Microsoft: Next-gen console sales could hit 1 billion

Xbox maker believes non-gaming entertainment capabilities of next-generation consoles can lead to record sales.

Microsoft believes next-generation consoles will sell over 1 billion units and aims to elevate the long-running Xbox 360 to 100 million sold in the next five years.

No Caption Provided

Speaking with OXM, Microsoft senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi claimed the consoles' deep media opportunities will lead to record industry sales.

"Every generation, as you've probably heard, has grown approximately 30 percent," Mehdi said. "So this generation is about 300 million units. Most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400 million units. That's if it's a game console, over the next decade."

"We think you can go broader than a game console, that's our aim, and you can go from 400 million to potentially upwards of a billion units," he added. "That's how we're thinking of the Xbox opportunity as we go forward."

Speaking specifically about the Xbox 360, Mehdi said he is hopeful that the aging platform can reach 100 million units sold in the next five years. Sales currently stand at 77 million. He explained that Microsoft has a number of ideas in mind to go about achieving the milestone, one of which is "new price points."

"We believe over the next five years we can break a 100 million unit installed base," Medhi said. "That's something we're shooting for; it's not a financial plan as such, it's just rough numbers if you will. To sell another 25 million, half of those will probably come from replacements, but half will come from new buyers."

"And the way we'll break into those segments is by hitting new price points, getting new classes of entertainment to come with the Xbox, and breaking into new customer segments," he added. "So you'll see the Xbox 360 continue to exist, even as we launch the next generation Xbox One."

Microsoft Game Studios executive Phil Spencer said earlier this week that the Xbox 360 will be "very vibrant" for years to come and even teased a "huge" announcement for the platform to be made next month at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo.

"I think the [Xbox 360] is going to be very vibrant for many years. In fact, we have a huge, I think it's huge, [Xbox 360] announcement for E3 that I keep wanting to talk about, but I can't," Spencer said. "I think it will surprise people. I loved what we did last year with Minecraft; bring Minecraft to the box; six million units later it's kind of a beast. I think there's a lot of life in the [Xbox 360] for years to come."

Nintendo's Wii U launched last year and has sold 3.45 million units to date. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are due to launch later this year. Neither company has provided sales forecasts for either device yet.

I live in the U.S and I know that I'll be switching from Xbox to Playstaion this next gen.

I would say that the PS4 is probably going to take around 60% of the sales in the U.S. for the next gen when compared to Xbox One.

Outside of the U.S. the sales will probably be something like 10 to 1 in favor of the PS4.

@TruthSerum808 yeah, and add to it the fact that Non-US persons don't give a flying **** about the Smart-XBOXTV bullcrap. I for one don't have a cable subscription, and never will. Except, well, when i get my own place. And even so. The only thing that'll matter is probably sports and Netflix. I don't see portuguese folks shifting from MEO to GAYBOX (i feel like a rageboy now). Micropenis will need a LOT of marketing to promote the non-gaming XBOX content, and by a LOT i mean, millions of dollars of marketing investment.

If this console even sells more than 10 million, I'll be shocked.

And can we stop pretending the Wii U should be considered a part of this "Next Gen" console battle. It's really not next gen.

Not that even if you did consider it next gen would it help much in reaching that 1 billion mark ;) 3 million? just 997 million for sony and m$ to pick up then I guess.

Think about ''smart'' phones. They are in fact the most gimmicky, cheap, sheep herding tools ever created which is why they sell so fucking much of them. The best people to market to if you only care about the money are those sheep. Microsoft with the new Xbox is aiming exactly for that. They want to cater to those who think Angry birds is the same thing as Call of duty and Call of duty the same as let's say the MGS series.

It is an insult to all the gamers out there, but I can't say I really care because Microsoft has been insulting people since the first Crapbox which I desperately tried to like. The only thing I care for is that Sony has competition so that it doesn't lower its standards. The fact that Microsoft simply stopped caring about video games leaves me a bit worried about the future of Playstation. On the other hand, Sony hasn't gotten much competition in the past few years and still keeps doing the exact opposite of everyone else and just keep giving more and more.

Gaming as a media only has room to grow. All the peripherals that they support won't make gaming reach a larger audience; the better games get and the more accessible games get will make gaming reach a larger audience. People who want a home theater system won't buy an xbox they'll buy a home theater system and if companies keep getting side tracked into making these "all in one" consoles instead of making good gaming consoles people who want a quality gaming experience will turn to PCs.

Then again idk what I'm talking about, I have yet to see how well the xbox1 is going to do.

I hope there big announcement for the Xbox 360 is that there dropping the price to $99 without a contract fee and a sizable hard drive because if that's the case I'll be buying one as all I have is the original Xbox 360 pro model with the 20 GB hard drive and would like to upgrade.

Unfortunately, knowing gamers they probably will hit their projected sales, and exceed. At least I can sleep well knowing my dollar won't contribute to this nonsense they call the future of gaming.

Their course of action is strange to me seeing as how a normal person seeking to browse the web, skype, etc would just buy a netbook. Most of the people I know couldn't care less about video games, they'd never buy a console even if it had those other features.

that is because people need to buy multiple consoles because yours break so easily with inferior product inside.

Yes, because it's so very essential that I can instantly switch between a movie, my music, and a game. Oh, and it's exceedingly helpful to open Internet Explorer while watching Star Trek. Yup. This guy needs to go HOME! *moves arms*

This is the LAME and ABSURD vision that has led them down this dark road to begin with. When are they going to FIRE the idiot who projected these statistics? Clearly they saw the backlash they received and are in the process of damage control, but they are not even considering to rethink their strategy. That's the same dumb philosophy that cost Custer his life. RETHINK YOUR PLAN MICROSOFT BECAUSE "PLAN A" ISN'T WORKING

No, no, no. Its Microsoft will "lose" over 1 billion "dollars". Mostly due to hardware failures and software bricking.

The only logical reason I could see for Xbox One sales hitting one billion is the fact that the 500 GB hard drive cannot be swapped out and therefor cannot be replaced by the owner if it goes bad.

@cursealoud @J4m3sR4n0r72 Even still that's an insane statement. This gen has sold what maybe quarter of that amount between all 3 console makers? To say that this gen is somehow going to quadruple an already pretty large number is insane. Especially based on the assumption that the non-gaming related stuff is somehow going to be what does it in a world where we already have have 2-3 things in the house that can do those things already. I just don't see people who have no interest in games and no kids flocking to stores to pick up the new 400-500 dollar xbox/PS4, both machines known for GAMING and not a media consumption device.

My claim has just as much merit as what Microsoft said.

@The__Kraken But what with the market for alternative fuel sources, your business plan could actually be quite lucrative if you incorporate the faecal matter of others. So I'd say it actually has more merit if anything.
