Microsoft Is Expecting Huge Xbox One Sales This Holiday--Here's Why

Microsoft has high hopes for the Xbox One this holiday.

The Xbox One may be trailing behind the PlayStation 4 in the current-generation sales race, but Microsoft has high hopes for its console this holiday. Speaking with GameSpot this week at E3 2015, Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg said a string of blockbuster exclusive games and new backward compatibility functionality will lead to a "massive migration" of Xbox 360 owners moving to Xbox One.

No Caption Provided

"A lot of people have been waiting for the next Halo; a lot of people have been waiting for Gears; a lot of people have been waiting for backwards compatibility," Greenberg said.

Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, and backward compatibility will all be available on Xbox One before the end of the year.

"And so we think having all of that coming this holiday; we expect we're going to see a massive migration," he added. "We expect millions of Xbox 360 owners to migrate and move to Xbox One. We see that the majority of people who buy an Xbox One today own an Xbox 360. So our fanbase has stayed very loyal. And frankly, they're waiting for those new releases to come this year."

Greenberg stressed that you should not underestimate how pivotal backwards compatibility will be in encouraging people to upgrade from an Xbox 360 to an Xbox One.

Microsoft's B/C system is all operating on a very strict, very limited PER GAME approval system. So many people have convinced themselves that this will quickly open the entire Xbox 360 library, when in fact it's going to be an extremely slow trickle that will take several years to fill out, if ever. You might never see that handful of 360 games you really want to have emulated on XB1. That's the reality of this scenario - don't try to convince yourself otherwise.

It's Microsoft's backwards compatibility program and emulator, but they don't own the rights to third-party publisher's games. Per game approval, very slow trickle, disappointing amount of support. Stop spreading this distorted perception of the situation and giving Microsoft free PR; it's obviously a cool 'concept' in theory, but it's still super limited. If you're babbling to comments and friends about being able to play all your favorite 360 discs and downloads on Xbox One in the very near future, you're pipe dreaming, and getting PR trolled... hard.

Damage control if I ever seen it. Shut up! By the time that B/C is released there will be over 100 games for it and Phil Spencer already said that the process is simple and that the only thing standing in their way would be permission. It will take time to amass a huge library of 360 games on the XBO but the way you make it seem is ridiculous.

@slim70: Shut up? I bet you were really fun on the debate club in High School! It's not "damage control" I STILL have OG Xbox games that never made it to the list of supported games on the 360. It's going to be LIMITED. #DEALWITHIT

Hardly anyone will give that permission without a payday no matter how simple it is.

A)So either MS has to pay it(highly doubtful).

B)Gamers have to pay for it(They haven't talked about cost as far as I know)

If neither A or B happens, you get the slow trickle of backwards compatibility just like the 360 had.

@slim70 No it's not that easy, which is why they have people voting what games are getting BC, if it was so easy they would just be bringing them to X1 in bundles.

@mkeezay22@Sandpark: Well, firstly we can obviously only base this on what we are told, which is that the only barrier to entry is the permission of the publisher, and that it is just a case of "flicking the switch" afterwards, anything else is speculation from either side. The vote is just a gauge of popularity and probably something they will use to try and sway publishers decisions "look, they REALLY want to play your game". I mean, obviously we will never see anything that has a HD remaster made or on the way, but they have already said that they are going to try and make it so you will be able to purchase the B/C titles digitally on XB1 anyway, so that would be an additional revenue stream for the publisher for something they had probably written off by now anyway.

@runstalker: Xbox supporters just want to believe. It's their way of justifying something. They can't just be happy about their system. They come here with the need to justify their purchase by trying to tear down the competition. It's sad, really.

@yukushi: it is always better to have options than none. We may prefer a certain platform, but that is not the reason to hate the features that others have. I prefer the XB1 platform, but I own a ps4 for the exclusives. I still have my xbox360 because i still have some unfinished games. A lot of my friends moved from 360 to ps4 due to the initial bad PR MS created. But the new polcies and updates and the more first party exclusives they have been moving back to the xbox.

@yukushi: Gears probably won't be supported since MS is releasing a remaster. And that will be available on PC. Along with Killer Instinct. It sounds like MS will be bringing all of the Xbox games to Windows 10.

@Lacerz: Exactly. Phil Spencer himself said "Dont rule out more Halo on the Windows platform". And we have others here who are still thinking that even though MS is bringing Gears 1 remaster to PC, they have no plans to do the same with Gears 4! LOL. Delusional.

Obviously I can't talk for anybody else but as far as my friends and myself are concerned, it means moving away from both of those consoles altogether in favour of a PC.

I don't see a bright future for consoles any more, at least not in their current state. Shows how much things have changed when the Wii U appears as the more consumer friendly of those three.

I doubt that as in distrust MS. Id bet more ppl feel disheartened more so from Sony than Mas. But admitting such would make them feel foolish and had, which is why Sony will keep mounting all you poor saps. As for COD? That game is trash now. MS sees it, most of the ppl I play shooters with stopped playing after BO II. Why throw money at a dying franchise. Yes it still sells millions, but thats dimenishing with every future looking take on the brand. You could rerelease COD MW 2 and would sell more than the latest versions.

Of course, hungry sex-starved men started another console war.

Backwards compatibility just doesn't sound great any more considering how many games from the PS3/X360 era are being re-mastered. Halo, Uncharted, Devil May Cry, Sleeping Dogs, Metro 2033, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, Gear Of War, God Of War 3, etc. With all these remasters of the biggest names, what's the point? I'm done with last generation.

With Halo 5, Rise Of The Tomb Raider, the remastered Gears and more, they have a great line-up that should allow them to beat Sony this holiday season. I still think a lot of people, including the supposed Xbox "die-hards" here, don't trust Microsoft.

I do have to question why Microsoft would give up their Call Of Duty DLC exclusivity to Sony.

@brian_ghattas: You maybe ready to move on from the last generation consoles, but we dont know if you are part of the majority or minority. Not all games are being remastered, so this bc feature may persuade the ones who have not upgraded yet. For the ones who own an xb1 already, the BC is a feature that they can ignore or use.

Services like PS Now just show that playing previous gen games is not a thing of the past at least not yet.

@slim70: Not ONE single game that LacerZ listed is an "indie". Troll harder next time. Oh, and ALL of the ones he listed are coming THIS YEAR, unlike ReCore, Phantom Dust (which is in development limbo at the moment), Quantum Break, Sea of Thieves, Scalebound and Gears 4.

This year for Xbox (from your list):

Tomb Raider (timed exclusive)

Fable Legends (also on PC, pay-to-win)

Halo 5

Gears of War Ultimate Edition (also coming to PC)

Rare collection

Games this year for Xbox that MATTER:

Halo 5

Gears Remaster

I see what you're saying but I'm not a bleeding heart - anymore. After years of being trolled and teased for liking Xbox in almost every gaming forum and now having to put up with all the media bias towards the XBO I have no sympathy for PS gamers. The XBO has a dynamite 2015 and beyond lineup of big exclusives and unlike Sony MS doesn't need to pad it with indies or pretend that third party multiplats are exclusive and I intend on letting people know about that wherever possible. ;)
