Microsoft Is Expecting Huge Xbox One Sales This Holiday--Here's Why

Microsoft has high hopes for the Xbox One this holiday.

The Xbox One may be trailing behind the PlayStation 4 in the current-generation sales race, but Microsoft has high hopes for its console this holiday. Speaking with GameSpot this week at E3 2015, Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg said a string of blockbuster exclusive games and new backward compatibility functionality will lead to a "massive migration" of Xbox 360 owners moving to Xbox One.

No Caption Provided

"A lot of people have been waiting for the next Halo; a lot of people have been waiting for Gears; a lot of people have been waiting for backwards compatibility," Greenberg said.

Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, and backward compatibility will all be available on Xbox One before the end of the year.

"And so we think having all of that coming this holiday; we expect we're going to see a massive migration," he added. "We expect millions of Xbox 360 owners to migrate and move to Xbox One. We see that the majority of people who buy an Xbox One today own an Xbox 360. So our fanbase has stayed very loyal. And frankly, they're waiting for those new releases to come this year."

Greenberg stressed that you should not underestimate how pivotal backwards compatibility will be in encouraging people to upgrade from an Xbox 360 to an Xbox One.

I for one am happy about backwards compatibility. i still have my 360 hooked up, but just having it all on one is just more convenient. i've read for the past year how pissed people that consoles weren't BC. i wasn't angry, just shrugged my shoulders and said, ok, like the old days. whatever. also yes people who have entertainment centers don't want tons of stuff hooked up. like every online personality i follow has complained about not being able to do this or that. hbo go wasn't on xbox one or ps4 for a while, ""omg i still need my stupid 360 hooked up, so annoying"." i want to play ps1 classics and other psn games on my ps4 but only on ps3 i don't want to hook it up, UGHH". "why can't i play my old games just on my 360 and ps3, i unplugged those things, so unfair, damn it all to hell". these are the things i hear. i'm a console gamer but if these things bother you this much, you should be a pc gamer

This seems pretty pointless. People with an Xbox 360 and games can already play those games. It shouldn't really factor into buying an Xbone. Were they really put off before because they didn't want to have one more thing plugged in? Because that's what this hinges on; have a PS3 and PS4 plugged in and play both systems' libraries or just have an Xbone plugged in and play some of the 360's library as well. The only difference is needing that one more plug socket taken up.

Given how badly the Xbone is selling in every country outside of North America, I don't think it really came down to freeing up that extra socket.

@ManjiSTP: you have no idea how mad people get that they can't play something because they put their old consoles away. i remember with hbo go in the past, or ps1 classics.

@ManjiSTP: I have an Xbox One but no Xbox 360, so this is huge for me. Immediately it adds hundreds (if not 1,000 by the time they're done) of new games for me to buy at bargain-bin prices. It doubles the number of Games with Gold titles I know get, from 2 per month to 4 per month, and gives me an opportunity to play some classic games from the 7th generation that I missed out on. This is huge.

@ManjiSTP: You're a sad little fanBOY, you can't see past your own nose. I have over 150 360 games and moved on to the X1. You think I want my house to look like your trailer ? With 2 consoles, wires, controllers and games everywhere, when I could have everything neatly in one place and using the same controller. You can't see the forest for the trees. That's just one reason BC is good, grow up.

@vegasdog: It's funny how you're flaming everyone commenting on this article for being fanboys whilst you - in the same breath - defend and promote X1.

The OP makes a valid point. Backwards compatibility is convenient but it is hardly a deal breaker. Microsoft expected huge sustained sales at launch for the X1 as well. Did that happen? You seem to have a low IQ so let me tell you: No it didn't. Will it happen this holiday season? Maybe, maybe not. But a FACT is it'll have to sell millions more than the PS4 to make up ground - which is unlikely.

@vegasdog: No I actually didn't. It is a common defense in court, particularly criminal law, for a party to refute a counterargument by making the claim that the opposite party misunderstood its statement because the return-argument refuted all they said.

Not that I think you have the knowledge, education and/or street sense to use court practices on a gaming site - the method is used by idiots as well.

You can keep going for as long as you want - I've destroyed people in debating circles since I was twelve.

The more you reply, the more apparent it is that you are either a pubescent teenager and/or a moron.

Depends on how extensive this backwards compatibility will be. It did get me a lot more interested in the Xbox One.

I mean, I went from having zero interest to taking a wait and see approach to X1. If that bc list gets anywhere close to the full 360 library, I'll definitely get one.

I think backward compatibility is a great decision. It will be money well spent. I know of a lot of gamers that are going to upgrade due to this feature. They also have over 5 exclusive games coming this holiday! It is a great time to go ahead and make the jump to the Xbox1!

Microsoft is going to eat sony alive this holiday season haha. Sony seriously letting halo go without competition bad mistake. Halo will sell millions of xboxones and is one of the most preordered games of this year. Plus rise of tomb raider and gears ultimate edition should do some extra damage. I forgot to mention you can now play games you own from you xbox 360 for free without 15 dollar subscription. Fable legends a free game that looks amazing. The final nail in the coffin fallout 4 with mods. Bethesda said sony fans can expect mods sometime after 2017 goodluck with that microsft been working with pc a very long time. Did I mention microsoft designs pcs and windows haha? Dont know if sony will ever get mods to work on ps4. Come and join the winning side the xboxone. Battlefront is also coming to xboxone another reason to jump ship.

@slayer0066: Your rant humored me. Apart from stating the obvious (Microsoft being the creator of Windows), you argument is based on bias and fortune-telling. It's just a pity hard stats trump bias and fortune-telling isn't real.

Here's some hard facts for you:

Sales for PS4: 22.7 million.

Sales for X1: 12.6 million.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, chum.

@vegasdog: That's quite a statement. Do you know me? Do you know where I live? No? Thought so.

Not that it matters to an idiot like you, but I graduated top of my year out of 388 students. I'm not talking about secondary school by the way, I'm talking about university. University is a place where you go to (if you're smart enough) after school to get a degree (a piece of paper that states you are qualified in a particular subject).

@vegasdog: Yes that's it, revert to base insults because you've been bettered in logical debate. Why don't you try to make a constructive argument? Oh sorry, I sometimes forget fifteen-year-olds lack both maturity and the ability to debate logically.

As I said in an earlier post, you flame everyone on this thread for being a fanboy, whilst you openly defend and promote the X1. It is not irony (irony is a literary term that is misused 90% of the time) - it's an amalgamation of stupidity and paradox.

@ncrase25: Not exactly, just 125 million free accounts created over 12 years. Let's put aside the fact that a high percentage of those will be created by spammers and people selling Steam keys (causing Steam to introduce that $5 limit on account functionality), of course you'll get more free accounts created over 12 years than £300-400 consoles sold in 18 months. Is that really something you're proud of? Imagine if a console was free but a Steam account cost £300.

It's more meaningful to look at how many of those users are actually buying games. Of those 125 million accounts, only 500,000 bought The Witcher 3, a massively hyped and critically acclaimed game that's been promoted on the store front of Steam for months now. The same game sold almost 1.5 million on each console despite having supposedly less users.

MS better come through with ALL the game everyone wants to be BC on Xbox1. This better not be some shenanigans where they say it's BC at E3 to get some hype going for sales... but many good games everyone wants like RDR doesn't get approved for BC. If that's the case most gamers will 100% tell MS to GTFO as far as their gaming dollars go. Gotta be able to trust these companies.

@ohjtbehaaave: I guess you're slow in the head and didn't catch what MS said at E3. It's up to the Devs to make a 360 game backward compatible. All the Devs have to do is give there ok n MS will handle the rest.

@detroitking02: That's the point though. MS shouldn't announce BC until you have a ton of TOP games locked up for BC like RDR.... not these lame games they've listed. It's like Rock Band teasing their could be Led Zeppelin songs for their new game... but they know in reality that Zeppelin won't give permission to use them.

The point is BC is nice.... but don't go running out trading in your 360 for an Xbox1 until you see an official list of BC games... that gamers CARE about.

@ohjtbehaaave: dude you really dont listen do you? the small list they have? is for preview members to test its not what they are actually releasing with. Their actual list is going to include over a 100 games. Do you think that image of all those games were chosen at random? they were already picked out borderlands, mass effect, prefect dark zero and more. So yes they have a ton of games locked in they've said this. In addition to this they have opens up polls to have people vote on what they want.

@ohjtbehaaave: IF RDR doesn't get allowed for BC it wont be from a lack of trying on MS's part, but what you don't realise is, it will be up to R* to give it the go ahead or not. So IF it doesn't happen then gamers should be unhappy with R* not MS, and it could turn out to be bad PR for R* if they don't.

Ubisoft and Bethesda have given the go ahead already, and I would expect more to jump on board otherwise it will look bad in the eyes of gamers, but having said that EA & Activision will be the hardest to convince because all those 2 companies care about are profits, profits and more profits, but I guess time will tell.

It will be interesting to see if Xbox One can make any significant progress on the Playstation 4 this year. I really suspect it's going to be difficult for them to do so. Even in recent months, they've not been able to sell more consoles. And they've been $50 less than PS4 since the beginning of the year!

Is backwards compatibility really a selling point for the system at this stage? Seriously? If it was FULL LIBRARY backwards compatibility, sure. But, it's hardly something that 360 owners look at and go "Yeah, I can sell my 360 or trade up to the One because I'll be able to play all my games". Only the uninformed would go in with that mindset. It's always going to be hit and miss whether a person's individual library is going to be supported. Because it's going to be only a subset of games that will be supported via backwards compatibility.

@otterbee: people have been blinded by Sony and their past.

I find it absolutely ridiculous to see the level of expectations that people have from Microsoft for them to come through and compete (and win their hearts) against Sony.

Microsoft's console is full of options. Offers a variety of activities and people still find ressons to dismiss their offering. At this point, even Sony should be dumbfounded on why they are still able to hold people's wallets and opinion in their favour.

As for people, you all need to be realistic. Microsoft is not a Not-for-profit organization. While they need to make sure that their target market gets what they want without creating any ill will... anything they do, has to be in the favour of their shareholders at the end. Otherwise they won't be seen as a valuable investment. Same also holds true for Sony.

With that said, their product should looks solid to any person viewing their offering. Whether you see it valuable for your self or not, you still need to be objective. If you are not bias then I don't understand how you can dismiss the advantages of their product. The reason I believe the term "fanboy" is coined is because there are those people who do exactly just that, and express bias with nothing concrete to support while dismissing the achievements of the competing product.

Regardless of what Microsoft management stood for in 2013, the current management on 2015 couldn't be anymore different. If anyone has problems with their current product, then they honestly need to clean their glasses and see clarity in who is offering what at this point.

THIS IS NOT TRUE BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY!!!!BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY IS NOT HERE YET AND WHEN IT IS IT WILL BE LIKE 1 GAME A MONTH, THATS NOT TRUE BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY YOU CROOKS!!

if you want to be competitive with $ony

full backward compatible with xbox 360 and xbla games (not in monthy installmants)

A MICROSOFT EXCLUSIVE like, no game will have DLC, or all games will have free DLC, preferably all games will be physical. This can be YOUR thing and make YOU unique.

unrestricted communication between 360 and xbox one both ways.

one operating system

dedicated physical servers, not fake cloud servers.

dvr and video editing all done on the hard drive on the console and not on the cloud :/

360 controllers backward compatible including arcade sticks for the fighters and steering wheels for all the rev heads.

more transparency, lobbys for EVERY game so gamers can find a good internet connection and connect with locals and maybe even make friends! more information for multiplayer games ESPECIALLY PINGS for EVERY game, where the players are, what games they are playing, actual numbers of who is playing what and where all in real time.

Then you will be back in the race, then you will have sony actually caring.

because at this stage, your just another console, and a data hugry one at that.

@hotwog21: you are clearly touched in the head if you think physical servers should be considered a priority over virtual servers.

It's like me claiming that those boxed cars from 60s should be the focus and not the sleek looking new ones.

Go do some research to get with the times, instead of spouting nonsense here.

You do not understand how backwards compatibility and emulation works so stop posting about it or at the very least educate yourself on the subject before posting rants over and over again. What a crappy launch line up of BC games. Those 3rd party publishers aren't just going to allow their games to be played for free without the right sum of money. They'd rather release remasters and bank on those.

@hard_serpent: So you've seen the list of over 100 games that will be available at launch have you? of course not, you're just commenting on the 20 or so that's in the preview program at the moment, show some intelligence and wait until the full list is revealed then make a smug comment if it warrants one.

Think about this, how many people who say have both the XB1 & PS4 who are buying Rainbow Six Siege for example, but are not sure which console to buy it on, now decide to buy it on the XB1 because they will be getting 3 games instead of just the 1 on the PS4. The same can be said for Fallout 4, but i guess you didn't think about a scenario like that now did you?

Also there are a LOT of people who haven't bought either next gen console yet, so MS could sway people over to the XB1 when you can buy a game and get previous game(s) from the series included. People (not fanboys) always go with what's better value at the time, that's why Sony has sold so many PS4's so far, and i see this hurting Sony in the long run.

@i_p_daily: You're right I am commenting on the 20 launch games.Thats exactly what my first sentence said. You can read but not comprehend apparently. You just got offended and went on a little tyrade of speculation trying to make this "BC" look like the trump card that will overtake the PS4 as the number 1 console worldwide.

@hard_serpent: But it will launch with over 100 games not 20, they are the games that are available at the moment in the preview program, which is a beta program. it hasn't launched to the public as a whole yet, it will LAUNCH with over 100 games and that's the part I was talking about.

You're a fanboy of the PS4 I get that, but nowhere did I say the XB1 would take over your favourite piece of plastic as the no1 console worldwide now did I? I did say it would hurt Sony in the end. If you think this is not a big thing as a gamer, well then you're as arrogant as Sony is at the moment. As for me I don't care which console sells the most, I never have and never will, as I'm an adult who has other things to worry about then kiddy crap like that.

Try to answer this as a gamer, and not a fanboy. Do you think most gamers will buy a game that has 2 free games that comes with the main game over a game that just has the main game for the same price?
