifically using it....second of all, those people must be high or retarded, Xbox 360 reached 77 milion in 8 years, and they think the next console will reach 400-1000 ?! talk about unreasonable expectations, its crazier then TR selling 3.6 milions in one month and still not hitting targer, corporate executives are going forward with unrealistic targets to attract more and more investors...

@timdogg42069 Actually... That'd probably be the only thing that would help Microsoft right now.

Don't get me wrong. Xbox One is a mess of corporate greed... but so is a $1000 price point. Pretty sure that would be suicide for any console maker. I get the point you're trying to make though :P

So many posts of people upset over needing to connect to the internet to use the xbox one. The main reason for this is that people who don't have regular access will not be able to play.

So why do most people not have internet access. Usually because they can not afford it. If you can't afford an internet connection (I hope one day you can) then you are not in the target demographic of MS. I know it might be a little hurtful to hear that, but it is just reality. If they based a business model around selling a $400+ machine with $60 games to people that can not afford $50/month for an internet connection, they would fail quite quickly. They have identified the market they need to target and they are going after them. I know there are some people that don't fall into this category (soldiers stationed oversears, for example. and MS even announced that they have something lined up for them) but if you are, then sadly you are screwed.

Also, MS being all about the money. It's a multibillion dollar company listed on the stock market and they have investors to answer to. So yes, obviously, it is all about the money.

I want ALL future gaming systems to be successful. I really hope that Wii U, PS 4, and Xbox one do well.

@stevenrkorea I can afford to pay for high speed internet and play video games but i choose not to buy an xbox one because of this. I don't like having to count on a service to be able to play something that I payed for and should own.

@stevenrkorea The"target demographic" is SUPPOSED to be video gamers seeing as the xbox is a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. Its not that people can't afford it(granted some people have other priorities), some just dont really want it or have a need for it. Doing something smart business wise would be to INCLUDE people who either don't have internet or have a good internet connection. You want to know WHY thats good? Because it makes MORE money. Its stupid and shooting themselves in the foot leaving out potential millions in sales

Its the same as abercrombie and fitch not wanting "ugly people" or "fat people" to buy their clothes because their demographic is "thin and beautiful" people. They're losing money based off that alone. Microsoft would be the same
