Microsoft Has "No Information" About Bringing Anything Except Minecraft to Wii U

This comes after Microsoft talked about Rare Replay on Wii U.

102 Comments

Writing on Twitter this weekend, Microsoft confirmed it has nothing to announce regarding any of its games outside of Minecraft coming to Wii U.

This comes after a tweet from the Microsoft Studios account suggested that the company might be open to the idea of bringing Xbox One's Rare Replay to Nintendo's console.

No Caption Provided

"We appreciate all your suggestions!" Microsoft said. "However, we have no information of any games coming to the Wii U other than Minecraft at this time."

As for the initial tweet that started all of this, here's what happened. On December 7, someone asked if, in addition to Minecraft, Microsoft might bring Rare Replay to Wii U. Microsoft responded by saying anyone who's interested in that should take it up with the Microsoft-owned UK developer Rare.

No Caption Provided

This led some to believe Microsoft was open to the idea of Rare Replay one day coming to Wii U. Interestingly, Microsoft's statement ends by saying it has nothing to announce "at this time," which leaves open the possibility of some announcement being made down the road.

Minecraft for Wii U launches on December 17. Microsoft acquired the Minecraft franchise and developer Mojang in 2014 for the price of $2.5 billion.

This is a non-story - Microsoft never even came close to implying that Rare Replay might come to Wii U, and the chances of it happening are zero percent anyway.

I'd like to see an arrangement where it works both ways! Let's have some Nintendo on Xbox too!

I have no intentions to ever buy an Xbox One...so yeah, it would be cool to have it on WiiU, would definitely buy it.

Rare Replay on PC would be more interesting. Think about it.

@cornbredx: As long as I can buy them from GOG, I don't have an issue with a PC release.

I would rather see it on PC personally but since that will probably never happen, a rare replay for Nintendo will have to use different games since some games were MS exclusives and I doubt MS is feeling THAT hospitable.

@turtlesintime: Microsoft are known fans of Nintendo so they would probably allow it.

Unless it's regarding Super Mario & Company....

**** the Wii U. This thing is utter crap and wouldn't even be worth a mention if not for the first-party character titles.

@dotWithShoes: ...I don't know why you are trying to be Snarky, since that's exactly what I just said.

Super Mario World 3D
Super Smash Bros.
Star Fox Zero (I'm sure)
Zelda (Always)

So, like I said, outside of Mario & co.... why the hell would anyone own this piece of crap? The gamepad is incredibly stupid, the graphics are sub-par by comparison, their online 'network' is a joke, the entire menu is like some children's play-thing.

The Wii U sucks. Nintendo games are great, but that doesn't mean the hardware is equally cool.

@skyhighgam3r: Like I said, besides the games that are good, it sucks. Do you feel that insecure in your opinion, that when someone agrees with you, you feel the need to attack that person?

Man i hope this happens! the WiiU version of Rare Replay would be the ultimate definitive edition of that collection since Rare could add the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy from SNES as well as Donkey Kong 64. maybe they could add Goldeneye and Star Fox Adventures to the list too. i would buy a WiiU to enjoy that collection(along with the other great games on WiiU!)

Why not. Let Rare Replay make it over to Wii U/NX.

And have more Rare games make it over to Xbox in return.

The way this story has grown since the tweet is amazing.

They didn't imply anything yet people keep saying they did.

If anything it was just a reply from the tweeter to avoid questions about things they likely have no say in.

"This comes after a tweet from the Microsoft Studios account suggested that the company might be open to the idea of bringing Xbox One's Rare Replay to Nintendo's console."

Lol, where did they suggest this? He/she just diverted the question to someone else.

@lrdfancypants: the implication comes from not straight up saying 'no' or the business equivalent for that is 'we have no plans', but later adding 'we have no information of any games coming to the WiiU'

@Alurit:

I just meant the original tweet seemed more like a way to avoid the question than suggesting anything was coming.

Technically, they do, since Minecraft: Story Mode is a different game that is also headed to Wii U....

@metallinatus:

Isn't that telltale? They just paid to use the license probably. It's not an MS game.

@lrdfancypants: @metallinatus: Its true. Minecraft: Story Mode is not a MS game, Telltale paid to use the license like they so often do. Battlefront and Hyrule Warriors were developed by someone else but published by EA and Nintendo respectively. Minecraft: Story Mode was developed AND published by Telltale Games.

MS's acquisition had no effect on a deal that was long in the works prior to MS. The director of Telltale has said as much.

@turtlesintime: If you won an IP, and someone make a game using that IP, so that game is automatically yours too.... otherwise we would be seeing Donkey Kong Country all over the place at Xbox.

@metallinatus: That's might be true if the IP is stolen but if I license it out, I'm allowing it to be used within certain legal constraints. If Mickey Mouse is legally used on a box of Cheerios, Disney doesn't own that box. The NFL doesn't own Madden. And Bugatti doesn't own Forza Horizon. These are brands and products that are licensed for a fee with restrictions.

As for Donkey Kong Country, Metroid, and Pokemon, these have all been made by numerous developers but only one company has ever published those games and that's Nintendo. Nintendo maintains a very tight grip on how their ip is used and even the quality of the game.

@metallinatus:

How? This game could have been in production before MS even bought Minecraft.

It's a telltale game. They make games off of licenses all the time.

@lrdfancypants: So all the versions of Minecraft released before Microsoft bought them are not MS games? It is a Microsoft game, just like Battlefront is an EA game and Hyrule Warriors is a Nintendo game, despite none of them being the developers of any of those games.

@lrdfancypants: HBO falls in the same category as the above mentioned of "not the developers" of that respective game....

But Game of Thrones is definitely a HBO game, though.

If Rare Replay does in fact make it to Wii U, MS will get a sales boost from Nintendo's revenue so ether way, this is also good for MS making profits but not only that, since Rare Replay on Xbox One is missing games like Donkey Kong: Country/2/3, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy's Kong Racing and Goldeneye, Wii U can get those missing games into Rare Replay on Wii U making the whole game completion over Xbox One version. Rare Replay was the best purchase and the only Xbox One game I played the most, if it does come to Wii U, I'll gladly buy it again assuming it comes with the missing games I mention above.
